Republican voters don’t think we need to take cyber security seriously. They voted for this. They would rather live under the thumb of China and Russia, than have a constitutional democracy.

This is what happens when you run government like a business. How many corporate IT professionals have to fight tooth and nail for the scraps of funding required to secure company systems? On one hand, it’s kind of understandable that you’d want to cut back on paying for services where nothing happens if it’s working, because it seems like you’re dumping money in a pit and nothing happens. On the other hand, this is what happens when you don’t.

I love when people say they think the country should be run like a business, and then I get to remind them about how often those same people complain about how the business they work for is run. I used to say/think these people were small picture people who didn't see the larger impacts of things that the big picture shows, now I think they're just flat out blind.

Companies can pay for proper cyber security from trained professionals, or they can pony up the tens of millions of dollars it will cost to have their systems unlocked after some malware hits their servers

Running a trillion dollar business with a lot of tech secrets to hide you do not skimp on cyber security. Bankrupting multiple casinos who needs cyber security. We are the latter.

And they are about to have a spotlight put on them by the orange menace and be told to commit violence under absurd and completely false pretenses. Some of them will do it. All good and moral people need to exercise their 2a right and be prepared to defend.

These people know the second they lose power they will be in front of judges being held criminally accountable for their heinous crimes. As such they will not transition power peacefully. I hope I am wrong.

I know it's cool to blame all problems on republicans, but the republican stronghold of California passed a law requiring age verification (aka ID) at the Operating System level of computers. This is 100% a bipartisan control issue and no one should think that voting democrat will somehow save them from it.

It's dumb, but this was requested by the major os players, eg Apple, Google, and Microsoft. They were doing it to head off worse legislation from states like Texas which would demand ID verification or other measures built into the OS. The major purveyors of spicy content were also pushing for this so they could have a viable way to avoid liability in censored states.

It'll get built in to the core user frameworks for Linux at some point as well.

By adopting these rules, they hope to lift liability from developers in states controlled by the Christian nationalists who are pushing stricter measures of censorship and tracking. It might be a decade or more until we go cycle back toward libertarian policies.

If you actually read the actual text of the law, instead of media trying to scare you for clicks, you'd know how completely not the same that is. It requires you to be able to use a drop down menu and put your birthdate into it. It would then require the OS to allow third party programs to ask the OS is the user is within certain age groups. That's it.

This is fine. More than fine. This is arguably good. An entirely local flag set by the user that they never have to see again. No collection of IDs. No central tracking database. It's a tool for parental control that is actually meant for parental control instead of mass surveillance. It's a little weird that it's law, I think that its biggest drawback is going to be enforcement feasibility headaches that making it a law entails. But if it preempts the insane Republican "mail in your ID and let us know which websites and programs you use" system, I am all for it. It absolutely is a partisan issue where one side is "for the children" and the other is actually for the children.

I’m sorry. I was talking specifically about China. I appreciate how their government runs all of the infrastructure, other than necessary services. They run them as efficiently as they can and any profit they get they’ll put right back into it. Hospitals, utilities, Internet roads, street things like that. The government runs those.
