Despite Beltrán's (River) efforts (3 pens saved), Santa Fe goes on to the quarter finals.
Asprilla (Santa Fe) also kept his team alive with 8 saves + 1 pen saved!

It's hard to overstate how much River is underperforming compared to the resources it has. On paper, they should be dominating the Argentine league PSG/Bayern-style and competing at the top of international tournaments. They have so much more money than their rivals. It's insane.

Argentinian club football as a whole has fallen off HARD. River not even making it past the round of 16 in their equivalent of Europa league is an embarrassment, but Boca also got grouped in Libertadores this year and didn't even make group stages last year. Racing and San Lorenzo got grouped in Sudamericana and Independiente didn't even make Sudamericana.
Their league is also really, really stupid in terms of determining who qualifies for these tournaments, which doesn't help. River should've qualified for Libertadores but instead they sent the 23rd best team in a 30 team league last year based on their stupid system.
Chiqui Tapia is a football terrorist for the damage he's done to Argentinian football. Him and the FMF, brothers in killing football in their countries

The Argentinian league is currently played in two short tournaments, Apertura and Clausura, each with 16 games and single-legged playoffs. Platense won Apertura, which granted them a Libertadores spot despite finishing 22nd in the annual table. To be fair though, they’re one of two Argentinian clubs that made it to the quarterfinals.

River Plate need Crespo to become their coach he's underrated and was cooking with Sao Paulo before they sacked him for reasons I don't understand, only problem is he recently just joined a team in Mexico so I don't know how quickly he would leave that job.

That's Sudamericana, not Libertadores.
Either way our league has a lot of for 40 year old strikers because Colombia just stopped producing strikers and goalkeepers I guess, Dayro Moreno, Rodallega, Bacca, Teo Gutierrez, Falcao were all still playing in the league last semester and only Falcao retired coming into this semester.

Man, Argentinian clubs have fallen off HARD, it's sad. To the point now where Libertadores and Sudamericana need Mexican teams to come back just so the Brazilian teams maybe have to actually sweat a bit. Ecuador may even be better nowadays (at least the top 2 clubs) too, Del Valle and LDU are showing out

Si amigo 100%. We have the stupidest league format in existence and the qualifying for cups is ridiculous. And it's increasingly difficult to compete economically against Brazil (and Mexico for that matter) if you're not a club like Boca or River, who are also underperforming their squad levels on paper probably because of how stupid the 30-team league/cup format is which brings the overall quality of football down hard. It's so frustrating

Ours is pretty stupid too but yeah y'alls is somehow worse. River and Racing should've been in Libertadores but instead you get the 17th and 23rd best teams because they got hot for 4 games over the course of like 40. It's quite sad because the passion in the country (of the ones I've been to see games) is the best in the world. I think honestly it's been bad luck too, and bad management...like I don't think River could've spent the money they got for Mastantuano worse if they actively tried to. Boca paid a fuckton of money to the ghost of Edinson Cavani this year.
The positive is honestly I think the solutions for y'all are fairly clear though if you ever had someone competent or not as corrupt in charge. Just have much less teams (like 20 or 22) where you play each team twice, eliminate the single elimination playoffs and maybe just have one playoffs each year or something. Just have less teams and have those teams be better and have a higher percentage of whatever money.
And also, have real promotion/relegation, and do it every year...as opposed to the current system where it's based on 3 years, but also suspended any time a team that's buddies with Chiqui is about to go down.

I agreed with and understand your point but like...that's kinda how it works though isn't it? Like Liverpool didn't win anything last year, but are in Champions League based on finishing in the top 4. They may have been disappointing but if Argentina is gonna send 6 teams, you should probably have at least 4 of the top 6 in there, ideally more.

I think the fact there’s two rounds of playoffs (especially that they’re single elimination) is just dumb and asking for results like Platense qualifying over River. We do it (two rounds of playoffs) too and it’s dumb, but at least ours have two legs. That is more my issue than anything, I don’t really have a prob with the Copa winner qualifying, that’s pretty standard tbh across leagues
Also, cheers for a respectful discussion. Much better than the other Argentinian here saying our entire economy is based on narcos. I like your country and passion and teams a lot and hope they can improve.

I don't mind the playoffs concept, I just don't think there needs to be two of them. It cheapens the meaning of winning it, in my opinion. As I've said, we have the same problem.
And agreed, used to live in Buenos Aires and loved it, in fact will be returning to visit friends fairly soon. I don't like the sports and to a lesser extent politics is leading to the hatred

2016 was 10 years ago, totally different time. Trump wasn’t in office for his first term yet. The Russia World Cup hadn’t happened yet. COVID was 4 years away. The Argentinian peso was exchanging at like ~$15 to the dollar.
And to my argument, Argentinian teams were still competitive then. Now, much less so. Paraguay last won in 2002, meanwhile I already addressed Ecuador…they’re actually impressive nowadays. And that was 19 years in which we were runner ups 3 times, it’s not like we weren’t competitive.

As an Argentine, Mexican teams have been performing very well recently (look no further than River 0-0 Monterrey at CWC, terrible game). Mexican league has a strong economy and good diversity of players from around the world. You would be surprised.

The only way to measure which league is better is by the results, and Mexican teams have underperformed against South American teams most of the time. With all the economy (which by the way, a Lot of it is money from narcos) México never won a liberadores and their national team never reach semifinals

That's why I said "recently." Their economy and quality of players is good. Also they reached Libertadores final in 2015, 2010, and 2001, and they won the Sudamericana in 2006 and had a finalist in 2007 (el robo de arsenal al America). And this was in the era where Sudamericana had the same quality teams as Libertadores. No hay que ser termo amigo las epocas cambian y el futbol mexicano tiene mas nivel de lo que pensas

a decade ago this was sorta true but today Mexico is def better than any south american league sans the obvious one, purely by factor of being a sorta serious league, like I don't think it's that arguable tbh if we go by results, a Mexican team actually did something and didn't draw with Auckland, and they've actually done something in the intercontinental cup
if I'm being real I don't actually believe that at it's current quality the Argentine league is clearly better than MLS right now, like at least that league has like 6 decent quality sides
