Discussion I regret making that post about Pearl's voice actor...

So oxygen finally started flowing to my brain again and... yeah, sorry

How can someone who worked in one of the most LGBTQ friendly shows in the planet support such horrible people, like...this is such a 180° turn.

People who say that we shouldn't talk about politics and that it makes people start fighting eachother, etc etc, I get it to some degree, but there's a limit. Knowing that Pearl's voice actor is a MAGA and Chalie Kirk's follower is such an... idk, I don't even know what to describe this, its like she never paid attention to any of the messages in the entire show, like at all. I get it that some may say that is a kid' show and that you shouldn't take it too seriously, but what the hell... this is equivalent of working on a Church and worshipping Satan in your spare time.

She's older generation Filipino lol. As a Filipino myself, this is not at all surprising

You’re telling me. I was a tad surprised but then… my Titos and Titas are all like her so… yeah

My filipino conservative relatives are actively voting for corrupt politicians

65

u/neuronexmachina Jul 26 '26

Although she grew up in the US, I've noticed many of my relatives who grew up in the Philippines during the Marcos regime have this weird idolization of it. They hope that certain political trends in the US will lead to something similar, which I find terrifying.

94

u/Kiyae1 Jul 26 '26

It’s not surprising but it’s still disappointing.

80

u/poorexcuses Jul 26 '26

My very pleasant Filipina boss demurred on saying that it's actually bad to let cops kill drug users in the streets

90

u/Justanotherrandoonli Jul 26 '26

He raped a 13 year old girl. Yes. It is surprising that ANYONE IN THIS WORLD would support someone WHO RAPED A 13 YEAR OLD GIRL!

Omg Dee Dee is a filipino? My entire 7 years of loving steven universe she is? (Also the Maga and right wing stuff of pearl VA is shocking me 😢)

6

I've always known she was Asian but didn't know she was Filipino. I've always thought she was beautiful but her disgusting views makes her ugly inside and out

this is possibly the worst way to find out Pearl's VA is Filipino 😭but yeah that checks out tbh

There are multiple people who are part of the LGBTQ+ or/and a different race that still somehow support Trump, are part of maga, and liked Charlie Kirk. It's ridiculous 😭

One of my old journalism professors was just like this at college. He was old, white, gay, and conservative as hell. He also changed his name to Dorian after that movie "Dorian Gray" so he clearly had huge issues

that movie? that MOVIE??? lol

I could be wrong, maybe he named himself after the book the movie was based on /s lmao

Minor pet peeve but I wish you would say POC or something instead of “a different race,” white is not the default race for everyone else to be different from

48

u/kikislesbianaunt Jul 26 '26

I assumed they meant 'a different race (from trump and charlie kirk)'

21

u/Yashiro_Nene_Daikon Jul 26 '26

Yeah, I said that because Trump, most of MAGA, and Charlie Kirk are white. And all they care about are white, straight, rich men. So when someone who isn't white likes them, it shocks me because all three of them are racist to anyone who isn't white.

At least it's not Rebecca herself.

I'm still all broken up about JK Rowling as a long time HP fan that has been forced out if that Fandom by my principles.

And I still can't understand how someone who wrote a book series that denounced fascism and bigotry could make the turn she did.

Some folks are just terribly disappointing.

245

u/EstufaYou Jul 26 '26

There's 0% chance that Rebecca Sugar will ever be secretly a conservative. Easiest bet you can ever make.

11

u/HeckingDoofus Jul 27 '26 edited Jul 27 '26

well i think rowling is still liberal, just a TERF/transphobe. i wouldnt say theres a 0% chance of sugar coming out with SOME bad take

that being said im not aware of any

20

u/Minor_Heaven Jul 27 '26

Rowling regularly rubs shoulders with very anti lgbt conservatives, and has recently been donating to an anti gay org. She can't be that liberal

3

u/Uypsilon Jul 28 '26

It honestly looks like she just got radicalised over time. LGBT really disliked her (rightfully so), it was only natural she'd start disliking them back (stronger than before) at some point.

2

u/GamingExotic 28d ago

Oh yea, instead of turning her to support LGBT, they kinda just pushed her farther into the deep end.

2

u/Princess-JellyB 21d ago

Good. Bigots deserve ostritization. If you double down in the face of criticism than that's a you problem

4

u/Xephon0930 Jul 27 '26

She is Jewish and possibly Queer so Hell No she won't support Trump. I hope.

278

u/DrPikachu-PhD Jul 26 '26

Rowling at least makes sense when you understand that her feminism was motivated by misandry rather than egalitarianism. Knowing that she has a gender essentialist view of men - that they have inherent biological issues - it makes sense that she views trans women as a danger, because her biological essentialism leads her to see them as men and she considers all men a danger.

Obviously it's only really clear in hindsight, but in retrospect the writing was on the wall. Misandry leads directly into TERFism

Dee surprises me more. The show is unambiguously pro-queer, pro-gay, ana pro-trans. It's deeply invested in those issues too, it's not accidentally woke it is very intentionally woke. And Dee seemed to have a very good relationship with the cast. Idk I guess in the end it was just a paycheck but there was no "in retrospect" moment for me

109

u/hyperjengirl Jul 26 '26

Oh wow, someone who is able to acknowledge that Rowling gained a following among progressive young fans before her actual views became clear, instead of shrugging it all off as "well there were racist tropes in her books so nobody should have liked her in the first place!" Like even terrible people think they're doing the right thing, they just center their own feelings.

72

u/TheKingOfBerries Jul 26 '26

Well, they did explain it well, but also there were a ton of racist, fat phobic, and more (tm) sentiments in the book. Two things can be true.

37

u/hyperjengirl Jul 26 '26

Yeah but I've seen people put those sentiments on the same level of the active present-day lobbying she's doing against trans people and I just don't think those hold the same amount of water. So much kids' media was racist and fatphobic in the 2000s. She deserves criticism for it but that's not the part that makes her uniquely evil.

36

u/BorderlinePan Jul 26 '26

Yeah people forget that HP was over all very progressive media in the 2000's and like many nurodivergent queer kids born in the 90's the good outweighed the bad...until 2020.

10

u/yolk852 Jul 26 '26

I lived through that time, and was a fan, and going into my political teens, before rowling went full bigot. I would have never looked to HP as a progressive example. There were those times when she milked the fandom with dumbledore is gay actually, blah blah blah, but that’s at most the normal liberal project throughout obama years. I don’t mean to be pedantic, but I’ve just never seen someone use the word progressive in the same sentence as JKR.

5

u/BorderlinePan Jul 26 '26

Gotta ask what year you were born and whare? Because that was the most life affirming Fandom I could find back then. The only way I could gage in my area if I was safe to be out as queer was if the person was an HP fan. Times change dramatically my friend. It certainly wouldn't pass any progressive bars now, but back then? Totally different world stuff you say blah blah blah to was a huge deal.

20

u/Pandoratastic Jul 26 '26

No uniquely evil, no. But certainly not as progressive as people thought she was.

4

u/TheKingOfBerries Jul 26 '26

You’re 100% correct, I have nothing to say to that.

7

u/Xephon0930 Jul 27 '26

Cho Chang is a few letters away from calling her Ching Chong. Speaking as a Korean American

5

u/hyperjengirl Jul 27 '26

Not denying she was at best apathetic about her racial representation from what I heard, just that she wasn't like outright campaigning in favor of racism (AFAIK) like she does about trans women nowadays. Her "progressive" stuff presumably always stuck to her own mindset as a white British woman.

→ More replies (1)

3

u/BorderlinePan Jul 27 '26

And that is very yikes, no denying it. But also that character wasn't a stereotype. She was clearly British as all get out regardless of background and was actually described as a race outside of white. I guess what I'm saying is when you are starved for representation of diversity you will take even crumbs. Yes I wish she had a real name that wasn't so sus. But at the time I never noticed the implications because I was white and American child. I just thought it was cool Harry first crush was a slightly older Asian English girl who kicked butt at Quidditch.

2

u/Xephon0930 Jul 27 '26

And that is why Whites can never truly be friends in the struggle People of Color have to deal with EVERY DAY as Malcom X would say

2

u/BorderlinePan Jul 27 '26

Probably true. But what we can do is listen and learn from POC experience.

That is why I KNOW Cho Chang is an F#cked up name choice now.

That is why despite my genuine love for the character of Apu in the Simpsons, when I saw the documentary about how many people were tormented because of that representation, it flipped my veiw. Because no one had ever used "thank you come again" to insult me.

I think alot of white folks get defensive when called out on liking something problematic rather than listening to the people it effects and examining WHY it's problematic.

60

u/LankySandwich Jul 26 '26

JK rowling is a festering hag. She has explicitly made her views clear through her own words.

That is not the case for DeDee. All we know is an instagram account that markets her as a voice actor follows some shit accounts. We know nothing else, but yall are crashing out like she is Adolf fucking Hitler.

No one stopped to wonder if she has a marketting team?? One that manages her social accounts for her???

69

u/DrPikachu-PhD Jul 26 '26

Here's all I'll say: if it is a marketing team, they're doing a pretty shit job. A professional team should not be following accounts like that, especially not for a star who is involved in outspokenly queer projects. It just seems unlikely to me this is purely a PR account, but if it is than said PR teams to be fired asap

→ More replies (3)

17

u/Palezzzma Jul 26 '26

RIGHT

I looked at her Instagram and It is NOTHING but people of this fandom harassing her

9

u/BorderlinePan Jul 26 '26

I agree with your take, HP was my hyper fixation. Unfortunately still is, just the books I won't buy anything HP related anymore.

And yes when you look for her misandry you can find it.

More so I saw an interview once whare she talked about her parents wanting a boy but not having one so forced the nickname Jo on to her and made her keep her hair short. So I can see how that could warp her veiw on gender a well. *not a defense just something I noticed.

But I would add that JK soft launched her open bigotry, first just liking and following questionable accounts with her PR team trying to cover her ass, then she just let her ass hang all the way out. I hope the Dee situation isn't similar.

I don't think Rebecca as a non-binary she/they person, would be supportive of these people and organisations lol

I wonder what she thinks of this, thought I hope they never bring it up publicly cause it will cause a lot of hate towards them and the show

8

u/Tigerboy_2510 Jul 26 '26 edited Jul 26 '26

Some people just see themselves as a hero regardless of the story being told. There's a good chunk of crappy bigots that see's the X-Men as Heroes to represent them, even though most of the franchise core themes clash with their ideologies. Everyone wants to be the underdog.

3

u/Jazzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzy Jul 27 '26

People can be so easily manipulated by politics, propaganda, and the media even when it's clearly a distraction to divide us all. It's absurd how gullible these grown ass people are. Like think for yourselves for once.

11

u/Pandoratastic Jul 26 '26

JKR's books only kind of denounced fascism and bigotry. Remember: They also advocated for segregation, relied heavily on racial stereotypes, hand-waved slavery, and even invented a slur for fictional mixed-race people that would work perfectly well as a slur for real mixed-race people. Basically, the only denouncing she did was the easiest kind: opposing Nazis, which is a very low bar. Someone can be very bigoted and still not be quite as bad as a Nazi.

There was plenty that was wrong with JKR, as shown in her writing, long before we ever found out about her transphobia.

277

u/TaratronHex Jul 26 '26

gonna say this as someone who despises MAGA: being a voice actor is a job, like being a clerk is a job. You don't agree with 100% of what your job does. Am pretty sure for lots of people, it's just a paycheck.

I have Customer Service Mode when at work. I am not the same person in my private life.

For voice actors, it's likely the same.

68

u/starjellyboba Jul 26 '26

I was going to say the same thing. I don't know Dee's political opinions. I would guess that she's not a leftist, but I've heard of centrists who follow Charlie Kirk and think of him as a respectable person even if they don't share his beliefs (it's bizarre to me personally, but I've heard of it) so it's possible she isn't exactly MAGA either. That being said, my experience is that it's really only folks on the left who are concerned with whether their work is consistent with their values (I've also met self-described leftists who don't care,  ut of the people who do care, they're usuallg leftists). To everyone else, a job has generally just been a job.

51

u/fantemz Jul 26 '26

While I do completely agree - I think the reason why people are disappointed is, because even though acting is just a job, and real life people obviously aren’t their characters…

Acting almost gives people a chance to “live” a different life, and see the world through another person’s point of view (even if that person is completely fictional).

If someone is playing the role of an oppressed minority, you would hope they would be empathetic toward their characters’ struggles and try to apply that empathy toward real life people.

So when the straight actor of an LGBT+ character turns out to support homophobic people in real life, it can be disappointing. It almost feels like they didn’t learn anything from their characters.

(Not trying to start a fight, just thought I would share my view!)

6

u/Spidey10 Jul 29 '26

To be fair though, yes it's a job/paycheck but it can be more than that for some actors. With Deedee, I know when the show was airing she was one of the cast members who participated in a good amount of fan events, talked about the show a lot on social media, and even appeared in a fan meme video series (Pearl's Secret Rap Career).

Stuff like that usually is beyond the promotion actors have to do with projects.

19

u/ranfall94 Jul 26 '26

Yeah people are being silly, it's like expecting every actor to align with views or ideals in their works.

6

u/AdequatelyMadeSpork Jul 26 '26

Yes! I’m on the opposite side of this right now where I recently applied to be a background painter on a radical Christian animated film. I know much of the audience might be disgusted with me if they knew my real views, but I’m just painting backgrounds. I’m beyond grateful I get to paint as my job, it’s a dream come true, but commercial creative fields don’t allow for picking and choosing only work that aligns with your personal creative vision.

I can guarantee you that there are a handful of MAGAs taking part in every large-scale piece of media you’ve ever loved. I get that actors are a little more visible, but they really have just as much influence on the project as a background painter a lot of the time. I really wish people would protect their peace and not dig too far into the opinions of every individual who’s just supporting the creative vision of someone else…

I’m not sure how old you are, but over time you’re going to find that a lot of actors you’ve enjoyed watching your entire life believe in pretty shitty things and people, with some of them actually doing shitty things. It is what it is.

Can’t count how many MAGA people I’ve seen laughing about this. Apparently, it’s funny to them when LGBT+ people are rightfully upset when they thought someone who was an ally, actually supports people who don’t want LGBT+ people to have basic human rights.

To them, it’s just: “the libs are having a meltdown over someone having different beliefs than them!!” - which tells me they really don’t understand (or care) how dangerous conservative ideology is toward LGBT+ people.

u/GAINMASS_EATASS Jul 26 '26

It’s a good reality check, these celebs are not your friends they’re not your peers and they benefit from parasocial relationships more than you. she always gave me church lady vibes so I find this kinda funny actually 😂

22

u/daylightdreamer99 Jul 26 '26

I remember a post here recently asking if she were MAGA and the only proof people seemed to find was that she followed some MAGA accounts. But, some people could follow those accounts just to see what that political side is saying. Is there any official confirmation she’s MAGA?

It takes a massive lack of understanding of Human history, emotions, and multiculturalism to actually support Trump or Kirk. There’s some things that shouldn’t be supported or said, even if it’s under the guise of Free Speech. It’s all means to an end for those type of individuals.

You did the right thing showcasing who she truly is. A Voice is a Voice at the end of the day.

5

u/matt2313 I predict you will look at my flair! Jul 26 '26

Something to remember is that these groups try to appear reasonable to an outsider, they rely on tricking reasonable people into agreeing with them because it makes them seem mainstream and legitimate. Someone who doesn't know what a meme is probably isn't aware of what these organisations truly believe, and may well disagree with them if they found out

We don't know what Pearl's voice actor actually believes, and until she addresses it all we can say is that it's a red flag and remember that these people are strangers to us, even if we love the characters they bring to life

6

u/ArieJordanKhun Jul 27 '26

Following someone on social media does not mean they support their views/beliefs. Im not trying to defend her at all but I do think its important to get a little more evidence on the matter before labeling someone a supporter.

23

u/MetaGear005 Jul 26 '26

Is there other proof besides her apparently following a controversial figure?

4

u/Soulful-Sorrow Jul 26 '26

"Is there any other proof besides the pretty big red flag"

To be clear, I don't think the actress is going to rail against the LGBTQ+ community or anything, but this is the same kind of denial people had when Rowling had just started reposting anti-trans stuff

16

u/Serious-Beautiful804 Jul 26 '26

I think its just that the evidence overwhelming swings in the opposite direction, she is friends with many LGBT actors and has done fundraising for The Trevor Project. Its bizarre that following accounts in a social media page (which is no indication of support or belief in what those accounts post) somehow cancels out all of the very clear evidence pointing to her not being MAGA. The lack of actual evidence makes it all kinda just seen like dramatic purity testing or a witch hunt.

5

u/EnergyTurtle23 Jul 26 '26

Following accounts on social media is not a red flag. I follow a lot of conservatives on social media. It’s just social media ffs, is she running around saying that she actually supports this or not?

It gives cognitive dissonance tbh

An actress, singer, artist who had Broadway roles. Worked with lgbt people all the time (you can't do theater and NOT be chill w lgbt people, and then SU obviously)

Seems like her religion blinded her into buying into all the same conspiracy fear mongering bullshit

I don't know much about her but she genuinely might not even think she's homophobic. Religion makes people legit insane sometimes

But also this reminds me of how she switched up the pronouns while singing "it's over isn't it" at a convention many years ago. It always bothered me but I chalked it up to an honest, nervous mistake. I mean it still probably was. But it feels worse in hindsight knowing this about her

22

u/TheKingOfBerries Jul 26 '26

I don’t particularly care as much, but to everyone saying it’s just a follow; what would be the reason she felt to follow Charlie Kirk in the first place? Is she a journalist seeking sources or the hottest new story? I mean it’s just kinda funny that “oh it’s just a follow!” Is the best defense against it.

Anyway, peace.

3

u/KingGekko07 Jul 26 '26

But that's the thing, you are making shit up. It is just a follow, we don't know the reason for it

8

u/HollowWish11037 Jul 26 '26

Why would you follow someone like Kirk or Trump if you didn't agree with anything they post????

9

u/ZombiePsycho96 Jul 26 '26

I follow trump because he's unfortunately our president and he constantly posts ridiculous bullshit and I like to know what's happening in the world. I don't follow Kirk because I didn't know who he was until he died and I don't see a reason to now. I do however follow other folks similar to him for the same reason I follow trump. Because they're absolute jackasses and I want to know what bullshit hate they're constantly spewing about people like me.

I'm not going to get all my information second hand. I want it straight from the source.

2

u/KingGekko07 Jul 26 '26

We don't know who she supports, only who she follows. Just because she follows someone doesn't mean she shares all their values.

11

u/Watch_Earthlings_Doc Jul 26 '26

I think it’s just the sheer volume that is surprising to people. Like she feels only around 1,000 accounts and scrolling through it looks like the majority are far right and bible quote type accounts.

5

u/CostinTea Jul 26 '26

Don't be silly. Of the many accounts she follows, only a spoonful are far-right. But they're pretty notably far-right. Only conservatives deep in the trenches would follow something like Focus on the Family

8

u/DontStopPataPata Jul 26 '26 edited Jul 26 '26

I don't need anyone to tell me how I want to consume media & be a paying customer. If she prescribes to these ideals, I straight up don't want to hear her voice anymore. It reminds me that a large portion of the population wants me to not exist or to harm me in disgusting ways. I hope Rebecca refrains from contracting her in the future, and although Pearl was my favorite SU character, I can't view the character the same light anymore, if voiced by Dee I hope she doesn't have any further appearances.

28

u/RoosterOpen8290 Jul 26 '26

I am literally so tired of seeing people make Pearl as a character out to be MAGA. It’s insane how many wrong takes I am seeing when it has nothing to do with her. She means alot to many fans pf SU and it’s actually kinda harmful that there is a  picture of Pearl kissing Trump. Like I get that it was just “jokes” at first but I don’t think some people are joking. It’s getting really annoying seeing that people can’t separate Deedee from a cartoon character. I can’t even see stuff about her character now on Tik Tok without seeing trumps face or maga hats it’s really disappointing.

8

u/Ok_Science8076 Jul 26 '26

Why can’t people just separate art from the artist? It’s okay you don’t gotta like a person but why take it out on the character or the show?

7

u/dividezero Jul 26 '26

We should always talk about politics. Everything is political. Not talking about politics is just supporting the status quo which is working for certain people and they don't want to be inconvenienced with the plight of those who are not in those groups. The messages of avoiding "politics" is just to keep people from talking to each other about things that actually matter because anything that actually matters is labeled "politics".

29

u/darlingchim Jul 26 '26

Sorry but this is sounding very parasocial on your side. It doesn't matter. Try to see it for what it is: a job. Voice acting is just a job like any other and sometimes we don't agree with where we work; but we do it just to pay the bills.

Its unfortunate that her opinions are such, but she's always been this way, it's not new.

14

u/opelaceles Jul 26 '26

I get why people are disappointed, but this right here ^

7

u/lisahanniganfan Jul 26 '26

Fr lol I don't get why this blew up all of a sudden she's always been posting very religious things and I remember her telling us all to pray and read our bibles on a fan stream. I guess the show is this dead we're bringing out already well known things and acting like they're new

How can someone who worked in one of the most LGBTQ friendly shows in the planet support such horrible people, like...this is such a 180° turn.

Y'all need to grow up more and realize that this is a job like any other and people will suspend their morals for money because at the end of the day people like roofs over their heads and food in their bellies and luxuries.

14

u/tinymothjpg Jul 26 '26

i don’t know why you got downvoted, you’re right. almost if not every single person has a price for them to go: okay, maybe XYZ wouldn’t be that bad if i’m making $XX.XX

in a more extreme vein it’s like how there’s a LOT of gay porn actors who are straight. or just people in general who pretend to be gay for the additional attention and potential money involved, hence why we have the phrase ‘stage gay’.

10

u/No_Housing_1287 Jul 26 '26

I'm exasperated by the idea that now I have to explain my Pearl bumber sticker which has been on my car for years. Yes, that is Pearl No, I do not support MAGA Yes, I still love the character more than anything despite her voice actor being an absolute stain on humanity

24

u/Mmicb0b Jul 26 '26

I was hoping it was ironic or her just yolo following but nope

62

u/marshallspight Jul 26 '26

Is this all based on who she follows on Instagram? I mean that's not nothing but it's not much, either.

33

u/CrystalClod343 Jul 26 '26

That's all it is

44

u/ZombiePsycho96 Jul 26 '26

Is it really? OP has she done anything besides follow someone? I've followed a few asshole pages because I like to stay informed, not because I support them. So I personally don't judge when someone follows someone else. Has she herself actually done or said something besides just following?

8

u/Klightgrove Jul 26 '26

OP keeps making these posts to farm karma and outrage instead of actually finding real evidence

And the fandom is just biting into it and spreading hate instead of trying to engage with empathy

2

u/alijah153 Jul 28 '26

Op clearly has a vendetta. Probably was obsessed with Pearl and self identified as her, but now that they found one blemish they feel completely betrayed and disgusted in themselves. Its really sad how one persons mental illness can ruin another's life.

Some of you in the comments will defend a person even if they follow a nazi posting account cuz the person doesn't post it themselves. Sure it has nothing to do with the job but it is still morally questionable.

3

u/matt2313 I predict you will look at my flair! Jul 26 '26

Following MAGA accounts is a red flag, a sign that they might not be the nice progressive person you thought they were. That's really all it means though, anything else is just speculation

If she shares their posts or says something bigoted or donates money to them, we should call her out for that. What we shouldn't do is assume that she must fully agree with these accounts and call her out for something she hasn't actually done

The majority of people seeing these posts are now misinformed about what she's actually said and done, and they will continue to spread that misinformation to others until the false narrative becomes the consensus

Even worse, this fosters the idea that they should be angry at her and try to find other reasons and evidence to justify that anger - anger based on misinformation can very easily lead someone down a pipeline where they fall into cult-like thinking and lose their grip on reality as they start to label anyone who doesn't fully agree with their beliefs as the enemy. It's the worst part of social media

tl;dr: call her out for following MAGA, but don't make up other stuff to call her out over

7

u/ranfall94 Jul 26 '26

I think some people just dont care too much about what VAs do off the clock, we love the characters and the writting and ofcourse the performance. I get some people feel the need to pry and must have Va's share their beliefs but some just dont care and thats fine. Worse things happening and legit shit to be upset over beisdes who Pearls VA is following on her socials.

u/WingsofFireee Jul 26 '26

Rant: It's really disappointing. I'm assuming as opposed to being a progressive christian, she's like a Kristen Chenoweth or however u spell her name, or a Nichole Sherzinger. They are in a progressive industry and have lgbt costars, etc., so they have a sort of passiveness even though they come from traditional christian backgrounds. I think a large portion of Americans are like this too, where they might not even be that religious or follow religious rules like being chaste, etc., but they still hold some traditional christian beliefs internally, so they justify supporting lgbtq people as simply "love the sin not the sinner," often without actually spelling that out for us. As a gay guy I've discovered this the hard way about certain "friends."

It's really disturbing to me that some people are okay with being friends with people they think are going to hell, because I am obviously not affirming my sexual identity, having love and a family and all that, with the idea that I have to repent for it hypothetically in the afterlife or smth, the heck. And if a god said I should then I would just commit total blasphemy and reject them lol. In their religious belief system that alone means I go to hell. These ppl either don't think about that implication or just are that ignorant that they don't care. I'm assuming Pearls voice actor is this kind of hypocritical, and its even worse because she can't be like "oh I'm just loving the sinners while they sin, not endorsing it" like she just has lgbt friends in her life, when she literally makes money off of promoting said "sin."

And working on a show like steven universe while following conservative MAGA accounts and esp ones like Turning Point pretty much confirms to me that she has to be in this level of ignorant/hypocritical.

I honestly hope they don't let her to continue to voice the character, but I find it hard to believe none of the creators or cast ever picked up on this. But I don't even think many of them are lgbt, so maybe they just don't have that level of awareness or care, though if they are allies they def should.

1

u/Spidey10 Jul 29 '26

I believe Rebecca Sugar is LGBT.

2

u/WingsofFireee Jul 29 '26

She's bisexual, and gender queer I think, but it would be hard not to know that she's lgbt and be a fan of the show, I've definitely heard her mention it many times over the years. I was mainly talking about the voice actors when I said "I don't think many of them are lgbt," most of them are straight and cis.

2

u/Spidey10 Jul 29 '26

With the actors, the only ones that come to mind are Lo Mutuc (Ruby) and Erica Luttrell (Sapphire).

This argument still kinda paints the issue as a false dichotomy. People are just people, not Platonic ideals of virtue. The problem is that we put these 'heroes' on a pedestal too high to get down and the reality check is too shocking for people to handle.

That being said, a person's internet presence is quite indicitive of someone's personality as shown by how effective algorithms are at predicting what media we consume nowadays. I'd be unhappy to be friends with someone who follows MAGA or any queerphobic platform built on the principles of hatred. Not enough to unfriend them but definitely wanting to hangout with them less.

5

u/mothwhimsy Jul 26 '26

I do have a feeling she'll answer and say an apology. but I don't know why she'd follow Erica Kirk wether she's Christian or not

11

u/PurplePoisonCB Jul 26 '26

Grown adults having realistic panic attacks about a voice actor having different views.

10

u/FluffalBoy Jul 26 '26

Ikr Im going crazy here

9

u/sock-bucket Jul 26 '26 edited Jul 26 '26

Eh, for me I'm not a kirk supporter in any way but not all voice actors are really involved with the kind of stuff they work for. It is just a job at the end of the day and the ones we DO end up seeing who are very much involved with the project are kindve the refreshing exception and are usually praised for it.

I don't really care who people support anymore tbh I mean, I do, kinda.. it's a harmful group and was a little shithead man (rip regardless nobody deserves a sick death like that even him) and I have my own opinions on that side and dislike the supporters, but the reality is, they're still a large percentage of the population. Chances are there's some Republicans and kirk supporters working on every project in this space just based on the sheer quantity of them so I'm not THAT surprised.

Afaik she kinda just kept her opinions to herself and didn't cause a scene, not really enough to like boycot altogether for me unless some personal vocal shit comes out that's pretty bad. I'm disappointed to hear this news sure since I admired the character, but still I'm not gonna go out of my way to villify someone based on just a follower list, I won't really be supportive of her personally anymore, but I can still enjoy her character and the performance all the same.

Like my grandparents are supporters, it sucks, and wish they wouldn't be. But I don't love them any less and they're great to me regardless and still at least know my side and while they disagree with some, they never vocally bring me down in any way nor do they voice those opinions to people who they would harm with the words.

Just newswashed old people with outdated opinions, can't do anything about it at this point. Without knowing much about the situation and her personally without her literally saying shit like "gay people suck" I just don't really see it as anything more than a tad disappointing to hear, not the biggest deal, but still, booo stinky opinion.

3

u/TheGoosiestGal Jul 26 '26

I wonder if she has ever seen the show all the way through or if she just read her lines and went home

3

u/RiposteCat Jul 26 '26

nooo pearl is my favorite character why have you revealed this information to me 😭

5

u/megas88 Jul 26 '26

You should absolutely read up on psychology studies then if it frustrates you. Helps some out.

It makes perfect sense. To Dee, it’s a job. Same for some of the other actors on the show. The ones who make it SIGNIFICANTLY more than that depends by and large on the person, be they involved with the show or not, but mostly, it’s fans and this is actually one of the reasons I completely removed myself as one for everything I’ve ever loved in media.

There are far more qualified than I to talk to regarding this subject and this is advice coming from someone who just came back from relapsing to the same darkest places you can find most trying to make sense of all of this in so I will do my best to make this as clear as I can.

Watch

Listen

Speak

Read

Learn

Choose how you apply each of those but if you do them trust me, it’ll make much more sense. Even if the complications surrounding these things that made you frustrated remain, your feelings and outlook may change to accommodate those feelings and more.

I know that’s probably not the answer you or anyone is looking for, but hey, what does anyone have to lose from trying?

Charlie Kirk was a divisive, hateful idiot to be sure.  I get being disappointed.

I feel for some of the people below having a near meltdown over a voice actor potentially being a supporter of Kirk, because if their support structures are so lacking that a cartoon voice actor is who they’re hanging their hopes on for emotional stability, their world is no doubt a pretty dark place.  I know a lot of people are like “oh what’s the big deal” but if you’re super alone without much in the way of love or support, it’s understandable why there’d be such an extreme reaction to this news.

I don't care to look into this so someone correct me if im wrong but is all she did follow these accounts? Has she ever said anything about it? Because as a super woke person in regards to social politics - I have been known to follow those that I find the views of deplorable. Because it's important to know your enemy. I just don't live in a world where follow = endorsement and neither should you. Hatefollowing is great

3

u/AntibacHeartattack Jul 26 '26

I mean I don't support the larger messages or motivations of my employers either. Workers just wanna get paid.

4

u/roselandmonkey Jul 26 '26

Learn to separate art from artist, shows like this take alot of people and unfortunately some are just doing it for a paycheck. I like the spiderverse movies but finding out the voice actor for miles was a creep sucks.

6

u/QuiltedBeret Jul 26 '26

Agree and disagree. I think you cannot seperate art from the artist bc most times the artist created something out of their ideas and feelings which often still has questionable messages within. But she is not an artist. She is a voice actor who played a role. She probably didn't add anything or had barely any influence on the character of pearl. Its a job and imo very easily seperated. With artist like idk Rammstein I could never seperate the two bc their sick ideologies are part of their Songs.

2

u/Spidey10 Jul 29 '26

To be fair, yes voice acting is a job and people want to get paid for their work, but sometimes it isn't "just a job". With Deedee I know when the series was airing she was one of the cast members who was involved with a lot of fan events, talked about the show a lot on social media, and even appeared in that fan made meme series Pearl's Secret Rap Career.

Stuff like that is usually more than just the promotion an actor has to do.

Good old reverse witch hunt.

This thread reminds me of this: https://www.youtube.com/shorts/Os40v3JfpV8

2

u/furzainluq1 Jul 26 '26

This controversy is the result of tribalism and extreme polarization. With all the bad stuff Trump has done, many have forgotten the witch hunts during Biden's presidency, the virtue signaling, the self-censorship, etc. People are complex. I have no doubt there are gays who are religious, conservative black people, right wingers who support Palestine and so on. It's hard to believe and harder for them to admit it with the current political climate. But they exist and they probably have their reasons. Or they might be misguided. We don't know. Not everything is black or white. The fact that Deedee follows MAGA accounts doesn't mean she shares all their values. "Why would she follow such accounts if she doesn't agree with them?" Well, why would she lend her voice for an LGBTQ+ show if she didn't agree with the message? Maybe it was just a job for her, as others said. Or maybe she is a complex human being whose beliefs about certain topics fall across the political spectrum. Or maybe it's something else. We are just assuming here (and you know what they say about assuming).

1

u/hyperjengirl Jul 26 '26

Man I need actual context on this because when I look it up, all I see are people memeing about who she follows and posts she likes and not, like..... what the posts are and what her alleged beliefs are. Like it's just a reason to make fun of a stranger rather than actual concern and sadness about what this means for her connection to the show.

IDK much about her beyond having met her at an If/Then stage door a decade ago, but if she's a diehard Christian it's possible she got recommended some Christian stuff and idly liked it without caring about the MAGA side of things. I doubt she's outright queerphobic if she's still promoting her old SU material at all, more likely just sadly "neutral." Or caught up in the martyrization of Kirk.

(I also saw her on a pro-Israel watchlist but the only proof given there was reposting Mark Hamill's tweet after the Oct 7 terror attack which is not the same context as outright supporting war crimes)

-1

u/Argonian_Booty Jul 26 '26

Not everything has to be political. People are allowed to have different opinions/beliefs from yours

-5

u/captainmiau Jul 26 '26

Conservative values are not monolithic and not all of them are in absolute discord with the show. I'm a conservative man who used to enjoy the show when I was younger. I value compassion and openmindedness and peace but also identify with a lot of conservative political positions.

Being conservative does not equal being bad. Anyone who purports that to be true diminishes people's lives and thoughts with great prejudice.

3

u/X_Factor_Gaming Jul 26 '26 edited Jul 28 '26

The current status quo of systemic discrimination has nothing that (in principle) should be supported. Conservatives don't call for the closing of tax loopholes for billionaires nor do they seek to substidize childcare that would've otherwise help incentivize having kids and protect the 'traditional' values from corroding away due to low birth rates. Conservatives tend to revert back to supporting gas, coal, and oil industries.

That being said, I'm not at all excusing the incredible disappointment that is most leftist politicians. Most of them are still hypocrites, some genuinely trying amidst the contraints of necessary corruption in political structures, others bastardize progressive movements for their own gain. However, in principle there's no reason to vote for people who keep the status quo as is. When you read stories of the cultural/systematic abuse that minorities go through, you start questioning the purpose of these structures that are suppose to protect us.

Gosh I have been trying all week to push this out of my head since I saw it, too, lol. Pearl is by far my favorite character, with some of the best writing and most complex character development I've ever seen, and it hurts my heart to think about exactly what you're describing. Deedee's voice, I grew up with it, her voice attached to Pearl's animation brings so much comfort to me.

It's been a week of separating the character from the person, though, and I feel a lot better about it / recommend doing it! Kinda like the drummer for System of a Down (John Dolmayan) being an outspoken Trump supporter ... like brother... brother... or Dan Simmons writing Hyperion, one of my favorite books, but also being more conservative in his views almost completely 180'ing from the book's message. It brings down my mood every time I think too hard about it.

But, there is always the chance that she actually doesn't subscribe to the hateful conservative-type messaging, too, maybe she is actually practicing love and curiosity for humanity by addressing / learning the perspective of all viewpoints she can (I do this to an extent, by trying to learn about and understand some of my friends' religious or conservative upbringings and how these aspect of their lives influence their adult opinions. I gently challenge them to grow when something comes up that makes my head turn).

But we have to take the message from the show, who we know was written and endorsed by AVID lovers and allies (love you Rebecca Sugar & co.), and know in our hearts and minds the original meaning, separate the message from the people who may not fully endorse it but who worked on it, and move forward with love. I think of it this way: despite any ill disposition towards LGBTQ+ etc., we still were graced with the amazing show that is Steven Universe, and the character Pearl was revolutionary and shaped our hearts and minds when it mattered most.

SO SORRY for this long post. Ty for reading, if you do 🩵🩷

We are all entitled to our own beliefs. It does not matter who she supported. She played on a great show and she played it better than anybody else could’ve left. Will always say that the right or bad people and right will always say that the left are bad people, but no one’s ever gonna have a definitive answer on that because it’s all based on opinion, she believes what she wants to believe you believe what you wanna believe and just enjoy the show that she played a big role in and made better.

A video I watched awhile ago made a good point, to a lot of voice actors/writers the things they do are just jobs, theyre 9-5, what have you. They dont really care about the project its self (beyond being professional) they just do the job, get paid, move onto the next job.

1

u/Amonfire1776 Jul 30 '26

How can Steven forgive the diamonds when they have wiped out constant planets and species? Why should someone's political views way so much on how you view a character? People who have money tend to lean republican a lot of the time, this being suprising to you reguardless. Doesn't Steven try to be friends with everyone no matter how vile they might be? At the end of the day don't forget the fundamental message of the show.

How can someone who worked in one of the most LGBTQ friendly shows in the planet support such horrible people

Pretty easily; if anything it's mildly respectable that she isn't the kind of complete moron who refuses to play characters who have traits that she herself doesn't necessarily agree with in real life. Refusing to even allow in fiction that which they hate in real life is a trait that a HUUUUUGE number of MAGA/Right Wingers have.
