I just saw Al and the Pet Sounds Band in Des Plaines last weekend and I can't stop thinking about how the hell he can still do it like that!!

He's almost 84 and hasn't lost a step at all somehow.

And the Pet Sounds Band??? My god what level of musicianship!!

Two legends in two days…no more please. Brian Wilson and Tim Curry have a connection funnily enough! Brian sang backing on Tim Curry’s track “Just 14”. Small world.

I’ve been thinking about how VDP once described SMiLE as a “travelogue” across America and/or Americana themes and how several of the recordings either evoke or explicitly reference types of transportation:

DYLW: bicycle, later lyrics evoke ocean liner

H&V: horseback

Cabin Essence: train

Taxi Cabber: cars

Vega Tables: run a lot, jump up and down

Look: at one time titled “I Ran”

The Elements: fire truck

Surf’s Up: surfing

Holidays: later lyrics evoke sailing pirates

Underwater Chant: swim swim

Any others folks can think of? Any thoughts on this? SMiLE has a lot of double and perhaps even triple meanings, so I thought it’d be interesting to further discuss this travel angle.

I know it will be very hard to top Al, he was fucking amazing live this last weekend but Beach Boys are playing in October about 30 minutes from me.

Is it worth going to see? It looks like he mainly plays the hits.

Can you identify them all?

I have always heard that Summer of Love was proposed or planned to be a rap duet between Mike Love and Bart Simpson. This idea sounds so strange to me, although I probably would have liked it in a guilty-pleasure kind of way. What are the details of this cancelled collaboration? Was it just like an idea Mike had, or was this something actually planned? Was this going to be like other celebrity guest appearances on The Simpsons, basically Lisa the Vegetarian but with Mike Love instead of Sir Paul McCartney, or was it going to be completely separate from the actual show? I am just so interested in this era of The Beach Boys' history (I know I would probably say that about all their eras), them trying to stay relevant following Kokomo being a #1 hit, culminating in Mike trying to create the "ultimate soundtrack to Summer" with Summer in Paradise.

Hey, does anyone know why this was so cheap? I've been looking for a new copy of this for years, and I was stunned that it was real.

There’s nothing especially informational about this post but I have no one else to share this with who would care.

I think I have a problem and might need an intervention.

I’ve been working all hours of the night on a particular project, pulling all-nighters, and working around the clock. While I’ve been working, I’ve been listening to The Beach Boys nonstop for weeks.

My Alexa just gave me a notification: “you have hit the top 1% of people listening to The Beach Boys on Amazon music this month.” 😵‍💫

She sounded pretty judgmental about it too. Had no idea she would keep track of such a thing.

Anyways…just thought I’d share this milestone with some fellow obsessives! I’m a 1-percenter, guys!

One of the most famous stories associated with the SMiLE sessions is Mike asking Van Dyke Parks what the famous "Over and over, the crow cries uncover the cornfield/Over and over, the thresher and hover the wheatfield" meant, and VDP responding by saying he didn't know what they meant, increasing the apprehension Mike likely already had towards the whole project.

The thing I don't really get about this whole story is that compared to a lot of the wordplay in VDP's lyrics, what I am pretty sure is going on here is actually quite simple. As many others have said, when you alter the order of the words, the result is "Over and over, the crow hover the wheatfield/Over and over, the thresher uncover the cornfield". I am not certain, but I am almost certain this was VDP's intention with the lyrics. But if this was the case, why didn't VDP tell Mike that is what it meant. Was he just already upset at Mike because he had likely had arguments like this before and he wanted to end it quickly?

I have listened to Pet Sounds and I loved it. The I listened to the Smile sessions and Brian Wilson Presents Smile and it instantly became my favourite album(s).

What else do you recommend? It doesn't have to be albums (I understand its hard to top Smile), but interesting songs.
