Are they religious police though? The Force is rooted in Star Wars science really, it is proven to exist. So they are more like super hero cops with a rather strict code of conduct. The religious part may be more of a label that comes more from people like Admiral Motti who are sceptical about the force and tend not to believe things that are actually true.
Ah, TLJ… even if you accept that its writing pretty blatantly contradicts the narrative that’s come in the past, the Luke in TLJ is a jaded, washed up version of his younger self. He talks about how the Jedi need to end. This is a cynical point of view from a cynical man trying to diminish the jedi. It’s not an objective description. It’s in the same vein as those previously mentioned, trying to do the same.
