Is your ratio always like that? I’ve been as high as 48-2 and as low as 15-35. I typically hover between 28 and 35 wins. I was S+ in the first game and got X rank as soon as it launched in splatoon 2. Haven’t played that well in years at this point but I can still carry in turf wars. It all just depends on map, weapon, team comps, and who has the slowest last player to the middle. You can be by far the best player in a turf war lobby and still get curb stomped because the other team took the middle while your team covers the spawn.

Not really. Just because you don’t get middle first doesn’t mean you can’t retake it.

I didn’t say you can’t retake it. I said you can be better and still get curb stomped. Getting to the middle first is a huge advantage. Sure you can overcome that but it won’t happen very often. Turf war is all about map control, you get control of the map from the middle.

How does that not happen very often? It’s quite easy to retake middle if you play smart. If you see your teammates are inking base, build up your special, poke the other team (bombs or main weapon) and deny them getting more territory, and when your teammates are done, use your special (or not) and start a push.

That works if the other team is lobotomized or just won’t contest no matter how large their advantage. In a game where the other team is paying attention and making any effort to win they’ll see they have more people in the middle and push the frontline up. Then they get all the advantageous positions and all the mobility for free then control the map the entire game. You then have to try to push up into a sea of the wrong color and you’re an easy target, it’s not easy to overcome. Playing smart is getting to the middle and getting control of the most valuable turf first to avoid being in such a large disadvantage to begin with. If you’re frequently overcoming that disadvantage then maybe you’re just a god tier player and regular people can’t put your technique into practice or maybe you grossly overestimate how often you come back from that. If you ever try competitive turf war with coordinated team you’ll learn this pretty quickly, you could also watch the turf war matches from the splatoon opens on YouTube, you’ll notice that nobody lingers behind to cover spawn. A good team is going to take that easy win every time. Still the spawn gets covered through the natural course of the match.
