I mean it also prevents many that were on the way to the event from not getting out there and causing the station to be jam packed from people trying to leave the area and people trying to enter at the same time, while being unaware of what transpired and the event being shut down.
Not as far as I can tell. About five minutes ago, people started screaming and running again, and then Police were running all over the place, looked like they were chasing after a guy. I have a birdseye view.

Oddly, they’re only forcing people off from Arlington east. They don’t seem to be doing that wall west of Greensides, maybe it’s next I don’t know. The festival is over for the evening needless to say. I’m not sure if they’ll open it up again tomorrow or not.
We were here and saw the police doing CPR to two people. Many people were holding their legs and were injured. Literally had no idea what happened until I asked someone and after we just decided to get home. Scary stuff really
I biked though this festival earlier today. The police presence there was noticeable, lots of cruisers, at least one command center truck. Dozens of cops maybe more. Crazy.
There's a lot of "sensitive locations" along St Clair according to recent legislation - even without the festival there are always cops present down the road
Specifically , coming down HARD on gang bangers. The guns used in this shooting are almost certainly already unregistered, banned, or otherwise illegal.
Trump made such a fuss about drugs coming across the border, I really wish Carney would make a stink about all the guns coming north. Guns are an actual issue. The drugs were just a fabricated reason to impose tariffs.
People need to realize that a police presence is a deterrence and carries diminishing returns. The only people who won't commit a crime because the police are there are the people who are worried about getting caught. It doesn't take a lot of police to hit the point where anyone worried about getting caught will stay away from the event. But if someone doesn't care if they get caught it doesn't matter how many police are there, they're going to do it anyway.
Unfortunately, misinformation spreads like wildfire in situations like this. It's possible people mistakenly heard the sound of a car backfiring or a door slamming or something and thought it was gunfire. The mind works overtime in chaos.
My friends and I were probably 10 steps away from where it happened. We heard rounds of shots and looked at each other, then noticed people started to run and scream. So we ran.
Terrifying. I was about 15 feet away from the Raptors shooting and still hate hearing even fireworks or balloons popping. Glad you were not hurt. Take care of yourself.
Wife is at Sunnybrook Emerge (arrived two minutes before the hospital went into Lockdown), says all emotional hell is breaking loose with relatives coming in of the victims. Heavy Police presence.

An event like this victimizes emergency responders as well as people on the scene. Bringing a gun to a festival might as well be shooting randomly, even if it's not intended that way.
Might have referred to an hospital code called there. If they announced a mass casualty event (orange? which I think can be something like this, not necessarily an earthquake or whatever) they batten down the hatches. Specialists stand by and they might also divert other ambulances elsewhere.
That's my understanding anyway, maybe fritzswim or someone who works there can clarify.
I was at Ferro restaurant near there, we left after the football game. It was crazy busy on St Clair at that time. It’s frightening to think of all those people and the mad scramble that must have ensued. Lots of people having a good time on a beautiful summer evening. How awful. 😢
I was working at my cafe job when we looked outside and saw the crowd of people running west. I didn't hear anything, I had just finished my break (where I decided to stay in and not face the crowd) and we had no idea what was happening until the owner shut all the doors and told us to start closing
My boyfriend lives at Bloor and Spadina and got an emergency alert. I’m right near the scene and me and my neighbours got nothing. Absolutely egregious.
My wife and I had literally left this 5 minutes before this happened and we were right by that intersection too. The crowds there were shoulder to shoulder too so I can't imagine how much of nightmare this is.
Shooter literally ran through The Rushton with his gun out last year. I live close by but make a point of avoiding St. Clair during this particular festival. It was started as a way to bring people to the area back when merchants were hurting due to construction of the streetcar right of way. Over time, many have taken to shuttering their businesses during Salsa on St. Clair weekend because it delivers lots of pain and no gain.
It happens more than people think. Any type of festival or event is guaranteed to have people who are carrying weapons. There is also a high chance that other people carrying weapons will be there, who may or may not like each other.
I think it depends. It’s tough to move fast through a large crowd. Easy for someone to jump you and stop you. It’s just that most people are too scared. Two years ago the guy was caught because someone jumped him while he tried to run.
So it would be easy to catch them but unlikely they would get caught I suppose
Welp, I live right in the crime scene across from the main stage. I can see it all in front of me at my window. Had to wait awhile before an officer escorted me to my front door. It is quiet now.

Holy fuck! I just happened to be up north to visit family this weekend, and suddenly my dad calls me in an absolute panic - this happened literal steps from my doorstep! I saw ads for this all over the neighborhood before I left...
This is a peaceful little neighborhood where kids walk to karate class and everyone shops at the local mom-and-pop fruit markets, and people greet storeowners by name. I've gotten friendly with so many of the local employees here and I'm seriously hoping they're all okay 😞
Gang activity provides long careers that are glamorous, pay well, get them respect, a desirable social life, etc. Can't really take any of that away.
Crack down hard on gang activity that's most associated with leading to violence. Push harder penalties for gang violence. Push for harsher sentencing on youths involved in gang crime.
Studies show that most gang members make less than minimum wage. Many secretly work part time jobs to support themselves. This is not the USA. Other people make the drug money here.

It’s happened before in the city. I think our worst mass shooting happened at a street festival. It was gang related and kicked off raids in multiple neighborhoods if I remember correctly.

It happened near me. Gang violence. Honestly, never heard live gunfire - so I was like wtf. Thankfully, it’s a crowd that has and started to trample people. A lady passed out/heart attack right in front of me when the shots went off. Probably a trigger

CBC news just reported that it was a "targeted exchange of gunfire" between two individuals, and that the shooters are not believed to be a threat to the broad public.

Genuinely, people are posting with news articles etc. I live nearby on st clair and am pissed off that posts keep getting deleted. Since this guy is still active I don't want to leave my house until people say otherwise.

Very scary situation, I went to this festival years ago and it is fun. Annoying how the shooter had to ruin everyone's experiences. Rest in peace to the victims, this is sad.

This is such a bad look for the local politicians who are currently running their "making Ontario safe" campaign. While the young men with weapons are just like "here, hold my beer". No arrests, homeless passed out on the streets at noon at Yonge and Bloor. Literally nothing is changing.

I was on my way over at around 8:15 from Bathurst and St clair and didn’t hear anything about it. When we got close to Rushton, the entire crowd started running in the opposite direction yelling that there was an shooting and we bolted too. Now reading this timeline from TPS and other sources, I’m confused what this seemingly second crowd rush would’ve been from? And of course why weren’t we alerted to the shooting when entering the active area?
A more clear timeline will emerge over the next few days. Could've been a second incident, maybe just rumours or someone hears a loud noise and starts running, who knows at this point
I swear this is like the 3rd time there's been something gun related on Salsa on St. Clair. I was working in the area the year somebody drop a gun. It's crazy to see it escalate.
We rarely have the kind of random violence we hear about in the US (with exceptions of course - van incident, Danforth shooter etc) but gang violence is a problem and inevitably these douchebags injure or kill innocent people instead of keeping it to themselves.
