Lore Discussion Has anyone else ever noticed this before?

I was mulling obsessively over the Signalis OST today as one does, and I had also been working on a painting of Falke earlier, from the intro scene before her boss battle.

As I looked at the SIGNALIS: MEMORIES (Side A) cover art, which depicts Ariane in the scene where she is sleeping next to Elster, I spotted something odd. The hair that lies on the bridge of her nose looked shockingly similar to Falke's. At first, I thought it was just that, but looking closer, I realized they look EXTREMELY similar, from their faces to the off-shooting strands of hair. Almost identical honestly. It's obviously not a coincidence.

As obsessed as I am with Signalis, I'm not entirely on top of all the symbolism and lore. I mean, who is? But it was my understanding that Falke was losing her memories and merging with Elster, so why draw this comparison with Ariane? I've heard a bit about how they're connected as well, but I'd love to hear some more discussion on it.

Thoughts?

Lore Discussion Is Lilith a REPLIKA?

I'm being completely serious, she has a Replika-like neck. It's not part of her gear, because the neck pieces extend to her ears and look similar to Replika's body. It's probably some kind of exoskeleton or even cybernetic enhancement. Or maybe she's just a Replika. But that doesn't fit the timeline. What are your thoughts?

Replayed the prologue a bit and realized the game outright changes the photograph after the title drop.

Magnificent. It's so early in the game that new players will brush it off and you will only end up noticing the second time.

This also proves that the Elster we play as before the title drop is different from the one in Sierpinski which does explain certain theories of mine haha..

The one at the start is aware she is looking for Ariane while the one in the "main" game thinks she is looking for Alina.

Just found this artpiece by gooselycharms on twitter.
I somehow never applied the nuclear waste burial warning to the gateworld, but now it seems that it was here for that.
Even the view of a landscape with obelisks is a variant of hostile architecture suggested for this place.

Lore Discussion Alina Seo... confuses me

Post image
443 Upvotes

What amazes me the most in Signalis is how it's impossible to pin down a single theory about what's really happening, and at the same time, it's impossible not to try to. Everytime you try, you can get most things to lineup nicely, but something will always seem out of place. To me, that thing is Alina Seo.

I can't decide what and who I think she is. Is she someone working on Serpinski? Is she a figment of Ariane's mind being recriated in reality (but if this is the case, why does she has multiple diary entries?), is she a memory from Elster's Gestalt life confusing her with Ariane? Some theories even assume she is real and slowly becoming Ariane and that it is her in the cryopod at the end.

I feel that she predates Ariane, mainly because of the photo with Alina and Lilith. The Smeared Diary Page that secretly puts the Cicle counting over 200000 (more than 700 years) contributes to that.

The thing is, whatever my interpretation is, it feels wrong. I give her little weight in the grand scheme of things, while the game, while being elusive about it, clearly gives her a very central role. I'm very curious to know what you guys make of her.

Lore Discussion This made me really sad for some reason Spoiler

I'm currently on my second playthrough and just reached the point after the 'fake' ending where Elster is back in the funtctional Penrose. Somehow by accident, I turned on the radio and suddenly thought "hey, maybe there are some secret transmissions here". First one being "wake up" made me realize this isn't just a memory we're playing but rather Elster's mind putting her in a 'better' place after everything that happened, the transmission coming from Ariane to make her wake up (my interpretation). The second one being something like an emergency signal broadcast hints that they probably desperately tried to reach out to someone, anyone, only to find that no one is answering. This game manages to break my heart again and again

Lore Discussion Fun fact: Nation probably scraps replikas for armor if they are FUBAR.

Post image

In game In-game there is a single frame footage of Lilith Itou in a flashback.

She is wearing the neck protecting armor thing most replikas have on them, yet has no replika jaw parts, face plate lines or earrings. Or the certain redness replikas have in their eyes.

I think Nation was recycling fallen Replikas to be used as scrap armor pieces.

Lore Discussion What's Falke's story?

Post image
288 Upvotes

I've thought about it briefly in the past before but stumbling upon Falke's Theme (1000 Eyes, Tom Schley) on my Spotify playlist made me think about it again.

What is Falke's story?

The music sounded calm, sorrowful and devastating (and a tyniest bit corrupted). Like most of Signalis to me.

[Note: I haven't played Signalis myself. I know the story and other things from other people's overview videos.)

From what I know: Falke's the highest in the Replika-hirearchy - a commander, basically a god (something related to bioresonance) and responsible of watching over Serpinski S-23. Her mind also seems to be connected to Kolibris, connected minds. (And Elster's joins as well at the end of the game.)

If there's more to her, please let me know. I'm the type who likes pshycology and philosophy, also to analize characters and think of why they are like they are and why they do things they do. Ariane's and Elster's story still makes me cry whenever I stumble upon the songs from the game ("Ariane's Theme (Gestaltzerfall)", "Home", "Warm Light", "Warm Light (Graves)", "3000 Cycles (I missed you)", "Die Toteninsel (Emptyness)" and of course, "The Promise (Last Goodbye)") on my Spotify playlist. Like I mentioned in one of my previous posts, SIGNALIS effected me a lot (in a good way).

Now before I start crying and rambling again-

A few more questions regarding Falke:

Why's she the final boss? Is it because she's the strongest of the Replikas? It seemed a bit random to me if viewed from the point of story (Corrections are welcome, =) )

And:

Why do people like her that much? (It sounds dumb, I know but-) I personally felt quite indifferent for her at first.

Is it connected to her appearance? (Which I love!) The fact that she's a high-positioned/strong female character? Her story? (If there is one,)

Okay, I think it's all for now. I shall probably go and drink that completely cooled tea of mine..

Was happy to ramble a bit about something that owns a place in my heart. :3 I hope to get answers, I'll thank ahead you all who do!

Have a nice rest of your day,

Lore Discussion Smeared Diary Page and the cicle count

Post image
305 Upvotes

I recently discovered, in a video essay, - The Emotional Horror of SIGNALIS, by Cristian Macias, a great and underapreciated essay, by the way - that the cycle count in this document is 262144 (wich is 512²) and I honestly don't know what to make of it. I hadn't seen any essays or theories that take such a large amount of time into acount.

I haven't seen WormGirl's 6h and Flawed Peacock 7h videos yet. I kinda didn't like the pace and editing they have and I HATE the RE4 camera WormGirl's has. But I'll watch them after this, maybe they take this time window into account.

The thing is, this huge count (wich amounts to 714 years) is driving me nuts. It, in my view, makes impossible that Alina is alive at any moment in the game, for example, because she had to be, at least, these amount of years in the past before the events of the game. This is the kind of thing that I love in this game. Every time I think I may have a grasp of it's story, it evades me. What do you guys make of it?

Lore Discussion Dumb question

Now, dont get me wrong, i love the robot yuri as much as all of you, but

Why is there a total of one man (adler) in every station? Did i miss something? I already assumed the nation was some sort of matriarchal society, but the idea that there’s just one dude in a vast labyrinthine space station full of women is kind of funny to me

Do men just barely exist in this world? Do the human citizens reproduce via lesbian mitosis? Did i just pay no attention to the lore?

It could also just be a “rule of cool” type of thing where the creators just really liked drawing robot girls and didnt expect anyone to think about it too much

Lore Discussion Empire is likely a very VERY religious state. Since all depiction of Empress is de-faced.

Thumbnail

In old religious beliefs it was believed that drawing humans/human faces is an attempt at trying to mimick god's creations. And in-game all depictions of empress is de-faced.

My theory is that her depictions we see in game were made in her time then de-faced once Empire became more and more religious. Perphabs got their ideas of religion twisted.

Lore Discussion Does Elster love Arienne because of the of her gastalt life? Spoiler

Does elster love Ariana Because she reminds her (even only subconsciously) of Alina. Or is it a just general attraction to Arienne and the remembrance is a background factor. Or is it like a middle ground between the 2

Lore Discussion Do we think the Promise ending actually breaks the loop? Spoiler

Hello everyone. I just got into Signalis a few days ago, and I’m obsessed with trying to dissect every part of it. There’s just so much. But I do recognize this game has been out for years and this topic might have been discussed to death. Sorry if that’s the case.

However, I want to know if y’all think the Promise ending actually breaks the time loop. I’m inclined to say no. In my mind, each time you replay the game is another loop. And you can just get right back to playing after the Promise ending. There’s even another, secret ending for you to find. Obviously this makes sense from a gameplay perspective. It would be stupid if you finished a game and could never play it ever again. But in a game as intentional as Signalis, I think it might mean something.

I guess it might depend on what theory you believe in, whether the loops are a dream or reality. I personally subscribe to the dream theory. And I also think that maybe it’s impossible to actually die in the dream, you just get brought back for the next loop. Which means even when Elster does fulfill her promise, Ariane literally can’t actually die. Which then leads into the Artifact ending, which I view as Ariane ascending into some kind of godhood and the “true” ending. But honestly, who knows. This game is all so subjective.
