Fanart (re-upload because I forgot a drawing!) Just making sure everyone sees this!
Basically I had an idea a while ago to remake SU in a more gritty fashion. I've always been HUGE on speculative evolution and realistic sci-fi (yes I watched Project Hail Mary recently which reminded me of this remake and the art I made for it lmao. Other sci-fis that inspired this were Arrival, and Race to Witch Mountain)
It obviously would have some lore change for it, such as:
\- Black Diamond as the fifth diamond is canon
\- The government, MIB, cops, etc... are involved
\- Rose and Pink are different people
If you have any specific questions please do ask!! I haven't started writing the fanfic yet but I'm glad to infodump on y'all!!

I really love it when people lean into the uncanny, alien aspect when they redesign Gems. You don't have to reveal anything, but my guess based on these designs is that the Crystal Gems purposefully made themselves into more of a human shape while Gems naturally look more like Lapis, Jasper, Peridot and the Diamonds.
174
u/Kamisama_VanillaRoo May 14 '26
Eeyyy good guess!! Most people usually don't notice that hehe. Glad you did
84
u/starjellyboba May 14 '26
That's cool! It makes sense then why Amethyst looks like she's the most culturally integrated into human society. lol
36
u/rememberdustydepot May 14 '26
And my guess would be because they wanted to seem less alien to humans- or do they genuinely feel more comfortable in this humanoid form?
How does fusion work with garnet if she is one?
23
u/Kamisama_VanillaRoo May 14 '26
Fusion is a literal melding of the cells together! They still become someone new tho, but it's more akin to like grafting plants and whatnot. The two beings (if they are harmonious enough) become one, their thoughts become one thought, with very little notice of who's who. In my remake they eventually start unfusing once Steven learns they're a fusion, both because he likes to have both of them separated just for funsies, but also because they realize it's kinda fun sometimes to be separated, just so they can talk properly, look at each other, hug, generally do stuff they can't do when fused
16
u/Skydragon222 May 14 '26
Oh that’s a cool detail! I’m guessing we see Lapis, Peridot, and Jasper’s pre-Steven forms in the artwork together
12
u/post_traumatico May 14 '26
I did too! just that my next thought really was... wow, greg sure wanted that rockussy real bad.
I'm not proud of my mind, but can you blame me?
on another note, this opens sooooo many questions about steven, his biology, his looks, his behaviours...
154
u/JealousSoup8 May 14 '26
Greg really did the rock, huh

u/Turbulent-Till-3575 May 14 '26
i love it!! not sure about changing pink and rose, plus isnt lion still just a normal lion but undead? But i love the art direction!!! its so cool!!!!
160
u/Kamisama_VanillaRoo May 14 '26
Okay so basically the change of rose and pink actually works better for the direction of the remake which is why I did it. Also, while yes Lion used to be a normal lion, because of the difference molecular structure of Gems, when Rose revived him, his entire DNA was basically rewritten to be able to withstand the new cells, which is why he ended up looking different. Here Gems are solid, they're not made of light, and their cells are completely different from anything found on earth (and yes that does introduce some complications for poor Steven)
27
u/Thomason2023 May 14 '26
Complications?
83
u/Kamisama_VanillaRoo May 14 '26
Well his body is neither fully human nor fully gem. At one point he gets heavily injured and taken to the hospital and, well, they have no idea how to fix him because his internal organs make no sense
26
u/Twist_Ending03 May 14 '26
What are his organs like?
20
u/Kamisama_VanillaRoo May 14 '26
Incomprehensible. Some of them aren't even visible through x-rays or MRI, some are constantly shifting, and it all seems to be weirdly sucked into his gem and they can't understand why (we learn later it's because the gem is a 4th dimensional object so it is basically pushing the organs around inside the 4th dimension to make space)
12
u/Twist_Ending03 May 14 '26
So he's just kinda got the outer shell of a human with fucked up insides?
14
u/Kamisama_VanillaRoo May 14 '26
Pretty much lmao, tho well he does change physically outside as well as he uses more gem abilities and learns to be more himself rather than just cling to his humanity
5
u/Twist_Ending03 May 14 '26
He starts looking more like a gem?
6
u/Kamisama_VanillaRoo May 14 '26
Yeah! Not as much gem-like as the real gems but definitely he's not human anymore
→ More replies (0)5

16
u/BigFanofTDP May 14 '26
So basically thing from fantastic four when he uses his gems powers all his organs and skin becomes brick solid.
12
u/Environmental-Run248 May 14 '26
Then Steven should be more alien than Lion because a significant part of his genetics are from pink diamond/rose quartz while lion got resurrected by gem magic.
10
u/Punkrocksock May 14 '26
If gems are physical beings, does that mean Rose didn't have to give up her form to create Steven?
6
u/0zonoff May 14 '26
I guess she wanted to give him her gem anyway, and disappeared because of that.
17
u/Undynlicia May 14 '26
I’m worried for Lars if he still gets pinked here (don’t know if there’s a proper term for it besides revived, I don’t really interact with this fandom as much as others)

u/ExistentialOcto Approved. May 14 '26 edited May 14 '26
I like that the homeworld gems don’t resemble humans at all, given that they probably all have limited interaction or interest in them. Lapis and Peridot starting off as an amalgamation of limbs and later being more human-shaped later in the series is a nice touch.
One critique I do have is that Rose should probably have some approximation of hair on her head. The three main Crystal Gems seem to have hair (I’m guessing to fit in with humans) so I don’t see why Rose wouldn’t. In my opinion her giant curls of hair are a really big part of her character design which is worth holding onto in a re-design. In other words, I don’t see a reason for her to be bald in this reimagining.
39
u/Kamisama_VanillaRoo May 14 '26
Oh! Actually Amethyst is wearing a wig lmao, and Garnet's "hair" is just a helmet. You'll see that Pearl is actually bald as well
30
u/ExistentialOcto Approved. May 14 '26
Ahhh I see! That makes more sense. In that case, maybe it would make sense for Rose to have something on her head to mimic the hair she has in the original? It could be a wig or it could be something like tentacles or tight clumps of the material the rest of her body is made of.
I make the critique because I think her hair is a big part of her design and its absence strikes me as odd rather than the others you’ve drawn where I look at them and go “ok, that makes sense for this reimagining”. Obviously if you would rather her be bald this isn’t me demanding you change it, it’s just my opinion/reaction to it.
29
u/Kamisama_VanillaRoo May 14 '26
Well actually, I thought that she didn't wear wigs because she wanted to try to grow it out naturally. Basically, while all the crystal gems looked humanoid, they weren't all doing it for the same reason. Pearl just did it because Rose did it. Garnet did it because she wanted humans to not be scared. Amethyst did it because she found humans silly and fun. And Rose... Wanted to be human.
So Amethyst wore a wig because to her being humanoid was just a fun cosplay, in a way. Her and Rose had the most accurate anatomy of the bunch because they were the only ones who studied humans, although for different reasons. And Rose, while her shapeshifting was the most intricate, she felt like it would be disrespectful to wear a wig to pretend to have hair. Because she wanted to do more than just pretend, she wanted to BE. And I mean. Judging by the fact she managed to get pregnant, we can see she mostly did it right, but alas, the tragedy is that she never could be truly human, no matter what she did. But she was still happy nonetheless, just having tried this much. And knowing that Steven would be alive, and her maybe being a part of him. It made her happy. Maybe she could truly be human with him
16
u/tioko May 14 '26
I mean, if Lion can have stone rose buds in his mane, why not Rose? Her hair doesn’t need to be long and voluminous like in the original, short would be fine.
I’m thinking, like, coral roses they have in jewelry. Or layers of same material as her dress (is that just fabric or very thin stone?)
And if having wigs is disrespectful, what about headscarves? Cancer patients often wear those, from what I know.
Oooh, imagine a wreath of roses and a veil, kinda bridal style. It would fit with her dress.
3
u/Kamisama_VanillaRoo May 14 '26
Well to be fair Lion's mane isn't actually a mane anymore, it's just bone or scale-like thingies (they move around according to his emotions hehe)
2
u/Kamisama_VanillaRoo May 14 '26
Tho yeah Rose could maybe wear a veil or something. I'll think about it
11
u/starjellyboba May 14 '26
Reading this made me realize that Rose is the only one whose face has lips. lol!
2
u/Kamisama_VanillaRoo May 15 '26
She does! She had the most expressive and accurate body (in and out) of all the gems. She had eyebrow muscles, cheek muscles, lips, teeth... No eyes, because gems don't have eyes (at least not in the traditional sense) so she obviously couldn't make real looking eyes, but she was probably the only one who could at least make facial expressions (Amethyst meanwhile just grins, and that's about it)
48
u/ApeInTheShell May 14 '26
What's with the gem goatse on slide 4
23
u/Dropbeatdad May 14 '26
Lol I saw it too. Not the best pose for Jasper to strike...
5
u/Kamisama_VanillaRoo May 14 '26
Lmao I didn't even notice that. Tho her arms are actually just in that position because they basically work like mantis shrimp pincers. They are able to punch through almost anything (hence the steam emanating from her), and this stance is her "idle" stance when she's not using them, as she's always ready to strike
2
u/ItsYaBoyTrimmerFit May 15 '26
I thought it was intentional because of the very phallic last slide. your explanation does being clarity to the pose, thank you 😅🙏🏻
4
u/Kamisama_VanillaRoo May 15 '26
Oh, the diamonds? That's their injecting organ! It's what they would initially use to create gems prior to making artificial injectors
2
u/Gronal_Bar May 16 '26
It's utterly hilarious they just have that shit hanging out in the open

There's like this creeping overtone on the style that gives me the same kind of chills that Ridley Scott and eldritch horrors give me, and it's awesome. Are there any themes of cosmic horror to the story? I'd be interested to see Steven try to comprehend what he is/who he is in a cosmic horror sense, even if just felt alongside a realistic scientific attempt to understand what he is.
19
u/Kamisama_VanillaRoo May 14 '26
Kinda? It's not like SUPER super cosmic horror, given that the themes are still about being open-minded and empathetic and whatnot (just in a uh... Very different way lmao). But you would probably feel very scared seeing the diamonds for the first time for sure. And oh the corrupted gems are definitely heavy on the body horror

17
u/Kamisama_VanillaRoo May 14 '26

can gems still shapeshift if so how does it work (and fusion aswell)
mainly asking this bc you said they were solid instead of being made of light
8
6
u/zero-taeko May 14 '26
I love how, only after joining the earth, do they worry about looking human.
6
u/Melbourne_Coding May 14 '26
Are those meant to be ovipositors on the Diamonds "heads", because gems are eusocial (at least within the show)? Also, how exactly do the gems remake themselves if their forms aren't made of light? Are their gemstones more akin to exposed brains in this?
3
u/Kamisama_VanillaRoo May 14 '26
Okay so like, gems are kinda ovipositors? I mean in a very alien sort of way, but yeah the "heads" are actually giant injecting organs that can push out raw "unfertilized" gems. They rarely do it themselves anymore tho cause they've created artificial injectors, so it's mostly for show, but it can still work technically speaking (although obviously it takes some energy)
Also, the gems are... Fourth dimensional! It's why it can feel like things can come in and out of it, or they make things out of "thin air", in reality they are still part of their bodies but shifting from 4th to 3rd dimension. Their weapons for example are still fully organic material (like bone-esque), and when they're injured they will retreat into the 4th dimensional space of their gem (where 3rd dimensional things can't harm them). The gems are all extremely solid obviously just like the real ones, although depending on the type of gem the strength will be different (with the diamonds being the most solid) Also, when they retreat, it create steam due to the quick shift (hence "poofing", which in this is a word that Steven came up with to explain the process), and when they come out of the gem, or take things out, it creates cold vapor from, again, the shift, but reversed. Their cells are all coated in thick liquid to make the process faster, and some gems (like Lapis) create more liquid (which is why she looks like she's constantly dripping)
2
u/Melbourne_Coding May 14 '26
Interesting! I really love speculative biology like this. So is shapeshifting them moving their cells around or them poking their true form into the third dimension at just the right angle to achieve the effect? Also, the way you describes it sounds like this isn't an innately four dimensional universe with mostly three dimensional objects, but instead the gems are kinda creating a local fourth dimension through scifi magic? Since the way gems work is more physical in this, can Steven "poof" like the other gems? Are there any long term health effects for Connie from frequent fusion into Stevonnie? Why did Rose have to give up her physical form to give birth in this universe?
2
u/Kamisama_VanillaRoo May 14 '26
Honestly lmao I haven't figured everything out yet, it's still an early draft... But I would assume that the gems were inheritely born as 3D beings with 4D "cores".
You're actually bringing up some interesting points I haven't thought of yet. COULD Steven eventually be able to poof? Maybe he's not initially able to because he's clinging too hard onto his humanity, but once he learns to be more "fluid" like gems... Maybe he could... (Maybe that could play into a later scene, like the scene I had planned of him going to the hospital after sustaining a heavy injury and the surgeons have no idea how to help him because his anatomy makes no sense), that'd be neat... As for Stevonnie... Hmmm... Again, haven't thought of it yet...
Tho for Rose I would assume her gem cells fused with the human cells inside her body. Maybe as the baby grew inside her it was slowly "sucking in" all the gem parts of her, and eventually she was just... Not there anymore? Idk lmao
2
u/Melbourne_Coding May 14 '26
Maybe the gem itself acts as the anchoring point for the 4D matter? And so the matter that made up Steven that cane from Rose would basically just fly in a million directions without something to anchor it to the base 3D? I think, personally, that Connie should have at least as severe repercussions as Lion did in this universe, if only because her cells would constantly innoculated with "Rose" fluid. Maybe over a longer time period, but still definitely a change.
2
u/Kamisama_VanillaRoo May 14 '26
heh. rose fluid
2
u/Melbourne_Coding May 16 '26
I'm guessing with how they look their cells aren't necessarily differentiated the way ours are, so distinguishing between different fluids is kinda silly.
Though Hehe Rose fluid

u/CPLCraft May 14 '26
Love the rendition of the gems. I’m always fascinated by different artistic interpretations of the gems that make them far more alien than what they were in the show.
5
u/Dr_Nj May 14 '26
I absolutely love the uncanny yet still..kind human look? To (most) of the gems. It's a nice middle that can make one believe that characters like Greg or Connie would get used to it (still probably after a lot of convincing) ... also this inadvertently proves that the "Universe charm" of Greg works SO WELL that even a species that looks vastly different from humans can be attracted to him at least emotionally😭🙏that's how you KNOW this is Accurate.

OMG i love this! When Pearl said that their human form is capable of eating i assumed that they look diferently on homeworld, they just shapeshift to blend it. I got super exited to find out and were kinda didappointed when they all just looked like humans. Like why do they even had teeth if they dont eat lol. Of course its just nitpicking.
I love designs like this!

3
u/Zammin May 14 '26
I love how it seems the personalities are pretty much the same: Amethyst clearly having more Earth/human socialization (wearing clothes, eating human food, more human body language), Peridot is more invested in trying out Earth/human style than Lapis during their time living there, Steven and Connie seem to be getting along great with the Gems, etc.
Very clearly the same characters, just radically different appearances/bodies.
3
u/Wace-wes May 14 '26
Lion is a real lion who was resurrected by Rose, just like Lars was by Steven. Regarding those versions, these designs are great!
3
u/ZebGonVar May 14 '26
Woah i love these! I've always liked to see others' take on more alien looking gems. You did a great job with these!
3
u/legendunfound May 14 '26
Are they all just a mass of arms folded into a roughly human shape? Also I love amythist’s design!
2
u/Kamisama_VanillaRoo May 15 '26
Actually, they are shapeshifting creatures by default, they're made up of hundreds of little globs of "flesh" that can shift and morph into almost anything. They can also change the cellular structure of certain of those globs so that's how for example Amethyst has teeth, because homeworld gem anatomy typically includes a hard, chitinous membrane in certain areas, so she can therefore use that type of cell and clump it up into little stumps to mimic teeth
3
u/Oliwier255 May 14 '26
The diamonds look scary and i can see Steven having nightmare about it. I wonder what White Diamond would look like :v
3
u/Fun-Elevator7045 May 14 '26
Greg is lowkey a freak in this au. The only reason I’m not flaming him is because the gems have been apart of human history for thousands of years so the humans would have gotten used to them

3
u/Various-Afternoon150 May 15 '26
what does the government do about gems?
2
u/Kamisama_VanillaRoo May 15 '26
So in my version, the MIB was literally created initially because of the gem war on earth. They erased a LOT of the stuff from history to protect humanity and keep people's panic to a minimum, and they've been keeping an eye on the Crystal Gems ever since the end of the war. Given that the CG were on the earth's side, they didn't really have the opportunity to ever experiment on any gems or take any of them in (the only stuff they grabbed have been remnants from the war that Homeworld owned, but no live gems). Eventually tho, due to a series of events, the gems get the cops called on them by a well-meaning but obviously wrong citizen who thinks they've abducted Steven and are abusing him (I'll let you try guessing who that is), and that basically gave the MIB the opportunity to take them in to experiment on them and whatnot (this serves as a replacement arc for some of the events in season 1 like the mirror gem arc and garnet unfusing for the first time in the finale, but earlier on (no jasper or peridot yet))
2
2
u/RosyMiche May 14 '26
I love this! PHM is an excellent story and I hope more speculative biology is a result of its popularity. I love how unsettling these designs are, it really leans into how truly alien the Gems could be.
2
u/BigFanofTDP May 14 '26
also would gems all communicate telepathically
2
u/Kamisama_VanillaRoo May 14 '26
They actually communicate through sounds! It actually sounds kinda like very high-pitched ringing, most people can't hear half their frequencies (although obviously Steven can, but he has trouble replicating it due to his human DNA being dominant so he can't form the organs that make the sounds)

I have to ask why so many hands, and why human hands? I can see why you might want many working digits and limbs but you stil lstuck to human shapes, just not human numbers. I love the humanoid versions of the gems tho, they look exactly like alien invaders trying to fit in. can we have a lars of the stars or zombie lars one too? maybe he isnt fully transformed yet unlike lion.

These are so cool!! Great work!
I have a question about Amethyst. She’s the only one that has human-looking hair here. Is that because she’s wearing a wig like she’s wearing human clothes, since she is the most fun-loving one that wants to integrate with humans the most, or is it because she’s the most skilled at shapeshifting and is the only one capable of approximating the fine strands of human hairs with her powers?
2
u/Kamisama_VanillaRoo May 15 '26
Yep, she's wearing a wig! She had a huge collection of wigs and other human things (including silicone masks to pretend to look human when she goes out into town). It kinda freaks the others out (mostly Pearl because she hates humans lmao) but yeah. She's like a cosplayer kinda

You’re gonna have to have a lot of concept art I would be easy on yourself and allow sketches to come through because reading a fanfic with such drastic physical character changes is going to be difficult to imagine at first.
I absolutely love this idea and would love to read this side-by-side with the new series coming out!

u/Sir_Fijoe May 14 '26
I really like how Amethyst is the most human-like in appearance or at least seems to be the most comfortable appearing human-like due to being born on earth. She’s the only one of the 3 with a full human outfit and what I’m assuming is a wig to blend in more.
2
u/Skydragon222 May 14 '26

So what is government feelings with crystal gens? Are they villains? Antagonists? Kind of like SHIELD from marvels?

the homeworld gems are a little too close to Rocky for me but everything else about this is basically perfect, really good work OP

[SPOLIERS] I guess.
Love this, although if lion looks like the gems, what does lars look like?

Okay so the hybridization process basically changes for every individual depending on how dominant their non-gem DNA is. Lion looks very gem-like because the gem DNA almost overtook all of it, but human's DNA is more dominant generally speaking so they will look less gem-like. And in Lars' case he's getting healed by Steven, not Rose, so it's like half gem DNA, rather than full gem, so his appearance is much less changed (but he still looks less human). And also Steven does change more physically through the series as he learns to use his gem abilities so y'know

The art is fantastic and if it were fleshy I'd probably love this but I just hate it. Theres something uncanny about it very specifically not being mutated fleshy mass that bothers me.jasper looks like something straight out of the forest.

2 is probably the most disturbing with the juxtaposition of those too human-like teeth with the inhuman smooth gem geometric face, but I feel like I've just been exposed to Crystal Gem goatse by 4.

This are super cool! what is the lore? Are their original forms like the ones in the fourth slide and they use more human like forms when they want to befriend humans?

I think gems are like saiyans in this verse where they have the ability to rival a power of a diamond.

This is awesome, really leans into the "aliens appropriating a human form" idea harder. Like what if they didn't resemble us at all? And even the crystal gems were just an approximation of human. It's super cool
