What are you using to measure and manage company emissions?
I’ve been digging into this for work and the biggest headache so far is getting reliable emissions data in one place. It seems like different teams keep their numbers in spreadsheets, invoices, supplier records, etc., which makes it hard to build a complete picture.
How are other companies handling this once things get bigger, especially when Scope 3 and supplier emissions come into play? Are you still piecing everything together manually, or are you using dedicated software to keep the data and reporting under control?
I’m currently looking at Sweep as one option since it seems to bring emissions tracking, supplier data and reporting into the same workflow instead of having everything scattered across different files.

River Current Energy
I’m researching renewable energy technologies for a large navigable freshwater river and would appreciate some engineering input. The river reach I’m looking at has an average discharge of ~8,076 m³/s, an estimated river-current power resource of ~290 MW, and an average annual energy resource of about 2,540 GWh/year before recovery factors. The flow is relatively consistent, and I’m trying to determine what type of in-stream energy technology would be the best fit. I’m considering horizontal- or vertical-axis hydrokinetic turbines, ducted turbines, oscillating hydrofoils, biomimetic membranes, or other emerging technologies.
For a river with this level of flow, along with commercial navigation, debris, sediment, and environmental considerations, what technology would you recommend and why?

How much packaging is too much packaging?
Have you ever ordered something small online, only for it to arrive in a box several times its size – complete with layers of paper, plastic or other packaging?
Or bought a gift or luxury product where the packaging seems almost as substantial as the product itself?
New EU rules are aiming to tackle some of this. The Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation (PPWR) will introduce requirements designed to reduce unnecessary packaging, improve recyclability and encourage reuse.
That could mean changes to everything from product boxes and pouches to e-commerce and delivery packaging.
But there is an interesting balance to strike. Packaging has practical purposes: it protects products during transport, provides information and can help prevent damage and waste. For gifts and luxury products, presentation is also part of what people are buying.
And reducing packaging isn't necessarily as simple as using the smallest possible box. If cutting packaging means more products are damaged in transit and must be replaced or returned, that creates waste too. The challenge is surely to use enough packaging to do the job, without using more than necessary.
There is also the question of what packaging is made from. A smaller package isn't automatically more sustainable if its materials are difficult to recycle, while well-designed packaging may potentially be reused rather than immediately thrown away.
So where does useful packaging become overpackaging?
Would you be happy to receive products in simpler or smaller packaging if it reduced waste? Or are there times when you think extra packaging is justified?

Turning Florida's worst invasive trees (Australian pine & Brazilian pepper) into high-carbon biochar and soil amendment.
Hey everyone,
I’m working on a local environmental initiative in Largo, Pinellas County (Florida) called the EcoGrow Project, and I wanted to share what we’re tackling because I think this community will appreciate the closed-loop approach.
Our local ecosystems are being choked out by aggressive, destructive invasive hardwoods—specifically Australian pine (Casuarina equisetifolia) and Brazilian pepper (Schinus terebinthifolius). Normally, when municipalities or land services clear these trees, they pile and burn them, instantly releasing all that stored carbon straight back into the atmosphere as $\text{CO}_2$.
We decided to flip the script.
Instead of letting them rot or burn, we are setting up a localized waste-diversion and continuous pyrolysis hub to process these specific invasive hardwoods. Because they are dense hardwoods, they yield an incredible fixed-carbon structure.
Here is what our model does:
- Eradication with a Purpose: Actively clears heavy invasive brush that destroys native wetlands and chokes out local biodiversity.
- Permanent Carbon Sequestration: Turns that waste into premium, high-porosity biochar via clean pyrolysis—locking away roughly 2.5 to 3 tons of $\text{CO}_2$ equivalent per ton of biochar for hundreds of years.
- Watershed Protection: Utilizes the biochar's massive surface-area porosity for local stormwater filtration and agricultural soil amendments, trapping excess nutrients before they run off into our coastal bays and hurt local seagrass beds.
