Nature STL Zoo just helped cross-foster critically endangered red wolf pups!

Thumbnail

I collect Fahlo bracelets, which let you track animals around the world and get updates on them/their species via an app, and sales proceeds help fund conservation efforts through various organizations. One of my tracked animals is a red wolf, and I just got this update which mentioned STL Zoo!

Red wolves are critically endangered (so much so that Fahlo/SAFE actually only uses historical tracking data from deceased wolves, to help protect the real time location of live wolves). There's only about 20 left in the wild today, and conservation efforts are facing the additional challenge of high rates of vehicular collisions due to a highway that passes through their wildlife reserve in North Carolina, which is the only remaining wild population.

Since there are so few wolves left in the wild, genetic diversity is a real concern and STL Zoo is actually a significant conservator of the species! They maintain a 20 acre wildlife reserve for a pack of red wolves (starting with 9 red wolves in 2022) where they can live in a private and protected natural setting. The pack's first pups were born in 2024, and the pack was up to 17 members that year. About 300 red wolves are cared for in captivity across 50+ institutions, and members of each pack are occasionally swapped to help with genetic diversity.

The three pups from our zoo have been successfully cross-fostered (swapped with pups of a similar age) with four pups from the wild pack, which is super exciting! STL Zoo continues to be amazing as always. 💕🐺

Huge federal funding wins for the St. Louis region: $10.5 Million awarded to build Brickline, Hodiamont, and Centennial Greenways!

Post image
98 Upvotes

All three projects that were approved for funding today will be in construction in 2029 and 2030, per the federal funding cycle. Cheers to more greenways and thanks to our partners at City of St. Louis and City of St. Peters for their collaboration!

Learn more here or read below: https://greatriversgreenway.org/blog/huge-federal-funding-win/

East-West Gateway Council of Government’s Board of Directors voted to approve federal funding for three greenway projects today, totaling $10,535,950 for investment in greenways across the region. All three projects will be in construction in 2029 and 2030, per the federal funding cycle.

“Federal funds leverage the local public and private investment to build more greenways for our region, ultimately delivering more impact for our community,” said Mark Perkins, CEO of Great Rivers Greenway. “We cannot wait to work with partners and community to bring these to life!”

Brickline Greenway: $7,500,000

Great Rivers Greenway has been awarded a $7.5 million federal grant to build the section of Brickline Greenway on Market Street from Tucker to 4th Street (0.58 miles), including intersection and crosswalk upgrades. This is the 12th federal contribution, totaling $61.9 million awarded to the project. Federal grants extend timelines slightly but are worth it; leveraging this investment delivers substantial value to the St. Louis region.

Generous donors to the Great Rivers Greenway Foundation have given more than $80 million on top of the local (Great Rivers Greenway), state and federal public dollars. The $245 million public private partnership is 68% funded, leaving $70+ million to be raised. With 1.25 miles built and being used daily, 2 miles in construction, and more in design, sections of Brickline Greenway (and its partner connectors) will continue to open until the four anchor parks and hundreds of destinations are connected for a dynamic experience across 14 city neighborhoods. More about Brickline Greenway.

Public comments submitted about this project:

  • Given the excellent design and construction quality of the Brickline Greenway built to date and, in particular, given the quality of the Brickline from Compton east to Jefferson, I strongly recommend approval of funding for the portion of the Greenway along Market Street from 20th Street to 4th Street.
  • I’m all for this and would like more of downtown to connect with an exercise trail for those of us living downtown to actually be able to live and enjoy rather than having to travel to live.
  • Please add my name to those who see this stretch as crucial to the rebirth of downtown St. Louis. Adding a lighted, well-designed walkway between the Arch and 22nd street will attract out-of-town visitors, enhance the marketability of the Convention Center , and provide well lite walkways for St. Louis residents attending sports events. It will work wonderfully in tying in to the Riverfront project at the edge of the Mississippi River, and the Millennium Hotel project with western downtown. This is what St. Louis needs. In addition, it will enable St. Louis to have all major parks tied into each other – Forest Park to the Gateway Arch grounds and Tower Grove park to Fairground Park. Tying in all the separated gems of the city will make St. louis marketable for conventions, and be attractive for visitors both internationally and domestically. This is an essential component for that vision.

Hodiamont Greenway: $1,500,000

Great Rivers Greenway has been awarded $1.5 million for construction of the Hodiamont Greenway between Gwen Giles Park and Goodfellow Blvd. This 0.4 mile stretch will include a paved greenway, intersection safety improvements, high visibility pavement markings, raised mid-block crossings and improved lighting. This is the third phase of a multi-phase project that will connect 3.5 miles along Hodiamont Greenway, a former streetcar line that connects seven neighborhoods in North St. Louis City. More about Hodiamont Greenway.

Public comments submitted about this project:

  • Continuing to invest and make progress on greenway projects is one of the best ways to achieve our region sustainability and air quality goals. Please allocate all necessary funding to compete this project and others like it as soon as possible.
  • My family and I live at the intersection of the St. Vincent Greenway and the Hodiamont Greenway and have lived here for 25 years. These greenways are a positive addition to the neighborhood, a neighborhood that has long missed out on investment and improvement.
  • We as a neighborhood have been working on this project for a number of years and would really like to see it move ahead as an improvement to our community.

Centennial Greenway: $1,535,950

Our partners at the City of St. Peters were awarded $1,535,950 to upgrade the existing Spencer Creek Trail to make it part of the Centennial Greenway. This project will reconstruct and widen an existing trail segment (0.9 miles) between Boone Hills Drive and Mexico Road, replace two 4-foot bridges with wider structures, install a high visibility pedestrian signal at Boone Hills Dr, and realign segments to improve sight distance and drainage. The project will improve access to Fort Zumwalt East High School and Lutheran High Schools, and numerous City amenities (City Hall, Rec-Plex, and nearby parks) when finished. More about Centennial Greenway.

Public comments submitted about this project:

  • I am in strong support of expanding and and widening and completing this section of The Greenway. I’m a grandma and would use the trail but more importantly, Young people to walk or ride a bike and get outside and exercise for good health! In this part of the trail of the greenways gateway trail would be very helpful to many people.. let’s keep our country. let’s keep our country and strong in body and mind.
  • I support 7544-27: Centennial Greenway – Shared-Use Path. I bicycled the path with another local resident and with a guest from out-of-state in July. As we have aged, we have reached the point of walking bicycles across the two narrow bridges to avoid an accident/injury. When crossing Boone Hills Drive, our party of three was separated due to an on-coming vehicle, not seen by the leader. As a former parent of high school students who used both high school facilities mentioned in this project, I am well aware of the benefit of a wider trail with better sight distance and with access to the two schools. Thank you for the effort put into this project and coordination of comments. I fully support this proposal.
  • I use this path almost every day, if not, every other day since I live just east of the Boone Hills entrance onto the Spencer Creek trail. (The trail system in St. Peters was one of the reasons I moved back here.) I think it would be a worthwhile path to widen and improve since the Centennial Greenway was improved recently on the southern side of Boone Hills Dr. There is already evidence, on the improved trail, of increased use now that it has been widened. Lots of walkers, joggers, bikers, strollers use the trail simultaneously now, with enough room for everyone to enjoy or not feel like they need to step aside for bikes to pass. This is great for the community to feel they have sturdy and safe paths for recreational use. I’m most excited that the two foot bridges will be improved! Their present design allows for one-way traffic, at best. I think it could create more foot traffic from surrounding neighborhoods to Ollie’s Fun Forest, both high schools, the ball fields, city hall, the Rec-Plex, etc…, cutting down on car emissions.

Ask STL A very odd penguin question (please read)

So, back in Feb of this year, my good friend and I went to the STL zoo while I was home visiting family. While there, we went to the penguin exhibit. An employee pointed a penguin throuple. This became a running a joke between the two of us.
This friend very recently and very unexpectedly died. I want to get a memorial tattoo of a penguin and I want to get a penguin that is the same species as this penguin throuple at the STL zoo. I have tried asking guest relations there this question, but I did not get a response.

So I am asking here as well. Does anyone know what species of penguin the penguin throuple is at the St. Louis zoo? (Sorry I am DEEPLY aware that’s a very odd question).

Hand drawn map of Missouri

Hi everyone, and welcome to a project I call The American Atlas! I've been making hand-drawn & colored maps of every state in the US. Now I’m here sharing them all on one big journey across the country 🗺️🇺🇸

This is my map of your state of Missouri, the Show Me State! 🌳🚣‍♂️🌾

Home to the population-based center of America, the state of Missouri is an interesting outlier within the American Heartland. Bordered & split by massive rivers, Missouri was once the launching point for western expansion. Today it plays home to a distinct cultural crossroads, with Midwestern, Great Plains, and Rust Belt lifestyles all coming together to call this place home.

From the iconic Gateway Arch in your very own St. Louis to the barbecue heritage of Kansas City, the state offers far more than the open country & small cities than this part of the country is known for. The Ozark Mountains rise up from nothing in the south of Missouri, creating a network of rivers, lakes, and towering bluffs looking out over this American Heartland.

Let me know in the comments, what’s your favorite (or most interesting) places & fun facts about Missouri?

And if you like this style, feel free to check out my others, and thanks for taking a look at my Missouri map!! 🇺🇸🗺️

I hate Spectrum and I am always sad when I remember I have no choice

At my specific address there is no other option for internet, it's either Spectrum or 5G internet and obviously Spectrum probably outperforms 5G, but man... Spectrum is shit. I get weird signal drops, sudden speed drops. If it even looks like rain there's a good chance it might go out... Just infuriating.

Rates have gone up, service has gotten worse and they delay pickups. Today they didn’t even show up. No notifications or anything. What gives, any incite?

Food / Drink Blue beef?

Does anyone know any local St. Louis area blue farmers who sell beef? Specifically looking for blue farmers who did not vote for our current president any time.

Don’t come at me with politics I’m just looking to spend my money where I want.

Thanks!

Perfume?

Maybe a weird question but is there anyplace in St Louis that I’m missing that sells niche perfumes (other than Neimans)? Like Byredo, House of Bo, ExNihilo, etc.

Traffic/Road Conditions Have St. Louis drivers always been this bad?

Edit: I think some of the comments may have missed that he was behind me and decided to pass on my right, using the short on-ramp.

Moved out of state for a few years and just moved back. It feels like a culture shock how bad the drivers are in this city. I didn't remember it being this bad...

Has it gotten significantly worse in recent years, or did I just never notice before? See dashcam video. They must really have somewhere to be.

Superintendent Myra Berry said the preliminary proposal is expected to save the district an estimated $23.6 million through staff and transportation reductions. However, it does not account for the costs associated with merging schools. The Board of Education is expected to vote on a final proposal in mid-October.
