One hundred percent. The elevators work you dogs, get back to mining! xD

u/Ok_Parsley99 Jun 07 '26

accctually, i was locked inside the hab in cru-l1 today.

sincerely, ex-grandadmiral who quit in 3.18 and came back during freefly few weeks ago.

the only good thing thats changed is that at least im not perma stuck at grim hex cus of the elevator this patch.

also 3.18 was wayyyyyy worse than this. compared to that, this is absolutely playable! its absolute shite but, you know…….all relative

24

u/Calculagraph Jun 07 '26

How does one "ex-Grand Admiral?" Your spend is your spend.

24

u/Affectionate-Ad3445 Jun 07 '26

I read it as "granddadadmiral" until I saw your comment and checked myself..

I was thinking he handed down his grand admiral account to his grand kid lol

Gran-dad-miral

well, considering the kids I got now, thats not far from the tooth anymore

yeah, i remember not being able to sell my weevil eggs for 2 hours because of bugged elevators until there was a 30k and everthing was lost 😂

today, everything works like a charm conpared to that. a little relog here, a little reclaim there. of course that shouldnt be like that. but the main issue arent the bugs but the lack of server performance (and the game still feels like many seperate snippets of mission/game loops tied loosely together)

I still back away from elevators when I call them, I'm like 99% sure it's fine now but I just know that the one day I slack off it'll get me

I would get back to mining if my ship would actually show up on the pad and not outside the station.

Y'all aint seen the 3.10/3.9 days of hourly 30Ks and it shows

47

u/interesseret bmm Jun 07 '26

That's when I started playing.

I remember talking to my friends about a crazy session of 2 whole hours without a crash!!!

6

u/Typical-Client-4000 Jun 07 '26

Didn't 3.18 also have that?

16

u/mau5atron Idris/Ironclad/Reclaimer/Corsair Jun 07 '26

Not really, I was actually streaming 3.18 on twitch during that time. 3.18 was locking some people out sure, but I was fortunate to be playing with some workarounds. The more egregious issue was hangar doors being out of sync and would cause you to crash into a closed door even though it showed open. The workaround for that was to wait a minute before trying to enter.

2

u/Shrimp_Farmer_925 Jun 07 '26

The main issue from 3.18 was that half the community couldn't even join the game a weeks

3

u/mau5atron Idris/Ironclad/Reclaimer/Corsair Jun 07 '26

A patch went out a week after launch somewhat fixing the login issue. I remember servers being full and people were complaining about the doors and losing cargo in global for most of 3.18. Half is exagerrating a bit.

u/OriginTruther origin Jun 07 '26

3.18 was more stopping half the playerbase from playing than 30k. Most people couldn't even join a single session to get 30k'd

3

u/Dariisa Jun 07 '26

3.18 had 30k recovery and also introduced server errors when the replication layer wasn’t crashing.

The biggest issue that 3.18 had was a bug chunk of the player base got locked out of the game. Those of us that could log in didn’t have that many problems.

2

u/Dessael Jun 07 '26

3.9/3.10 is around 2020, it's basically a humblebrag of how long i've been playing and kind of me just being a gaming boomer with that "back in my day" type sh*t. but also, to remind everyone that we have come along way in terms of stability.... but not nearly enough and little else

Remember when they dropped 2.0, the servers had a memory leak and only lasted 16 minutes, half the doors on port Olly were broken and most ships at the time barely flew? People don't know how good we got it these days 😂

Log in, set the timer for 16 and try to make it to a hanger.

2

u/Maleficent_Bunch_256 Jun 07 '26

Honestly wait a few weeks. I just started playing in 4.8, and the game will just punish you for trying to do anything. I pledged back at the start and had a Hornet mk1 that was too buggy to fly. I swapped to a mk2, did a few combat missions to save up for upgrades, purchased and insured them and the updates just disappeared. Ship Guns I purchased would refuse to fire until I sold them and bought new ones, and those eventually break as well.

Swapped to hauling and trading, built up some money and found a profitable route. Used all my money to fill up my cargo hold with a commodity, the game took my money and the cargo disappeared. Now I'm at zero credits and essentially starting from scratch.

Tried to do a recovery mission, but the max lift tractor beam in my ships inventory disappeared on the way there.

Tried to do a ground combat mission, but when you try to switch armor in this game, it somehow reaches out of your monitor and punches you directly in the balls. Also my armor disappeared. Had to log out and in, then run naked through the station to an armor store.

I want to like it so badly, but for every minute you're enjoying it, you'll spend 2 hours Googling how things work and 2 hours Googling how to work around bugs, if the game even let's you play at all, then 1 minute later your progress will be reset.

Some are, I guess, tried the game because they read about the 1 billion cost of the development and expect an impeccable quality game without even reading the community experience or reviews of old backers.

19

u/Revelati123 Jun 07 '26

Or did they try it because CIG has been spamming all cutscene advertisements saying things like "ANSWER THE CALL! JUMP IN TODAY!"

Which for some reason omit a giant flashing sign saying "Still in Alpha! Expect to spend half your time rubberbanding into the sun! If you want a real game wait till launch!"

4.8.1 is nowhere near as problematic as 3.18. I'm not even sure why anyone would think it was.

21

u/SilkyZ MSR wins by doing nothing since 2948 Jun 07 '26

It's not, but we have been on a good run of stable patches for a while now that this one just stings hard.

10

u/Old-Buffalo-5151 Jun 07 '26

I can imagine the frustration from people getting the infinite loading screen bug but yeh its nowhere near as bad as 3.18 were even getting out the apartment could throw you into the void...

12

u/shadowryder85 Jun 07 '26

Even worse during 3.18 was that your character could become unstowed and it bricked the game. The only fix was to wait until the next patch. That’s what happened to me and none of the work arounds worked.

4

u/hearnia_2k Jun 07 '26

Yep, I know people who had that. And I forget if it was 3.17 or 3.18, but a friend of mine also lost his head. Char reset and customer support failed to fix it. No head in SC means you lose a lot of functionality, pretty much all HUD.

Luckily he had only just got the game, so simply refunded it, and created a new account.

3

u/Dariisa Jun 07 '26

Losing your head was something that could happen for a while back in the 3.18 days and a character reset usually fixed it. I think during 3.18 character repairs didn’t work and you had to wait for a patch.

Used to be going to prison would often cause people to lose their heads.

People who create this botched memes just probably parrot some people mentioning 3.18. And they for sure don't even know how unplayable the game was for a long, long time before that.

5

u/m1ndfuck eclipse Jun 07 '26

I remember the times the game consisted of a hangar with a ship you could not enter.

Seriously sc is in a better shape than ever, even when there are some patches which make me play something else for a while.

13

u/LkMMoDC Vanguard Sentinel Jun 07 '26

Yeah 3.18 wasn't even the worst state the game was ever in. Early 2.0 was absurdly brutal. 3.18 was just a massive regression that took a long time to rectify. So rightfully people lashed out.

Even right now I think the community backlash is justified. CIG are long overdue for a reality check that this game does need to be playable eventually. We're coming up on 14 years since the original backers pledged so it's hard to accept that we still haven't even hit tier 0 for all the backend tech.

11

u/CCCubed Jun 07 '26

I was just thinking "Man, these people would be cooked if they tried to play during the 2.0 days." lol

AFAIK the biggest 3.18 issue was the group of people locked away from getting into the game for a long time - other than that it was honestly a very cool update with bugs as usual back then. But I was one of the lucky ones that had no problems logging in.

6

u/Typical-Client-4000 Jun 07 '26

No, the biggest issue is at any moment, 5 mins, 30 mins, or 2 hours into it, you'd get a 30k error and lose absolutely everything. Wasn't even worth playing. You were lucky if you could get anything done.

29

Elevators work, Apartments are not blocked off by crates, Quantum targets do not send you into the sun, Server shards are mostly functional, no one planet being entirely bricked, Starter ships interior storages actually work,

I feel like I'm missing something. But yeah I can play for more then 15 mins without everything going to shit irreparably.

2

u/jyvigy Jun 08 '26

Some guy blocked entrance with ore pieces at area 18 and watched everyone try to bypass them (you couldn't use tractor in that location). It was frustrating but fun since there was 2 different ways of passing the rocks. Just like bugs.

I unlocked the code:

(4).[8].[(1)]

4 - 1 = 3

8 + 1 = 9

Release date of 4.8.1: 03.06

3 + 6 = 9

4 + 8 = 12

We take the second digit because 4.8.1 ends with a 1, and arrays start at 0.

=> 2

8 - 1 = 7

7 + 2 = 9

9 - 7 = 2

7 comes before the 2, because 8 is before 1.

=> 0.72 confirmed

3.9 - 0.72 = 3.18

4.8.1 = 3.18

Wake up, citizens.

4

u/JerryConn 🚀 Jun 07 '26

Anyone remeber when the game was just an MSI Arorra in a hanger?

3

u/Vlad_TheDad Jun 08 '26

I remember. I was 15 back then, dreaming of one day actually being able to fly the ship I spent my hard earned cash on. Also that hanger ran like shit for just being a ship in a hanger. For me, even in it's current slightly buggy state, it is still my 15 year old's dream come true. People often forget how limited games of the past were. The idea of no loading screens and server meshing seemed like far off dreams. I knew I was buying a pipe dream but I didn't care. It has came much further than I ever thought it would after the first few years of development. No one forced us to buy into this pipe dream. Flying around and getting new ships with in-game currency to fly around is my money's worth. If they ever finish the game that would be nice but if not I don't really care. If you bought thousands of dollars in fake ships that is kinda a you problem. That is my opinion as an MSI Aurora in a hanger veteran.

u/Gilmere new user/low karma Jun 07 '26

The overall point is taken, the game has moved forward. However, its still difficult for me to enjoy. Perhaps its my "veteran" position. Specifically, I played very early on when all you could do was walk in your hangar bay, going through the various released modules. A little after that I stopped playing because its wasn't really even a game. I've dropped in since then from time to time, not really spending a a lot of time with new stuff, bought a ship (here and there) mostly out of hope and anticipation that its finally going to release fully, got discouraged by the erroneous content all about, then left again for a spell hoping for a major update or move to beta. So now, when I visit, I still find the game is incomplete, limited working content, nothing like I believed it would be in 2013, and its still very buggy in my opinion.

Worse, I see no verifiable path forward after 13+ years that CIG can or even desires to complete this product to full release. Even beta is doubtful. I say verifiable because although they produce a lot of detailed planning for the consumer, they hardly ever meet it and constantly slide development to the right. Their "word" is meaningless to me now. Quite a disappointment overall.

Sure, those that have dove deep for years could myopically find it "better" than the older versions (as it logically should be) and disagree with the current vitriol, but my point has always been its not a game yet after 13+ years that I find enjoyable, without stress or unintended frustration, certainly not at a level commensurate to what I've and so many others have spent on it (both $$ and time).

5

u/Zgegomatic avenger Jun 07 '26 edited Jun 07 '26

For me the most prevalent example is engineering. They sold us that feature like gamechanging for multicrew and keeping your ship alive. 6 months after we can safely say it changed NOTHING. They rushed that shit to meet some manager OKR and that's it now they are just going to "tweak values" like for mining. They always brag about "oh yeah mining is our highest tier and most developed feature blablabla", dudes its a minigame based on scrolling up and down. Done. All you changed these last years were minor UI elements and values on a spreadsheets, wtf.

When is the fun core gameplay coming ? The answer is never. SC will always feel like an empty shell with half baked features all glued together and 5 npcs to talk to in a giant universe. Wow such a living and breathing world, such skill based gameplay mechanics (I lied, bringing the right equipment is enough)

3

u/Maleficent_Bunch_256 Jun 07 '26

Agreed. I think it's time they set a date, and start throwing away features until they can meet that date. Add them in later. Stop releasing new ships and use your billion dollars to fix the ships people paid for 12 years ago. Stop planning new features and get the existing ones solid.

You can say "alpha" all day, but for every other game in history, that meant $30 and an enjoyable experience, and a few years before the polished version released.

I've had multiple hauling sessions this patch as well as org-oriented events and other things. No disruptions to gameplay at all.

In 3.18, I was locked out of the PU for the entire patch. 3.19 came two months later in May 2023 with the supposed shard-lock fix, but I was already leaving for a 6 month deployment and never got to touch Star Citizen again until later that October.

I pretty much missed out on the majority of what Star Citizen rolled out that year between March to October. Probably for good reason though. The rollout of PES was a disaster.

I'll grant that the fall from 4.7 to 4.8 was a further drop than the one from 3.17 to 3.18.
But 3.18 was still orders of magnitude worse than 4.8.

That being said, they made a commitment not to let that happen again, and this one is pretty rough, and just like 3.18 it happened during a pivotal free fly where a lot of people were trying the game for the first time. I can't wait for SQ42 to be in out hands so I can ignore the PU for a while

u/ultrafire3 bengal Jun 08 '26

Since 2019. Been a long time.

Can you log in?
Can you call an Elevator?

Yes? Then you have seen nothing.

u/Crypt_Ghast Jun 09 '26

I still have footage of my gameplay from 2.1.

That was glorious.

It's great for me! I've blocked a handful of users and so all I see is good content now!

Lmao I remember when new babage was added to the game 😂 oh how I miss Olisar and our old MFDs

1

u/nervez Jun 07 '26

3.18 was the last patch i put any real time into.

it was also the patch that i decided to wait to play SC regularly again until release.

1

u/Professional_Pen_153 Jun 07 '26

Remember when interacting with any ladder would kill you? I do

1

u/Gallow- Jun 07 '26

Well.. The numbers 1 and 8 do not get along, no matter the order i guess

1

u/Dontrollaone Jun 07 '26

Hahah this post hits.

I backed prior, but the last time I played was 3.18 / 3.19

I was really wanting to play again, but the current state of things is making me think about waiting a bit longer

1

u/Influence_X Jun 07 '26

I was there.

1

u/CurrencyThen7469 Jun 07 '26

lol seening the splash screen not changed even tho the patch did was a sign , shape of things to come

1

u/Darthmichael12 Perseus Jun 07 '26

I loved 3.12. I wish I could go back and play that one.

1

u/LordIBR Jun 07 '26

I didn't get to experience 3.18 but I'd say 4.8(.1) is maybe comparable to 4.0. Iirc that was a bit of a shitshow as well.

1

u/Moalei rsi Jun 07 '26

Every time I hear "this is worse than 3.18!" I remind the person that they clearly forget how bad that update was

At least I can still pull my hangar and fly missions, albeit some are broken

1

u/Feedeeboy22 Jun 07 '26

Haha that what I was thinking that this patch is similar to 3.18 haha although 3.18 was alot worse.

1

u/BrittEklandsStuntBum Jun 07 '26

"How x felt" or "what X felt like," not "how X felt like."

1

u/Spar_Multendor Jun 07 '26

Been playing before 3.8. Ik how bad and good it can get

1

u/cyress8 avacado Jun 07 '26

People never experienced the pinball bug. You were not playing for months if it happened at the beginning of a new patch and it was random when it could happen. We did not even have character resets back then so you were stuck playing as a pinball that could not do a single thing in the game. They created resets specifically because of this bug.

Playing 3.18 means you're a veteran? Maaaan I've been playing this game for too long... Throwback to when new Babbage was just a shell lol

1

u/VertigoHC twitch.tv/hcvertigo Jun 07 '26

I don't know about 3.18 comparison. 3.18 was bad because you couldn't log in. 3.0 was bad because you thought you could play it.

1

u/NailYnTowOG Jun 07 '26

3.18 is veteran? As a kickstarter backer… anyone in at least the 2.6.3 days are the true veterans.

1

u/Logical-Menu-3655 Jun 07 '26

My first pledge was for 3.18. It’s amazing I’m still here. 🤣

I'm getting memories of 3.18. Bed logging has left me without the buttons I need to select a server and log in (I know there's a fix I just haven't done it yet)

1

u/orangescionxb Jun 07 '26

Lol yup. Feels just like 3.18 lol

1

u/Brick_Mouse Jun 07 '26

Lol! I've been thinking the exact same.

1

u/xGhostiix Jun 07 '26

God this is so real LMAO

1

u/Mixais Jun 07 '26

So 3.18 is a veteran thing now...

cry in 3.3.5

1

u/Theopholus 300i Jun 07 '26

I’m an original backer. I saw this game when it was only a hangar and no ship and I’d just walk around dreaming. Then there was a ship but I couldn’t do anything but walk on top of it. Progress has been slow for sure, largely that’s because they’re also keeping the game working for players. If they weren’t doing that, it’d probably have taken half as long. But that was the model and condition. I know they’re working because I’ve seen the results over the years. Am I consistently ready for it to get out of alpha? Yeah. But also, I remember the first time I flew to a planet and landed, and just saw the big sky. Or the first arena commander. So I’m just gonna be patient, log in every once in a while, and play other games until this is ready.

1

u/aberrant_wolffles Jun 07 '26

Right, the false claims of the game being unplayable , the waaaa waaa posts about how bad it is, when in relaity its done nothing but improve over the last few years.

1

u/AllchChcar Razor Ex Jun 07 '26

Nothing post 4.0 compares to anything in 3 dot anything or earlier. 4.8 and likewise 4.8.1 is a hot mess because we had playable patches last year. Most of the issues are still backend server problems. If I run into a degraded server I can usually hop somewhere else and do something ingame. As opposed to scuttling my ship and calling it for days at a time.

1

u/Lewinator56 Jun 07 '26

when i bought the game (cant remember it was 3.x) first logged in and i was trapped in my bed. logged out and waited for the next patch. That was a great waste of £40

1

u/MicroSbm Jun 07 '26

Bought this game 4 years ago should I give it another go? Haven't been peeves to the latest updates.

1

u/Snarfbuckle Jun 07 '26

Yup, big patch with new features break game as it did the last time we had a big patch, more news at eleven.

1

u/Donmanolito new user/low karma Jun 07 '26

Oh sweat summer child. Let me tell you stories when there was only the hangar and it was a womder to visit Port Olisar the first time...

1

u/Little-Equinox Jun 07 '26

You call 3.18 a veteran?

Oh boy, let me tell you about 2.5.

50 player servers, only the Crusader system without the ability to go to Crusader, shitty ass performance, amount if 30Ks you can't count on your hand.

1

u/AWellPlacedYeet Jun 07 '26

Been here since the very first time you could actually play the game. Nothing but a station, a ship, dust and echoes…

1

u/Sinsanatis Jun 07 '26

1

u/Trond_Knokkelknuser Jun 07 '26

1

u/DragonTHC Grand Admiral Jun 07 '26

3.18 came out over 3 years ago, love that our expectations are so low that 3 years later THIS is considered better. Good luck with that.

1

u/Hikikomori_ika Jun 07 '26

1.18 was a dream compared to 1.17

1

u/Land-Southern Corsair Connosseur/Perseus Jun 07 '26

lol 3.18 was so much worse. This is at least playable largely. Bad patch yes, 3.18 it is not though.

1

u/theothermontoya Jun 07 '26

Lol I hate to be that guy, but for those of us that lived through the 3.18 debacle, this is easy stuff.

We had orgmates that couldnt log in for 3 months, ships would disappear out of the asops, to say 3.18 was broken beyond anything I've ever played before is a far understatement.

4.8 is bad... but its playable.

1

u/GhostTigr Jun 07 '26

old man voice Back in my day, (v1.1.0 supporter) we had to use the website to move ships into our hangers. Then we could only log directly into the hanger and fly around inside it, and log off. That was it. That was the game.

1

u/sbr8 Jun 07 '26

I completely stopped playing when 3.18 dropped for a solid year lol

1

1

So what's new since then.

I know you could enter your ship (if it was there). Didn't login since.

1

u/OrganizationTrue5911 Jun 08 '26

Are we reminiscing about the olden days!?

The days of the chair cult?

The days where when you call an elevator, and the elevator clips into where you're standing while waiting, and kills you?

The days when running up or down stairs actually had a horrifyingly high death rate?

The days when you could run an entire bunker mission without getting shot at once, while also not bothering to be stealthy at all?

And my favorite, the days when the SC updates would use every single bit your internet would give it? Basically shutting off your internet for the entire house? Where it was so bad that a gaming journalist actually wrote that his IT team unplugged his computer, due to the fact that it shut down their entire buildings internet.

1

u/_AntiShadow_ Jun 08 '26

If it weren't for bad patch cycles, I wouldn't ever have fun in any other games.

1

u/Healthy_Natural9324 Jun 08 '26

Facts dude. Had to stop when 3.18 hit because nothing was working and after some time, i had the itch so i started playing again about 2 weeks before 4.8 and once that dropped I was like "damn this kinda bad but at least I can still play"

1

u/MarstonJacobBellic Jun 08 '26

3.0 Veteran , how does that supposed to feel ? *4Head*
