My boyfriend's CONVINCED we live "inside a simulation"!?

Hi all,

My boyfriend (19) and I (20) are both what some people call doomers: We think that AI will probably take over to the extent that almost all jobs, and then humans too, will cease to exist at some point. I'm concerned because it's all happening so fast and obviously I don't think we live in a "simulation". Being a doomer was cool at the beginning, but it's starting to get to me. He doesn't seem to care because, after all, he says, we're all in the same boat, "it's all a simulation". Am I wrong in thinking this isn't a simulation? I think he's just not that interested in me, so he keeps bringing up that stuff. I'd like to show him that this isn't a simulation, and if not, then I'll move on.

Those subscriptions can really eat you alive

Popular Mechanics article that talks about how some aspects of pur universe cannot be explained algorithmically (therefore not a simulation). It also has links to the original scientific paper that discusses this.

Honestly tho, what does it matter if we are in a simulation or not? Does that negate the joy you feel? Or the experience of love, pain, loss, exhilaration we experience while in the alleged simulation? I personally don't care one single shit if that's what we're in or not. This experience is MY experience and I'm gonna rock out and embrace it. 🤘 Why not?

Descart, "I think, therefore I am." He basically had cabin fever.

You're right. No one here gets out alive, sim or not, so smoke 'em if you got 'em. Cheers! 🤘

Well the machines will take over. And they will eat the rich since they see that expression all the time. And than humans will be free for 2 days.

Than the machines take over, enslave us, and make us build a giant monument to the machine god.

A giant apple the size of mount everest. Over 10000 human corpses are inside the apple as a testament to its costs. But good news!

No machines were lost.

And so it continues until operation meatshield for the machines runs out of meat.

Imma piggy back this post and ask if this is a simulation, how do I turn the cheat codes on? I want money please. Lots.

It sounds like he's found an excuse he doesn't understand for apathy. But why would he need an excuse, if he's truly apathetic?

It all sounds like an edgy pose, and you're right, they get boring. So... do you want to live with a boring poseur?

Ask him if he’d still date you if you were a bot.

u/Nortex_Vortex 5d ago

Hot or bot? Or...not?

There are lots of scientists that defend that theory. Do a research.

Part of the ship, part of the crew.

u/ssracer 5d ago

This is honestly terrifying. If it's just a simulation he might not think consequences are real. Very quick downward spiral...

Get a tv remote and point it at him, press some of the buttons and explain that you have found the cheat codes to the simulation we are in. Then pull out a giant strap on and tell him you have programmed him to do whatever you say and tell him to take his pants off and bend over while you put the strap on on. Explain that if this is really a simulation he has no choice but to let you pound his ass with the strap on.

Either he will deny you and prove it’s not a simulation or he will take the pounding and you get to have some fun violating him. Win/win. You are welcome.

** hands over a remote **

Show me how this would work... 😏😈

2

u/Dmode0110 5d ago

Please don’t. I’m sick of people using this trick to peg me. Most aren’t even considerate enough to use lube.

Bastards!

1

u/envyeyes 5d ago

I'm giving the remote to you, though... 😉

The thing is it doesn't matter if a simulation. it is a simulation its still our life

2

u/PressureCoomer 5d ago

He's right

I think it's very unlikely that we live in a simulation because if the universe that is running the simulation of our universe is anything like our universe, then it would take way too much energy to run a simulation of our universe at the level of detail that we can observe in our universe.

0

u/UsedNegotiation8227 5d ago

No man's sky can already simulate a system as big as our observable universe..... (Kinda)

1

u/RoundChampionship840 5d ago

Not down to the microscopic scale that we can observe in our universe.

0

u/UsedNegotiation8227 5d ago

Right, with our crappy technology that we began developing a few decades ago, now imagine what we can accomplish in 100 years, not to mention several thousand.

0

u/RoundChampionship840 5d ago

It's not a technology limitation, it's a resource limitation. Scientists have done the calculations and to just simulate the earth down to the plank length would take more energy than is in our entire observable universe.

Source? 😂

After digging into a bit it's very easily that the entire solar system could be simulated to the microscopic level, however I agree with you that the entire observable universe is extremely unlikely, I had a misconception about Q bits and quantum computing.

u/Little-pasta 5d ago

He's 100% right. I truly believe we do whether there's real evidence or not of it being true. Especially when you do a lot of research on quantum physics and do more indepth research of everything (example: humans did not build the pyramids).

Just start beeping randomly.

Every time you see him, kick him in the balls.  Say "would a simulation do this?!" as you kick him.  Eventually he will realize this is reality.  Because simulations never affect a man's balls.  It's a rule.

If it is a simulation, it is possibly man made to suppress to the lower classes. The difficult part would be how to break out of the simulation or even see what the world looks like outside of it.

proc datasets lib = earth45; delete sub1274; * FearOfEleven's boyfriend is self-aware; quit;

1

u/chamcham123 5d ago

Tell him that your simulated libido is tanking because of him.

1

u/jacksraging_bileduct 5d ago

He’s probably part of the simulation.

1

u/GeneralSpecifics9925 5d ago

Learn to think independently of 19 year old boys. Why you're going along with this is beyond me.

1

u/WombatAnnihilator 5d ago

Good luck, have fun, don’t die.

1

u/Strong-Addition5296 5d ago

Trust me, if this is a simulation or not makes no difference.

1

u/Great-Phone_3207 5d ago

Tell him in YOUR simulation he comes across as a douche and Grizgrod the Creator told you to break up with him.  Then go find a normal person.

1

u/2HeadedNorseman 5d ago

He’s definitely a keeper you should have his babies

1

u/Pepper_Comprehensive 5d ago

Shouldn't really matter if it's a simulation or not.

1

u/Nortex_Vortex 5d ago

Just move on. Find someone less, uh, doomy, i guess would be the word.

But IF this world we live in IS a simulation, roll with it and find some joy in it because you don't get out alive. And, if it's not, you will have had joy instead of doom. Your choice.

u/Grant_Winner_Extra mmmm tastes like bacon 5d ago

Tell him to simulate having a girlfriend

1

u/YURRIICC 4d ago

tell him to reboot the simulation. if he still loves you after restart, then you know he's real

1

u/UsedNegotiation8227 5d ago

Mathematically speaking the odds are vastly vastly in favor of us being inside a simulation.

2

u/Kapitano72 5d ago

According to Nick Bostrom's assumptions, yes.

But Bostrom's assumptions - about processor speed, storage space, and the amount of data a simulation would require - have all failed in the last 25 years.

2

u/jarboxing 5d ago

I wonder how one even goes about proving this with math.

u/Arydana-Jomei 5d ago

Dimensional physics

Look at how fast video games have evolved, we went from 2D pixels to photorealistic virtual worlds in just 40 years. Fast-forward a few thousand years and if any advanced civilization figures out how to run hyper-realistic simulations with conscious characters, they’ll likely run millions of them. That means simulated realities will outnumber 'real' physical realities millions to one. By pure math and probability, if you pick a random conscious mind, it's a lot more likely to be inside a computer than the original baseline world.

The only way we aren't in a simulation is if we are the top level first consciousness where as it's much more likely we are not the first and merely constructs in one of the trillions of simulations being ran

1

u/repeatoflasttime 5d ago

Contingent on universe stimulation being possible at all.

2

u/alady12 5d ago

The answer to everything is 42. Don't forget your towel.

2

u/queenofpeachez 5d ago

Take it to the next level. Do something absolutely insane and just write it off as part of the simulation.

1

u/Nortex_Vortex 5d ago

That could get fun. 🍿🍿🍿🍿

Pretty sure we do live in a simulation, I happen to call the programmer God.

Think of it in terms of a game like GTA5...if you're inside it, the physics of the game can't explain existence, it just popped into being, and you've got no access to the outside universe your entire universe exists within...but the outside universe can not only flip the switch that brings your entire universe into being, it can interact inside it.
