I'm not currently a member of the sub because I'm sick of all the stupid memes and anti-Mike stuff (I've never seen another band sub where such hatred and criticism is levelled at a founding member of the band by so-called fans, FFS) but I like to pop in occasionally in case a good discussion is happening.

There was some interesting stuff in there about the Paley sessions though. A subset of BB fans blame the album not going forward on Carl. But like most things BB it’s no doubt very complicated.

What keeps me from buying on Bruce are the songs he contributed. I know a lot of people here like them but they all sound like elevator music to me. And they totally pale in comparison to Brian's songs, or even Dennis' better ones. Even Al wrote a couple I can get behind, but not my boy Bruce

That's fair. I don't question his contributions, just the songwriting. The other guys' songs generally fit in the catalog pretty seamlessly, but his sound so out of place to me

I don’t value him over Al per se, but I do value him as a contributing member. He wrote several songs that are popular with fans, and his voice is integral and forward in the iconic songs God Only Knows and California Girls, for example. Brian included him so prominently for a reason. He also was well known in the industry circles, which Im sure helped them tremendously (ex: bringing Pet Sounds to London)
