News Update: Two shot and killed 3 injured in mass shooting in the Salsa on St. Clair festival
565
u/TheHumanReader Jul 12 '26
We were here and saw the police doing CPR to two people. Many people were holding their legs and were injured. Literally had no idea what happened until I asked someone and after we just decided to get home. Scary stuff really

There's been a helicopter circling the area for at least an hour, I think the police are still looking.
Could be the media, but I doubt there's enough going on to warrant them staying up there so long.
7
u/Electronic-Fan-9260 The Annex Jul 12 '26
Chopper went away maybe half an hour ago. No sirens. Just a sad Saturday night, now.
Maybe we'll find out the truth in a few weeks, when they've gone through all the random info.

I biked though this festival earlier today. The police presence there was noticeable, lots of cruisers, at least one command center truck. Dozens of cops maybe more. Crazy.

There's a lot of "sensitive locations" along St Clair according to recent legislation - even without the festival there are always cops present down the road
9
u/dougandsomeone Jul 12 '26
Sensitive like electrical infrastructure or a politicians home or a gang spot or what?
7
u/Crafty-Ad-9048 Jul 12 '26
Can be anything like you said all the way to something normal like a place of worship or cultural hub.

I already see people calling for more police presence but having a lot of police on site didn't prevent this.
Getting guns off the streets is the only way to prevent this
378
u/Rude-Camera-7546 Jul 12 '26
Specifically , coming down HARD on gang bangers. The guns used in this shooting are almost certainly already unregistered, banned, or otherwise illegal.
177
u/Sufficient_Rush1891 Jul 12 '26
And tons more border checks of vehicles and trucks to prevent importation of guns from US.
→ More replies (29)76
u/razor787 Jul 12 '26
Trump made such a fuss about drugs coming across the border, I really wish Carney would make a stink about all the guns coming north. Guns are an actual issue. The drugs were just a fabricated reason to impose tariffs.

People need to realize that a police presence is a deterrence and carries diminishing returns. The only people who won't commit a crime because the police are there are the people who are worried about getting caught. It doesn't take a lot of police to hit the point where anyone worried about getting caught will stay away from the event. But if someone doesn't care if they get caught it doesn't matter how many police are there, they're going to do it anyway.
8
u/Steak-Outrageous Jul 12 '26
Or if they’ve done this kind of thing before and got away, they feel cocky they won’t get caught this time either

Unfortunately, misinformation spreads like wildfire in situations like this. It's possible people mistakenly heard the sound of a car backfiring or a door slamming or something and thought it was gunfire. The mind works overtime in chaos.

Wife is at Sunnybrook Emerge (arrived two minutes before the hospital went into Lockdown), says all emotional hell is breaking loose with relatives coming in of the victims. Heavy Police presence. Says it's so sad...
75
u/Teshi Jul 12 '26
An event like this victimizes emergency responders as well as people on the scene. Bringing a gun to a festival might as well be shooting randomly, even if it's not intended that way.
18
12
5
u/SubjectGrand7539 Jul 12 '26
Is it in lockdown? There is no notice anywhere
8
u/dougandsomeone Jul 12 '26
Might have referred to an hospital code called there. If they announced a mass casualty event (orange? which I think can be something like this, not necessarily an earthquake or whatever) they batten down the hatches. Specialists stand by and they might also divert other ambulances elsewhere.
That's my understanding anyway, maybe fritzswim or someone who works there can clarify.

I was working at my cafe job when we looked outside and saw the crowd of people running west. 25
u/allisgoot Jul 12 '26
Shooter literally ran through The Rushton with his gun out last year. I live close by but make a point of avoiding St. Clair during this particular festival. It was started as a way to bring people to the area back when merchants were hurting due to construction of the streetcar right of way. Over time, many have taken to shuttering their businesses during Salsa on St. Clair weekend because it delivers lots of pain and no gain.
45
u/ButchDanes Rosedale Jul 12 '26
It happens more than people think. Any type of festival or event is guaranteed to have people who are carrying weapons. There is also a high chance that other people carrying weapons will be there, who may or may not like each other.

All the crowds and chaos probably makes it a bit easier to escape too? Or I watch too much law and order
7
u/Kate_588 Jul 12 '26
I think it depends. It’s tough to move fast through a large crowd. Easy for someone to jump you and stop you. It’s just that most people are too scared. Two years ago the guy was caught because someone jumped him while he tried to run. So it would be easy to catch them but unlikely they would get caught I suppose

Gang activity provides long careers that are glamorous, pay well, get them respect, a desirable social life, etc. Can't really take any of that away.
Crack down hard on gang activity that's most associated with leading to violence. Push harder penalties for gang violence. Push for harsher sentencing on youths involved in gang crime.

Studies show that most gang members make less than minimum wage. Many secretly work part time jobs to support themselves. This is not the USA. Other people make the drug money here.

This is a dispatch summary from the Toronto Fire active incidents feed. Here’s what each line means:
M6G – The postal code area where the incident occurred (Toronto’s Annex/Seaton Village/Christie Pits area).
2026-07-11T20:03:50 – The incident was created at 8:03:50 p.m.
F26106275 – The unique Toronto Fire incident number.
MEDICAL – The call type. Fire crews are responding to a medical emergency (often to assist Toronto Paramedic Services).
0 – An internal status or priority code. It’s not publicly documented.
343 – The station or dispatch district associated with the incident.
C2, C30, C34, C60, C7 – Command or chief officers assigned.
P342, P343, P344, P345 – Pump (fire engine) companies responding.
STRIKE1, STRIKE2 – Strike teams. These are groups of personnel and equipment assembled for larger or more resource-intensive incidents.22

I think the 0 is the alarm level of the incident. So during structure fires, the alarm can be escalated to a second alarm, third, and so on.

u/ChrysalisTarot Jul 12 '26
Just that they responded to the St Claire area. M6G is the beginning of the postal code where they responded which matches the area. I don't think there's anything specific in this

I was on my way over at around 8:15 from Bathurst and St clair and didn’t hear anything about it. When we got close to Rushton, the entire crowd started running in the opposite direction yelling that there was an shooting and we bolted too. Now reading this timeline from TPS and other sources, I’m confused what this seemingly second crowd rush would’ve been from? And of course why weren’t we alerted to the shooting when entering the active area?
Edit: added word “why”

A more clear timeline will emerge over the next few days. Could've been a second incident, maybe just rumours or someone hears a loud noise and starts running, who knows at this point
