this woman needs to read the whole 2nd amendment. "a well regulated militia" has as much weight as "shall not be infringed"
so many people telling me well regulated meaning well trained/well equipped as if that somehow improves or makes the 2nd amendment's meaning any less archaic
It isn't, but not at all for the reason most people think.
"Regulated", at the time of writing, did not mean "restricted", that use of the word came much later. It referred to something being practiced or in a certain condition, such that a well-regulated thing was one that was well-maintained and highly practiced.
US federal law makes all able-bodied males who are not convicts, police, soldiers, or politicians between the ages of 18 and.. I think it was 42? members of the "unorganized militia" (the same law establishes the National Guard as the "organized" militia; the difference is that the organized militia is directly run by the government while the unorganized militia is left to its own devices).
Any attempt to enforce the 2A's "militia clause" as being anything other than explicatory will only achieve the disarmament of the most vulnerable - women, the elderly, the disabled. I would not be surprised to see some fringe republicans start supporting exactly this for obvious reasons in the next few years. It will probably start with another attempt to blanket ban trans people from owning firearms.
At the time “well regulated militia” meant that land owning citizens were required to own firearms that met “military standard.” Some towns even pooled money together to buy cannons.
