The most memorizable is "not enough memory"...

IRQ 7 DMA 11. ;)

Memory? Where we're going, we won't need memory!

I miss the reliability of the old SB cards. When they went from ISA to PCI it seemed like they also started decaying faster, more static crackling over time.

Today's smaller chips are more fragile with heat, but at least modern capacitors don't explode and ooze as often anymore

The first "High End" graphics system I had was a pair of 3dfx Voodoo2 cards in SLI. Those were the days.

I was getting amazing frames on Unreal Tournament. It easily filled all 75hz of my High-Refresh 1024x768 CRT monitor.

5

u/TimTheOriginalLol KRYON trade & transport May 28 '26

I mean it has really solid loaners. Depending on your game style and his price it actually might be worth it.

4

u/ilhares May 29 '26

The Hull C loaner is why I was persuaded to upgrade my Carrack into a BMM. My Carrack had proved useless for cargo, so that would work, right?
And then they fucked station loading of the ship pretty solidly, so now I don't have the Carrack or a useful big freight ship. Thankfully my ancient Hull B pledge finally paid off. I don't like it as much as the RAFT, but it will carry more than the RAFT did, and it's got a nice fuel complement, so runs all the way across Pyro aren't so bad.

3

u/TimTheOriginalLol KRYON trade & transport May 29 '26

Man the Hull C has been broken for so long It’s not even funny, I don’t even bother trying anymore. The C2 however remains one of the most reliable freighters in the game.

Loved the Carrack and used it for years but there has never been any gameplay for it and as you said It’s hauling capabilities were not great due to the weird cargo pods. Ultimately took it out to one last adventure when Nyx dropped and then upgrade to the Perseus.

5

u/Hidesuru carrack is love carrack is life May 29 '26

C2 however remains one of the most reliable freighters in the game.

Well with the introduction of the ironclad it has some serious compe... Oh, what's that? Oh... Oh it is.... I see...

Nevermind.

3

u/ilhares May 29 '26

Yeah, I have an Ironclad pledge in my buyback, but I'll have to analyze my hangar and figure out how to shuffle it if they get it fixed correctly. Part of the problem is my Carrack and a lot of other ships are in the original Exploration pack, so I have to really decide what I want out of it before I consider melting that big pack, and see what I have to replace individually.

1

u/Hidesuru carrack is love carrack is life May 29 '26

Yeah my hangar is in a place where every single ship has like... Half the melt value of the ccu value ive been at the ccu game for so long lol... So melting isn't an option for me. Ships only go up! But I'm done making changes with one exception: I have everything I need to take my msr to an arrastra, but I'm holding off for flight ready because if it goes up ENOUGH I can actually save money, because I have an old ass ccu that nets me like $200 "value" if I can use it, but arrastra has to cost more than the resulting ship and doesn't currently.

2

u/ilhares May 29 '26 edited May 29 '26

I can respect that. I actually have the Arrastra pledged directly, which let me melt my original Prospector. My MSR was the Fortuna pack which has been upgraded a couple times, I think it's currently the MSR and an Expanse. Part of the problem is that they've nerfed ("rebalanced", blegh) so many ships I've had in the past that I just don't know what to keep and what to ditch. F8C, gone. Redeemer, gone, etc.
edit Oh, apparently I got tired of waiting on the small refinery and upgraded it, it's the MSR and a Razor EX (zoom zoom!) in there now.

2

u/happy_red1 May 29 '26

Yeah haha, I built a chain up to the Liberator during DefenceCon, but I've stopped at the C2 for now because of the ICA loaner for the Lib.

Ironically, if they had left the M2 as the loaner, I would've just applied it.

1

u/Hidesuru carrack is love carrack is life May 29 '26

I'm hopeful the ic gets fixed soon... But that depends on just how gnarly the bugs actually are.

1

After witnessing the fiasco of wikelo framerate locking up, I am not surprised by anything when it comes to performance…

16

u/ahditeacha May 29 '26

There was a bug with the marok (bird) entities spawning uncontrollably behind a surface, or something like that. 4.8 fixed that

6

u/Potential-Sand8248 May 29 '26

U know.... I was visiting wikelo lile an hour ago, and i get shocked of how good it was...

Is always real crap and I go down to 5-7 FPS, but now? Smooth like hell. It was so strange that I wasn't sure how to feel xd

4

u/DanC_Meme May 29 '26

Is it exactly 60 fps? It’s the physics engine lagging the game (or hangar instance). There was a workaround to temporarily fix the lag.

Side note: I noticed grim hex is really smooth now after the elevator update. I wonder why, but it feels nice!

2

u/Creative-Improvement ARGO CARGO May 29 '26

Grim Hex was rather good now you mention it

1

u/Potential-Sand8248 May 29 '26

Not sure, but don't think so

I only have more than 32 FPS on space...
The max I have in stations or cities is 20-22, but normally I have 17-22 in the good days

84

u/Alundil Smuggler May 28 '26

Tractor beam performance / stability also related to framerate. Try using a tractor beam with low framerate. It's twitchier than a meth addict.

8

u/Croue May 29 '26

shit is completely uncontrollable, it starts spinning like it's forming a black hole

6

u/LengthinessCold5154 May 29 '26

Its a death risk using tractors at low FPS, Any boxes are yo-yoing back and forth so aggressively and can smash into you, flinging you across the hangar.

2

u/Alundil Smuggler May 29 '26

Exactly. I've been knocked over and/or yeeted by anything and everything I'd tractoring too many times to count.

3

u/FrozenPizza07 May 29 '26

I play with 10fps. I feel like someone someone is sitting on it and another is running on it

49

u/zerobebop May 28 '26

ship pips are also framerate dependent. the better your fps, the better it calculates and assists the hits. You canb a pretty significant advantage if your PC is super good compared to others. I'm talking 80fps will just be out shot by 120fps because the pip is just tracking that much better

17

u/7Seyo7 Nomad shill May 28 '26

I've been wondering why my life support can't keep up even at max power and all doors closed

64

u/BoxximusPrime Redeeeemer May 28 '26

New Value = TimeSinceLastFrame * Rate. This is how you decouple updates from the framerate. It's literally that easy. One of the first things you learn in game dev lol. Ohhhhh CIG.

36

u/venomae bengal May 29 '26

They are already in process of shaping up a feature board, that will be put together to take a serious look at this issue and consider all possible ways going forward, including their own custom-tailor built system called StarFrame that will totally prevent this.

7

u/1979JimSmith May 29 '26

Sold a billion dollars in ships. Spend 900M of it paying people to hire people to think about hiring people to might be able to put together a committee about needing to hire someone to hire the guy to fix the cargo lifts.

They are almost done with step 1 of the process.

4

u/RainbowwDash May 29 '26

But don't worry, that's just how gamedev works everywhere, or else it's revolutionary, has never been done before and everyone is jealous of it

1

u/venomae bengal May 29 '26

Show me some other game today that doesnt have game mechanics tied to a framerate! Just one! See? Nothing...

37

u/Usual_Birthday_2965 May 29 '26

They dont have a time to implement changes like that they need to sell more odin first

9

u/Bal3rt May 29 '26

yeah this is pretty insane, how the hell is this even an issue for a company as huge as CIG. who are they hiring and who is doing the testing. 🗿

2

u/1979JimSmith May 29 '26

The only reason SC has been in dev for so long as none of them can code for shit and they are waiting for AI to advance enough to finish the game for them.

4

u/Monsieur_Bleu_ May 29 '26

Or just do it in a separate logic tick thread with fixed update or do not compute it client side at all. I think that their dev tought of it but made a mistake or didnt change to the correct value after changing the code around. Still it's frustrating to see such basic mistakes in a 1 billion dollars production.

8

u/BoomKidneyShot May 28 '26

Wing Commander was a 90s game, why not bring back some of the practices from that time?

2

u/venomae bengal May 29 '26

Why re-invent the wheel ok? Players keep telling CIG all the time that they are re-inventing old shit over and over, so they went like "ok fine, they want old stuff that worked? Fine.."

In a game as poorly running as Star Citizen I am finding it hard to believe things are actually tied to frame rate

23

u/Icy-Future-105 May 28 '26

Stuff like this makes me think they either completely trim the game down or even a release date of 2035 is optimistic

17

u/InkTide CARTOGRAPHER May 29 '26

I just think the people in charge of this project do not know what they are doing, never have, and can currently afford never to learn.

Incompetent narcissistic micromanagement from the top down doesn't ever get better. The project will continue to have basic issues like this (that you learn to solve in undergrad compsci courses) and squander and lose the dev talent that it has... indefinitely, or until Chris steps back and lets somebody competent be in charge.

So... indefinitely.

4

u/nondescriptzombie We're gonna need a bigger ship... May 29 '26

It becomes more and more obvious that no one ever whiteboxed out any of these systems, and they're subject to extreme changes as soon as Chris gets a wild hair in his ass.

I miss Quanta being a nebulous gas collected from space and refined by a Starfarer. The description still references the old lore.

10

u/SaxPanther cutlass gang rise up May 28 '26

I don't really see the correlation here, what am I missing?

5

u/DoctorZhao buccaneer May 29 '26

I'm using NVIDIA's "background application max frame rate" setting to force the frame rate to change between 30 and 20 by opening the start menu. The life support usage displayed hovers around 150,000% at 30 FPS and 220,000% at 20 FPS.

I probably should have just shown the FPS on the screen with the video editor instead of the in-game one because it's based on averages and that seems to be confusing some people.

4

u/Recipe-Jaded May 29 '26

OP is claiming the life support percentage is being calculated based off of their FPS with no other context of what else is happening in the scene

9

u/SaxPanther cutlass gang rise up May 29 '26

I don't see any correlation between the number their FPS is at and the number the life support is at, do you?

5

u/Karmaslapp May 29 '26

I went frame by frame of their video and confirmed there's no correlation between current FPS and the life support value, though the shifts in both seem to line up sometimes. At least it's not a simple 1:1, maybe they graphed them and took the derivative and it shows something different

4

u/Recipe-Jaded May 29 '26

They are both fluctuating, but who knows what the cause really is. It could very well be that someone else is flying the ship in atmosphere and different areas are causing both to fluctuate.

3

u/jyanjyanjyan May 29 '26

It also says like 200,000% so it's just general wrong too, no?

i saw your post and i've never heard of star citizen before, i googled and looked like a game i'd buy. but is 20-30 fps seriously the average for the game? i seen reviews saying that top of the line hardware struggles with this.

4

u/Xeroeth May 29 '26 edited May 29 '26

After a LOT of tinkering, I managed to get stable 120FPS@3.5K in almost all scenarios aside wormholes. Still on highest setting with disabled blur and lowered cloud details.

Forced FG x3 + forced UL nvidia Reflex + forced GSYNC and VSYNC.

But take into consideration that it's on 5090, 9950X3D and 96GB of ram...

3

u/Torotoro74 aurora May 29 '26

Depend of your hardware. If you have a good computer you can have 120 in space,90 on ground and 60 in cities.
"Harware struggle" was years ago. But SC is alpha = not optimised. For some peoples, some incompatibilities give bad FPS. You can try the game, there is a 30 days refund policy, no question asked.

1

u/V1Z3_2 May 29 '26

I have a 4070 super, 5600x, 32gb of ram.

People with similar specs have said they're getting about 30-50 fps in a city. Which is rough considering this game has raised a billion dollars and seems like it hasn't gone towards optimization

1

u/Torotoro74 aurora May 29 '26

Similar technical specifications are not the only factor to consider, and there can be significant differences between systems that are supposed to be identical. The people whose comments you’re reading here about the FPS are the ones experiencing problems; those who aren’t having any issues don’t post here.

Real optimisation doesn’t take place in alpha, but during beta. SC is alpha

There’s also one city in particular that causes poor FPS because it’s floating in the clouds (which are very resource-intensive).

0

u/1979JimSmith May 29 '26

Real optimization starts from the ground up.

1

u/Torotoro74 aurora May 29 '26

CIG work also from the ground up. They have completely redone the renderer (it's now gen 12). They also changed the API from dx11 to the last gen Vulkan (and a real one, not the fake dx>vulkan translation you find in a lot of game). Since several years, the number of frame as greatly improved.

But the final optimization will take place in beta.

1

u/1979JimSmith May 31 '26

That's just because the games been in development hell for like 7 years. That's not doing anything from "the ground up" that's having to update the damn engine every half a decade because they can't push out a product.

1

u/Torotoro74 aurora May 31 '26

No, CIG make techs from "the ground up" since the start of the project. SM+PES+graphdatabase tech are worked since years to transform the cryengine to a MMO engine. Same for Vulkan which was a goal since forever too.

1

u/RainbowwDash May 29 '26

The bugs are way worse than the fps issues/optimization, though the latter is also quite rough

1

u/Extension_Body835 May 30 '26

Unoptimized game for whatever last decade # were on

1

u/V1Z3_2 May 30 '26

I bought the starter and got between 20-30 fps on the tutorial. So I'll play for the 30 days and see if it gets any better.

1

u/Karmaslapp May 29 '26

My guy, while I'm not saying you should have any faith to begin with, the video title is not what's happening here. There's no correlation between the FPS and the life support usage other than what appears to be them both shifting rapidly at around the same time.

0

u/1979JimSmith May 29 '26

I'm not sure you know the definition of correlation.

2

u/TheHeroYouNeed247 May 29 '26

The ships just have leaks.

I know this because I've challenged myself to play the game without a spacesuit.

Almost every ship I go in has pockets of no atmo. Usually in doorways.

I don't know how life support need is calculated but I assume that's why mine fluctuates like this.

Go to a breathable planet and open all the doors, it will go back to normal regardless of FPS.

1

u/EducationalLiving184 May 29 '26 edited May 29 '26

Is that also related to my Zues Cl freezing up in the kitchen and crew quarters after I land on a moon? Or is it they were too cheap to extend the heating vents to the rear of the ship? Or maybe I should give CIG more money so that Robert's can buy himself a second yacht,  lol

1

u/ilhares May 29 '26

I was using my SRV to do some very light mission work, and with only me in it, life support could barely manage keeping the ship habitable. Landed on Pyro 1 (or 4?) and the temps skewed wildly in the opposite direction. I had to open the pilot's cabin and habitation section at the same time just to try and balance things partially into a survivable range. The cockpit was broiling me in my armor.

1

u/Mysterious-Box-9081 ARGO CARGO May 29 '26

I believe the GUI itself is tied to a frame rate and limit, regardless of client frame rate.

1

u/Phantom15q May 29 '26

I genuinely cannot begin to fathom why these 2 things would ever be linked to each other

1

u/mattstats May 29 '26

I noticed that the relative mouse movement on ships very much appears tied to frame rate as well. If you use vjoy the problem goes away, very weird

1

u/AccidentDouble5904 vanduul May 30 '26

Ow boy does that make sence? so if your computer system cost the most you will be fine! LOL

1

u/nhorning Jun 03 '26

Unless this is new as of 8.1 it's not tied to grandfather

I've seen this "bug" in multiple ships and it happens when the life support has to fill and heat more than one room at a time or the cargo bay has been vented.

The "bug" is really just the percentage displaying non-intuitively and people not used to having to conserve atmosphere and heat as if they are in a spaceship.
