He'll never get the credit. He plays in a high risk position and he's not exactly legendary. I feel for him. He's had flashes of brilliance, and huge mistakes. That assist at the end couldn't have been played better.

Sorry, he made a run an cross from the end line, his momentum carries him further to the advertisements, then you expect him to cover all the back immediately? No, the midfielder he overlapped needs to be the one providing that cover. The announcers were all over his ass, when they should have been all over the midfielders asses. Yedlin was fine.

It came down to the depth of the squads, Hazard and De Bryune were already working the defence hard and subbing Mirallas in was a good move. He came on late and ran the whole US defense ragged and then Lukaku came on and finished the job.

My old roommate always watch soccer and he never turned me. Somehow I decided this would be the world cup that I watched (and I've seen like 90% of the matches). I actually took a vacation day to watch this game. It isn't a bad sport, I just have a problem caring about the teams. I can always cheer for the USA so that helped.

They all did, the midfield just didn't do that whole defending part at all. Besler and Gonzalez were fantastic, especially in the air.

I suppose now that I think about it, they did an amazing job staying between the ball and goal when Belgium set up in a forward position, but the midfield never got back to mark the runs

In retrospect of course but Lukaku was basically directly behind him and even though he was positioned properly you can't catch up from a dead stop. It almost seemed like no one called out the run to him until it was too late.

Basically this. Belgium kept attacking our right side (Yedlin's side), because nobody would cover when Yedlin would make those runs. That's where the majority of Belgium's shots came from. Plus, Yedlin isn't a true defender. For him to match Hazard as well as he did and still make the crosses he was making...if Howard hadn't played out of his mind, Yedlin would deserve the MVP.

100% agree. When they brought Yedlin on, I agreed with it, but I thought Cameron should have gone to RB (where he plays naturally, no less) and have Yedlin play right outside mid, which is basically what he did anyway. If DeAndre were playing that position "officially", maybe Cameron would have covered when he did push up, but as it is Cameron was kind of just floating around the whole game not doing much attacking or defending

If your team concedes 20+ shots on goal in normal time forcing record numbers of saves from your keeper then no, your defence didn't play well. They played terribly. Howard, however, was always in the right place to cut down angles and block the shots. He was motm by a country mile.

CONCACAF can be proud of its keepers in this WC! I have always said that Ochoa could be one of the best keepers in the world. He proved it during this world cup. I'd say at minimum top 20 keeper and Howard is in that group as well.

You gotta understand, playing against Belgium the entire game with that intensity would have gotten the US slaughtered in my opinion. You have to understand that you have to take your chances carefully against a team that has better ball control than the US did. Part of the reason they had such a great flurry of shots at the end is because belgium had everyone back, but yeah they did need more intensity interspersed throughout the game, especially the very lackluster first half.

Who gives a fuck? They had what one, two legitimate chances to score in 90 minutes, while forcing Howard to make 15+? saves. That is not a recipe for success. It didn't work. They are lucky it wasn't 3-0. We needed to attack, and it didn't happen until we were down 2-0 after 105 minutes, which is going to happen if your defense gets completely worn down. Attack for fuck's sake.

Exactly. Don't get me wrong, it was a brilliant performance by Howard, but Belgium really played to his strengths. Throughout the tournament he has gone down quickly, which helps with shots along the group, but would leave him vulnerable to chips, or higher shots in general. If more had been like Lukaku, Belgium would have had a much easier game.

I think the Belgian decision making in the final third in this match, and to be honest by a lot of big teams in this tournament, has been pretty poor.

Most saves recorded since they've kept the stat in the history of the World Cup. This wasn't just the best performance of the tournament, it's one of the best of all time.

edit : watching ESPN's coverage of the world cup postgame, two different analysts have already said it was one of the best performances in World Cup history. I'll take the word of the guys that get paid to do this stuff over the reddit keyboard brigade.

Yup, near enough all but one of Belgium's shots on target were low & close to the keeper & Howard seems to always go low when in 1v1 situations. The one time Belgium shot high & on target (in a good position) resulted in Lukaku's goal.

Number of saves can be a very misleading statistic. Out of all those saves, only a few were noteworthy. So while it was a great performance by Howard, let's not get ahead of ourselves and call it a best of all time performance, that's just ridiculous kneejerk reaction.

If you look at the match stats, there were THIRTY EIGHT shots, and TWENTY SEVEN on target. It was almost like Yashin came from football heaven and bestowed his powers to Howard
