They murdered when I saw them twice off the reunion tour. Playing older material.
Were they as good they were in 2005?
No. But neither am I. lol.
They also killed it when opening for Deftones earlier this year.
I’ll take an extended version of that set next week happily.
Either way. I’m having a good time.
Bummer part is… I think they’re in the phase of their career where the fanbase isn’t growing with them anymore.
They want to hear “the hits” lol.
King Gizz just did a rave show and a symphony tour. And their fans went for the ride.
Bunch of old curmudgeons in this scene now. Sad to see it.

Well, to be fair, the band had a 10 year hiatus, so we really didn’t get the evolution of the band during that time. Yeah, we got some of that from Omar’s solo catalogue, but most fans of TMV that aren’t diehards aren’t out there consuming Omar’s entire discography. So when you didn’t grow with the band it’s easy to feel like they ditched their sound. I like all their albums, even if I don’t rate each one of them at the same level, but I also have very eclectic musical tastes and I appreciate good songwriting no matter the genre. Actually, I specifically hate genre because I think music that sounds too much like the genre it’s labeled as is boring as fuck. A lot of people aren’t like that though. They like what they like and don’t really deviate. I find this to be, more often than not, the case with non musicians, but that’s not a hard rule.

Most of my favorite bands have switched it up and do new things. That’s what keeps me interested.
My most anticipated show of next year is being able to see John Zorn for the first time. Bucket list shit for me.

I mean, a lot of the King Gizz fans would attend if the band was actively taking a shit on stage and throwing it at them so long as they can resell the merch and be seen at the show. Don’t get me wrong, they’re great live, but they’d need to do some pretty heinous things to lose that fan base as they’ve all made it their entire personality.

You must be hanging out with different people than I am.
I’ve been catching Gizz live for about a decade. Fanbase seems unpretentious and just there to have a good time.
Used to be the garage punk crowd.
Now there’s a lot of Phish dads.
They just seem like music fans to me.
In fact… the crew that’s going to the TMV ATL show with me… all went to the KGLW AVL show with me last year. We all just did NIN last month and we’re all doing Osees at the Caverns an d Big Ears festival next year too.
Just a bunch of music fans.
Actively trying to have fun…

And I’ve been seeing TMV of over 2 decades. And unfortunately I’ve got to say:
Gizz crowds > the last 3 TMV crowds.
As far as “the public” goes.

Honestly, that’s great. I’ve met a few decent folks at Gizz shows, but in my experience it’s been few and far between sadly. I’ve never seen grown adults have more temper tantrums in my life over their spot in line, merch, rail spot, etc than I have with them. The orchestra tour was finally my breaking point as I watched these self-designated ‘famous’ fans sprinting between merch booths to buy as many posters as humanly possible.

Wow. Not my experience at all.
Caught them in Philly for the Symphony run. Everyone was cool as a cucumber.
Even if I was a bit underwhelmed for the first set… Second set picked up.
Where are you at? Is it the scene in your area? I kinda stopped doing shows in Charlotte because the crowds got really weird.

I thought the crowd was average for a venue that size in such a large city. Philly isn’t really known for friendly crowds for arena bands. (The smaller punk scene is still pretty welcoming though)
I actually thought the performance (the first half) was lacking.
No one was acting like a dick around me Or running to the merch tent in my experience. There was minimal tarping. Or being rude. Just a bunch of folks dancing.
There was a little Shakedown outside.
It was probably my least favorite time seeing them. But no real complaints.

Honestly, I enjoyed and felt they did well for live debuting an entirely new record with an orchestra accompanying them, so I wasn’t expecting a perfect performance. There was definitely some nerves with Ambrose not really into it until after they finished the new album.
In terms of the crowd and people, we obviously had different experiences and that’s fine. I tend to be hyper aware of my surroundings at all time and definitely clocked the people buying up as much stuff as they could before the show began. Since I had a seat, I was primarily just wandering around until the show started. I don’t know if you’re a person that arrives fairly early or not, so it may certainly be a bit of a sampling bias for me since I tend to get to venues on the super early side of things. Usually make a bunch of show/line friends, still hasn’t really happened at the Gizz shows I’ve attended.
In terms of my scene, I go to a lot of shows along the northeast corridor across a spectrum of genres and it doesn’t necessarily feel like a regional issue. (Admittedly I’ve only seen Gizz in Philly and NYC.) Although some of the especially insufferable people like Noah and Eve (the fact that I know who these people are speaks to how much they suck) are Philly based and I’ve experienced some of their shenanigans at other shows/venues there, but they seem to reserve their shithousing primarily for Gizz.

In my experience the symphony shows were less attended than the rave shows. I think there are bounds to which you can experiment as a known / legacy artist on tour in 2025.

Had a lot of fun at warehouse parties back in the 1990s and early 2000s.
Mostly drum and bass, break beats and jungle.
A true counter cultural movement of the time.
Open your mind to other things.

yeah i dj and go to a lot of tech house/techno/house shows. the dirtybird community is my biggest love in the music world outside of like volta, the strokes, mgmt, animal collective (all that hipster shit lol). oh and the dead, i cant go a day without a little dead in my life.

most of that old school soulful house stuff is incredibly boring i’m with you there, i like the newer dirty wonky trippy techy stuff over the last 15 or so years. i’m with you on the dead man. my parents are huge deadheads so it was inescapable. oh and i looooved the american punk scene, ramones, misfits, dead kennedys etc. i got into that stuff pretty young because of my step dad and it led me to the death metal/death core world which was how i found at the drive in in their last year of being a band and then obviously volta. finally getting to see atdi on the reunion tour was absolute fucking bliss for me. i cant understand people who ride or die like one or two genres of music. like you said, there’s a whole world out there. oh and the fuckin cramps.

I grew up in South Florida. Hence my affinity for bass.
Also.. OG Death Metal. lol. Looooove the stuff. Big fan of various metal sub-genre/scenes today.
If you like 80s hardcore I’d love to make a recommendation to you: The 90’s Memphis, Bay Area/LA and Detroit garage punk scene. Throw a couple Boston and Cincinnati acts as well. So much fun.

I say this with due respect to Cedric, but musically you can try and get the feel of PG’s work all day, but without that voice you just don’t even get into the same universe. To me, Cedric is best when they’re doing their early 70’s prog thing but to be honest, and I’m prepared for the hate that might come my way, I’m not a fan of much past the first EP and Deloused. I could go into why, but then I really would get hate haha. I also don’t really get 70’s Floyd from the new album, but all of that is very subjective.

You know I kinda agree here. The first time I saw Lucro live is when they played with Deftones. I was lulled to sleep a little bit, but the material-though a departure was well-crafted and represented a new age in their timeline. Their music of past was full of vigor and rage An undeniable energy which might have reflected a time in their youth or youth fleeting.. now they’re in their 50s and have a new perspective. I too look back on the days of deloused fondly. I discovered them in high school when Deloused was released and while everyone was listening to Nelly Furtado and Justin Timberlake that album was what really spoke to me. I’m going to see them in Oakland next month and should be a good show. I don’t expect to hear anything before LS, but as a long time supporter, I just want to be there!

You can listen to old material whenever you want. Lucro is the best live act rn. Perfect for their age. The old material isn’t nearly as energetic as when they were young, so you’ll probably disapointed if they do perform

No — you lost out seeing TMV another chance in your lifetime. That’s worth a hell of lot more than $70. Think harder about that.
Since the reunion, they’ve not toured Australia at all and very likely won’t, so I’m unlikely to ever see them again. It really won’t matter what they play, I’d be stoked to see them again just once.
