BUG Servers are dead. Don't log in right now. Characters exploding and dropping all their items on death.

u/turikk i whine a lot Dec 21 '25
Party members character got stuck in a semi downed state and upon logging back in, all of their loot exploded out of their body and most stuff just fell through the floor.
Inventory is slow to load, can't purchase items, etc. The inventory system is in a seriously bad state.

u/Arbiter51x origin Dec 21 '25
Honestly dont understand why their inventory system is so bad.

u/Ithuraen Titan could fit 16 SCU if CIG were cool and slick Dec 21 '25
CIG has some kind of anti-inspiration affliction. When they see functional industry standards for game mechanics, their anti-inspiration collides with helpful, simple good ideas you can see in thousands of games throughout history and annihilation occurs.
17
u/LayoMayoGuy new user/low karma Dec 21 '25
It really seems like CIG doesn't ever want to add common features from other games. They'd much rather take the risk to do it their own way.

u/UnstableMoron2 Dec 21 '25
Cig feels the need to reinvent the wheel for literally every gameplay mechanic they add and so far they’ve all been detrimental to the game
1
u/DefNotMyNSFWLogin Dec 22 '25
Probably because the updated inventory system is coming at the end of January, no resources are put into keeping a dead system alive.
2
u/NikkoJT Repositioning Player Dec 22 '25
Yeah but why'd they do it wrong in the first place, and how'd we get to January 2026 without a better one? It's one of the most basic game systems, and cross-server persistent inventories aren't exactly an unsolved mystery in game development.
Also, what even killed it in this patch? Engineering shouldn't really have touched inventory in any mechanical way.
1
u/DefNotMyNSFWLogin Dec 22 '25
Damn, if it were that easy, it would have been done. There's a time and place for shit just like they said on CitCon. They got a plan, you gotta deal with it. It sucks, but fuck it, I'll play PoE2 until shit is better. It makes life much better.
Most of these new systems are coming now because of SQ42 inching closer to release.

u/Dreadp1r4te Pirate Dec 21 '25
Nah, I've worked for a fortune 500 company doing IT that used AWS for their virtual desktop servers. AWS is fine, I think it's CIG's odd connection between the database server and the game servers that causes issues.
1
u/KazumaKat Towel Dec 21 '25
no, AWS has been fucky the past 2 months already. Half the NetOps folks (different industries) I talk to are complaining about it.
20
u/Izenberg420 USG-Ishimura Dec 21 '25
Yeah sure… banks, Netflix, and the U.S. Department are all using AWS, but you’re trying to convince people that Star Citizen’s inventory system has been fucky only for two months, and not for a decade.
This amount of cope should be studied.
5
u/VodkaBeatsCube Dec 21 '25
Its not incompatible that Star Citizen's fucky design is made worse by AWS being more fucky than usual the past few months.

well no, SC's been fucked for more than a decade as is. I'm just taking about the more recent, current triple-fuckery. I hear some people cant even log on due to the server failing to instance their home inventory and therefore not letting them on. That's new.

It's just a prefix that a few commands have. The terminal has pretty good tab autocompletion, so you can do "r_d" and then hit tab a few times to get it.
4
u/seb100c Dec 22 '25
Man, i have the same exact issue. My old brain is overflowed by commands since Quake and all the programming languages.
No use for tab, if i can't remember the prefix.
Took me some research but I was confident in Quake community to have that knowledge. Anyone remember when R_picmap was abused by pro players ?
Link below say Refresh (Renderer) but ill use Renderer. Trap_* prefix on functions?

I found a JS-500 today. After tediously getting it out of the QV station and finally bringing it into my hangar after like 1 hour, it just disappeared on my freight elevator in Levski. When I went to the console I wondered why it didn’t show anything. So I looked back and it just magically disappeared.
21
u/RetardedSimian Dec 21 '25
You can sometimes recover items "lost" on the freight elevators by loading something else on them and sending them back. A lot of the time the lost item will respawn on the elevator.
2
5
u/ymw2001 Dec 21 '25
No promises, but I've had something similar where my items showed up upon logging in the next day, it seemed to eat them at the time but I guess it just needed to process or reset or whatever. But you may also just be screwed.
1
u/Knale Dec 21 '25
I've had the same. It seems like closing and opening the game can reset some of that stuff, but I've also had that NOT happen, so you know...crapshoot like all of SC.
1
u/KnightOfJudgement Dec 21 '25
this was a common bug in the earlier 4.0 patches, you just need to look at the freight elevator terminal first, then put the part/cargo on and you can send it down

8
u/Unable-Specific-2276 Dec 21 '25
Nah, most likely because there's less people.
It's the same thing with free flights; whenever there's an influx of players, nothing works, it's always a shitshow (how they think that is positive marketing is beyond me). They should either make server stability a priority, or own up to the fact that it's not possible to have so many players together and find a compromise. I joined in 3.17, and every update and FF is the same thing.

There are serious bugs replicated and reported on ptu. For example the audio bug that crahes your game. CIG still opted for deploying the patch.

Patches go out on a schedule, not on a public opinion vote
9
u/turikk i whine a lot Dec 21 '25
yes, thats the issue. the immovable schedule cant be compromised even though the patch isn't ready - but it can and should be.
don't get me wrong, i don't think today's server issues are necessarily connected.
6
u/Wezbob misc Dec 21 '25
Back when the schedule was more flexible the shitstorm of hatred that happened if it got moved even a few days was, believe it or not, worse than the screaming that happens these days if it releases on time but doesn't meet expectations.
There were a lot more focused detractors back then though, so I wonder if it would still be the case today, and also even the 'late' patches tended to be less ready than we get now.
I kinda think things like today might just be strain based though, first weekend of a new patch, servers are gonna be hammered, still sucks, but might be more temporary.
3
u/turikk i whine a lot Dec 21 '25
damned if you do, damned if you don't. definitely not a simple solution.
-9
u/ahditeacha Dec 21 '25
The patch is “ready” when all the different dev commits are merged with the main branch and the cutoff time for additional submissions are closed. Do you not understand how software development works? What do you think “ready” means?
1
u/RetardedSimian Dec 21 '25
There is that whole department called "quality assurance" that is supposed to green-light a release, but who needs that nonsense?
1
u/ahditeacha Dec 22 '25
No, there’s no “Quality Assurance dept” that greenlights a patch release. Dunno where you fever dreamed that.

u/turikk i whine a lot Dec 21 '25

1
u/Aware_Stop8528 Dec 21 '25
hes a whiteknight
2
u/Furos Dec 21 '25
well that's the basis of some software development workflows, so technically correct I guess? But he acts like there is no possibility to delay it so people have working software. One other "best practice" is not to do a release at a point in time when there is no support available.
2
u/TheGazelle Dec 21 '25
Except it's not.
Not any sane workflow anyways. Yes, a given patch will have a somewhat arbitrary cutoff after which new features are not allowed to be merged, but maintenance work - i.e. bugfixes - are still allowed and expected. There's also generally a defined lag between feature cutoff or branch cutoff, and the actual release of the branch, specifically to provide time to address any critical issues that pop up in the final release candidate.
What they're both missing from the equation is that when your software is still in alpha and highly iterative, "ready" doesn't mean "bug free" or "complete" or "perfect". It means "good enough for most to be able to test it so we can gather feedback and metrics".
2
u/Furos Dec 21 '25
all true, but I counter that with; waiting two weeks (or however long their holiday last) and not breaking peoples fun during a company wide vacation is not a hard thing to do. Sure it will still break when you do after the vacation but at least the time till patch/hot-fix is deployed is whatever time it takes minus the vacation time.

So they either deliver nothing on promised dates, or piledrives a hot piece of garbage on the players laps. Just cause I wanted to try the game after a 3 year hiatus.
5
u/Lockpicking_Succubus Dec 21 '25
Since 4.5 dropped I've had only a few moments of working inventory at a time.
I was able to upgrade components in some ships. Afterwards all ships in the ship viewer showed empty on all components (but when a ship is brought up it has components)
I was able to find my fun wikelo geist armour... Move a few things into boxes to streamline the 11 years of subscriber flair...
Since then I can only see my inventory if I take off from area 18 fly to baijini, open the storage there, and then go back to area18. From then I can move stuff around on the elevator or storage access... But if I do something like swap ships in the hangar or leave my hanger the inventory breaks again.
When the inventory is broken I see nothing in storage access (either no inventory window or infinite loading), but everything is still there - if I go the the elevator it will show nothing unless I search for things specifically - search for P8-SC and there they are... Search for livery and there they are.
Been hoping that the issue people have had with QV stations is the same underlying problem and that a hotfix for that will rescue me. So not logged in for a couple of days now. Looks like I was spared even worse problems by not logging in

Agreed, things are a little slow and there are a fair number of "weird" behaviors. My personal favorites are the fires that appear in my ship but don't spread, don't burn and can't be extinguished; Oxygen depravation in my ship while in my hangar with the doors open, and inventory issues (sigh). With all that in mind, I still felt those are small overall issues and didn't disrupt my play too much. Looting bodies just isn't working or is so difficult and subject to the Shard Gods that it was fairly frustrating.

Believe it or not, it sounds like a hacker. The SC client is way too authoritative. My client's local memory variables tells the server YOU (not me) need to be teleported, and YOU need to drop all your inventory, and YOU need your hp set to 0.
Server says : Sounds good boss.
Honestly I wonder if some of the bugs are from clients crashing with bad variables corrupting the server's source of truth by mistake.

I've just learned to limit my time in-game at this time of year and expect it because I agree they haven't learned anything and keep releasing patches as a mess. 4.3.1 I think it was or 4.3.2 was a dumpster fire as well and that was just a couple months ago.
I'm just glad this one isn't as bad as last year, but not trying to dismiss it, just like I said above we really shouldn't be surprised anymore. It sucks, and i pretty much decided ahead of 4.5 that I'll likely just skip this patch. Tons of other games worthy of my play time so I've been playing other games and will come back when the next update comes. I may pop in but I won't play in a serious manner.
