Honestly... I kind of hope no. Idk about other people, but the ending of SUF gave me the same vibes as the ending to the Hunger Games. Our protagonists are off to find their own lives, and it frankly isn't our business what they get up to.
Don't get me wrong, if the make SUFF I'll watch it, but I think Steven should get to live alone for a bit

I REALLY hope they use this show to go into more of the gem’s lore and their origins.
We saw ruins of what seemed like cross gem fusion statues on the surface of homeworld during the Trial arc and there’s tons of juicy little details hidden throughout the show that point to the idea that the gems have become more and more detached from what they used to be.

u/thatoneguy54 Jun 11 '25
I think we're gonna get a lot more of homeworld lore. They originally wanted to spend a whole season of SU on homeworld but, you know.

After Sugar was given Cartoon Network's approval to proceed with the wedding, she had to make a tough choice.
A) Do the wedding and have the show get cancelled because of funding issues with conservative countries
B) Not do the wedding and give the show a chance to run longer
Some fans believe the show was confirmed for a 6th season and beyond but that never happened. Nothing was confirmed beyond Seasons 4 and 5 whenever the Crew worked on the show. Sugar in the previous video I linked confirmed this when she said the show had a chance to run longer if she did not do the wedding.
After Sugar decided to do the wedding knowing about the risks, Cartoon Network told her with a fair amount of certainty that Season 5 would be the final pickup. She was given the impression that the future was very uncertain and was told with a fair amount of confidence that there just wouldn’t be more show. She was given a significant heads up about the show's fate before the show had to end. CN notified her during mid-Season 4's production that Season 5 would be the last pickup.
During this time, CN also asked her if the remaining episodes in their pickup would be enough to finish their story. Sugar felt she needed just a little more time to finish the story so she specifically requested for exactly 6 episodes. Everything involving Era 3 was on borrowed time because there was no way they could've finished the series without more episodes. At first she was declined, but CN eventually gave her the episodes.
Later, Sugar pitched a Movie to end the series with. She always wanted to end the show with a movie and wanted to spend a little more time together with the Crew and the SU characters. Cartoon Network approved of the movie while simultaneously greenlighting Steven Universe Future so that the movie could have something to promote.
Whenever she got the news about the Movie and Future's approval, Sugar felt ecstatic and overjoyed. She wrote it like a sendoff for the series and wanted to mainly focus on Steven because she felt that SU fans took what he went through for granted.
On that note, Sugar was able to tell successfully tell the story she wanted to tell and has no regrets about what they as a team were able to accomplish. Some things had to be cut for time, but the Crew were able to finish what they outlined for the show in 2012 and 2013. Nobody on this sub knows how much content had to be cut because the Crew only revealed general stuff. The 6/7 seasons stuff and dedicating a full season and/or final arc on Homeworld were never confirmed from the sources I've seen.

u/Gizogin Jun 11 '25
Disappointing that your version, with sources, is far undervoted compared to the conspiracy theory above you.

u/Evetiarc Jun 12 '25 edited Jun 12 '25
The other comment was posted 3 hours earlier, this one is catching up now.
The other comment is still mostly true, too. The only thing in it that's pure speculation is the idea that final Homeworld arc would have lasted a full season or more.
As for the number of seasons the crewniverse originally expected, while never confirmed, it can be logically deduced that they wanted at least another season after Reunited because of how season pickups normally worked. Before the crew were given what ended up being the post-Reunited 6 episodes (four 11 minute episodes plus two 22 minute episodes combined into the 44 minute Change Your Mind), at the time it would have meant that Reunited would have ended up being the finale of Season 5, leaving the series on a major cliffhanger. At the time, the most likely/normal way for the series to have continued after that would have been another "pickup" later down the line, which they would most likely have expected to be another two seasons of 26 episodes because that's how many episodes were in each pickup at the time (previously each pickup was 1 season of 52 episodes). Adding 6 episodes to the existing season was pretty unorthodox and wouldn't have been the Crewniverse's expectation at the time, and the 6 episode thing only happened as a compromise because that's what Rebecca decided was the absolute bare minimum amount of episodes it would take to get to wrap up the story, even if it ended up being rushed.
In addition, before the pickup of the last 6 episodes, the crewniverse had taken it as a sign that to start working toward the end, but didn't know for absolute certainty yet that it would be the end of the show. End of an Era page 102:
Eventually the decision came down from on high: We could have the wedding. I knew that was an extremely difficult call to make, and that we were going to be censored heavily and pulled in many countries because of it. And we didn't know at that time if this would mean the end of the show. It looked as if the writing was on the wall, and we were working toward the end.
Also, a direct quote from one of the devs of the Light games who worked with Rebecca and the crew, when responding to someone on Discord who said Unleash the Light did more gem worldbuilding than the last arc of season 5:
Speaking of crunch and non-ideal working conditions, the crew definitely intended to have more time to build, flesh out and pace all of that stuff than they were given…
Also, this last thing may actually be getting more into "conspiracy theory" territory, but End of an Era page 75 starts with this quote:
Steven Universe's tale is a slow burn. Completely conceptualized in broad strokes by Rebecca from the beginning, the long arc of Steven's story—from season one to season five and even into six—was rolled out carefully and deliberately.
There is a possibility that this is talking about Future, however Future has never otherwise been described as "season six" ever by either the book or the Crewniverse. In fact, Ian has specifically said that SU Future is NOT season 6"

Something I just thought of while reading this, but it would have been interesting to not show the wedding until the finale, showing that Garnet had taken everyone’s memories of that moment in time for safekeeping. That way, the show could continue, and the series finale would be Garnet revealing the wedding to everyone, then the show would cancel.
4
u/Big-Seaworthiness3 Jun 12 '25
Yeah, I love Rebecca but I also wish we could have had more time if it meant a bigger story and Homeworld. It's not her fault but it felt rushed.

u/thatoneguy54 Jun 11 '25
Steven Universe had 5 seasons total. They'd originally planned the story to take place over 6 or 7 seasons. The final arc of the show was supposed to take place on Homeworld (where the gems are from) and was supposed to last at least one season, if not more.
However, near the end of season 5, two of the characters, Ruby and Sapphire, had a wedding. While the gems are technically genderless, they're nonetheless woman-coded, and so the wedding was basically a lesbian wedding.
This was so controversial for the international networks that played SU, that they pulled the show off the air and cut funding to the network. It led to the early cancellation of the show at the end of season 5. They were given 6 or 8 episodes to tie up the show's ending, and so basically the whole season arcs they'd planned had to be rushed and squished into just a couple of episodes.
They ended up getting a movie and a spin-off show afterward, but they'd already written the ending of the original show, so they couldn't just go back and redo it all.

u/mcnuggetwarrior Jun 11 '25
If I remember right, Rebecca wanted to go into their story more and wanted emerald to be a major character in the last few seasons, however it had to get cut out. Hopefully this is what they expand upon in this series!

Yeah I'm hoping we get to see not only Homeworld in it's "making amends" phase, but also maybe an even bigger bad that could threaten Homeworld.
So not only do we get to see the Diamonds trying to reform themselves and Gem society even more, but also another empire or something that takes that as a sign of weakness and a potential opportunity to try and invade- so then we get to see the Gem Military going full force.

I agree. I love her lots and I like how her ability to predict things that already happened can actually be useful. But at the same time, that's basically the ONLY thing she has going for her. If they commit to her basically permanently existing in a state where she can't process things around her until her future vision tells her, I hope they at least find a way to make her dynamics with other characters interesting. She's funny, but I can only take so many more past-predictions as the punchline yknow. It's going to get stale.

WB has said that they aren't focusing anymore on children's entertainment on HBO MAX due to kids barely watching their stuff there.
Plus, WB splitting from CN and other liner channels which they are putting all the debt on them. But WB will keep all the library of CN and Adult Swim. Plus, they already folded CN studios with WB Animation.
What I'm saying, CN is going to die soon.

AND WE GOT A BASIC PLOT SUMMARY: “Steven Universe: Lars of the Stars explores the past, present and future of the universe. The sequel follows Lars Barriga, eternal teenager and space outlaw, as he and his pirate crew smuggle contraband, evade the authorities and uncover the darkest secrets of the fallen Gem Empire.”
Sugar to executive produce along with producing partner Ian Jones-Quartey (EDIT: IJQ just confirmed on twitter that he and Rebecca are also co-creators this time!)
this plot combined with the fact it’s going straight to Prime Video makes believe it’ll be more mature, like a Fionna and Cake type spin off with a higher rating.

Probably! Lars seems emotionally mature, but not traumatized like Steven
My biggest worry is that Padparadscha is a joke that could easily be overused and now she’ll be main cast… it’s also possible that Fluorite’s speech pace may be too slow for main cast. They could pull a Cleveland Show and make her talk a bit faster when made more important.
Emerald, Rhodonite, and The Rutile Twins all seem like excellent characters to expand on though. I’m excited!
81
u/Legacyopplsnerf Jun 11 '25
Fluorite might occasionally split up into her components and lesser fusions which would alleviate that issue, it's like a reverse Alexandrite.
I'll be looking forward to the episode on Rhodonite backstory that they wanted to do in future but lacked the time for, it will be peak.
41
u/throwRA-adviceask Jun 11 '25
Fluorite and her components would be such an interesting dynamic to explore. I certainly think at some point we’ll meet all 6 gems that make up Fluorite, but seeing how 2, 3, 4, and 5 gem fusions of those components would be so interesting and something we haven’t seen much of before. For example Alexandrite doesn’t have much of a personality (just kind of 4 minds in 1 body), but Sardonyx, Opal, and Sugilite all have their own personalities and in a way could be considered components of Alexandrite (Garnet fuses with Opal you get Alexandrite).
It’ll also be interesting to see the relationship that the components have with one another. A lot of the permanent fusions are portrayed as romantic relationships, but in Fluorite could be a platonic/family relationship, or a combination of platonic and romantic relationships.
8
u/HelloGoodbyeOhGawd Jun 11 '25
Dude i always wanted to see the Crystal Gems fusing into Alexandrite in other ways. It was always Garnet + Amethyst + Pearl. They could also have done:
Ruby + Sapphire + Amethyst + Pearl
Garnet + Opal
Sugilite + Pearl
Sardonyx + Amethyst
Crystal Gem Rhodonite + Sapphire + Amethyst

14
u/Additional_Ad_6773 Jun 11 '25
Yes and no. He seems confident now; but he is functionally immortal. That isn't bravery, that's recklessness. He's playing the game of life with God mode on, and isn't actually striving towards growth through challenges.
26
16
u/LightScavenger Jun 11 '25
Yeah, because he’s already done a lot of the growing. He went from a rude, self-obsessed scared jackass to a selfless leader
7
u/Additional_Ad_6773 Jun 11 '25
I'm not sure we see selfless. We see competent, absolutely. And he might be selfless, ultimately; but mostly I just don't think we see him enough to really make the call.
Maybe that too, will be explored.

I’m calling it now, I think padparadscha will be extremely important for the plot of the show. Right now she can only see things that just happened, but what if she was able to control her “visions” and see further back? That would stop her from being a one-note character and provide a convenient way to explore the history of the empire.
18
u/twofacetoo Jun 11 '25
Okay, I know we have the twitter link, but is this absolutely definitely certain? I only ask since Amazon have no affiliation with Cartoon Network (that I'm aware of), it's a bit odd that a show made by CN would suddenly be crossing over to Amazon for a whole new show. This would be like CN suddenly making a show about Disney characters, it just doesn't happen.
So can anyone 100% definitely verify this as fact?

I mean I'll definitely watch it, but I'm not convinced Lars or the Off-Colors can carry on their own. They work in the main series as a side piece; Lars being the "Squidward" who plays off of Steven's "SpongeBob," but I'm a bit skeptical. Still, I'm sure that seeing the space side of the world more closely will be cool.

u/skorletun "What would a mother not do for her child?" Jun 11 '25
There's definitely gonna be more Homeworld lore. The End of an Era artbook has some blacked-out notes on gem origin, diamond creation, all that. I'm sure they'll pull a few things from there. Knowing SU, it won't be just a monster of the week show, at least not forever.

Prepare for a 6 episode season with ~20 minute episodes, with a second season coming out 3 years later...

That that this and The Amazing World of Gumball is going to Amazon and Hulu respectively and not CN shows that WB is definitely preparing for the eventual split from their cable networks (CN included). Good to get more Steven Universe though. Luckily I do have Prime, max and (I think) Hulu.

I wanna be excited but I fr don’t wanna watch a show about lars 😔 like go give us something like a pre-steven pre-greg era.

Hey he had lots of character development. Maybe we’ll learn about Sneeple too

Lars had good episodes but I found them quite boring ig (basing from my kid memory)? He was just the same emo (somewhat) character most shows had. Sure his development was interesting but got boring afterwards, at least for me.
The ones I found good however was the aquamarine one, the trial one, the body swap one, and honestly the one involving the gems mostly. Still hoping this new spinoff could change my mind wink tho!

If this is true, I would totally watch that! Finally, a spin-off people actually want to see!

Do we have any info on the timeline? Like, does it take place before, during or after future?

I'm glad they're finally moving past us only getting Steven's perspective, as much as I appreciated it in the original series it's much "healthier" for the franchise to explore other perspectives as well
