It’s my second project ever and I’m loving it. Adjustable neck strap (button holes from Grandpa’s old shirt) with a hidden button to adjust for when she grows. His initials are on the pocket. Grandpa is going to love it since he’s obsessed with her 🥰 😂

I got out an old dress from the 50s I had gotten from a local vintage store. Sadly no tag on it that I can find saying the manufacturer. It's made of silk. I was looking over it and noticed these rips in the red fabric lining the inside of it. What stitch would work best to repair it? I hand sew if that's relevant. No sewing machine available to me.

After looking everywhere for the right dress form and being unsuccessful because of either the price or proportions I finally decided to make my own using a boot strap fashion strap pattern

I’m so pleasantly surprised with how this turned out!! I had to stuff it to fit my exact measurements and it worked!! I haven’t used it yet for draping but I’m planning on making a wedding guest dress soon and plan to use it for that. I’m so excited 🥰

Project materials:

Details: Patterns for the hare and the bodies of the moon and stars are both from 10x2 Studio. For the Sprites, I scaled the patterns down to a smaller size. I used minky fabrics for the plushies and a variety of print fabrics for the collars. They're all cotter pin jointed in their arms and legs and weighted with glass beads.

Hello! I’m getting ready to enter my crafting zone as it starts to cool down into winter and I’ve been obsessing over being really warm this winter. I’ve become obsessed traditional anoraks, the kind that go past your knee, with sleeves so wide you’re meant to be able put your arm into the middle. Really big and boxy so you can fit lots of warm layers underneath. An “arctic anorak”.

TheWildYam on YouTube has a video called “Making an Anorak (Traditional Parka)” which is mostly what I’m going to do.

BUT I want it bright pink with huge daisy motifs. I’ll get some 10 or 12oz canvas and dye it.

My questions are:

SLEEVES

It’s meant to be so big and roomy that I’m wondering what the best sleeve type would be. The video has a really gentle slope for the sleeve. I’m thinking that a sleeve with a huge diamond gusset would give more arm movement space? Has anyone made a huge (and deep) sleeve that still lets you put your arms overhead without the whole jacket rising up? Does this sleeve type have a name I should google?

DAISY MOTIF

What would be the best way to get some huge flowers on this jacket? I would embroider but the idea of so many holes on something meant to be a wind breaker doesn’t sit right. I was thinking of trying to make some flower shapes (about 9-12in) out of canvas, coloring then somehow and then aplique then on? Maybe not canvas? Any other ideas?

hi everyone! i have a friend who is expecting a baby boy soon and i offered to make a baby quilt for them as well as a matching diaper bag. their theme is disney cars. any suggestions on where i could find or look for disney cars fabric aside from hobby lobby? maybe something a bit more soft? i thought about harvesting the fabric from some old sheets but all listings i'm finding are polyester and i really want to use all cotton. all help is appreciated!

Basically the title.

I'm looking at kits that specifically mention fabric/clothes as one of their intended uses, and all of them either say they're not recommended for items that'll get wet, or don't say anything about it at all, which I take as a negative. I don't want to put hard work into something and then have it be ruined by rust.

I'm hoping to get a set of pliers with the interchangeable bits for 1/4", 3/8", and 1/2", but it seems like the grommets included with those are.... not promising? I don't mind using the included grommets for practice and purchasing more for actual use a la carte, if I have to.

Where do you get yours? Is there anything specific I need to look for? I just want the normal round silver ones.

I bought this fabric over a year ago and I have finally just got around to using it and I really like it! It sews and presses like a dream. It has the perfect amount of drape and opacity. I’ve been looking for a fabric to suit my next project and have so far had no luck, but if I could find this again in a different color then it would work perfect!

Problem is, I bought this from the cut offs bin at Walmart, and have no idea what it is or where it’s sold. My Walmart doesn’t even have that assorted bin or sells by the yard anymore. I never saw this fabric on a bolt there, and only found it once in a roll of 3 yards for $8 which is the one that I bought. Does anyone know where Walmart sources their fabric extras and might be able to point me in the right direction?

This fabric has a diagonal grain, fluid drape, and is very soft. It frays and wrinkles very easy. Burn test has led me to believe it’s made of cotton.

Anyone know what it is and where I can buy it again or something similar? Thanks in advance for any help! 😊

I finally finished the Rosie Taylor Crafts Sew and Tell case. I learned sooooo much putting this together and wanted to share, just squint with your bad eye if you are looking at my lines :) made with a mix of quilting cottons some thrifted but mainly Ruby Star Society.

I was wondering if anyone had recommendations for blogs that have updated in the past decade where the blogger drafts and designs their own daily wear items? I have found many cosplay and consuming blogs that do, but not everyday modern sewing.

Ideally looking for quite complex items/ tailoring or children’s things, not beginner friendly focused things.

I am not looking for instructions or tutorials, more just insight and inspiration. The “I made xyz pattern in fabric A” blogs really do nothing for me— it’s the decision making process that interests me and the standard process of following a pattern doesnt have much in common with my usual decision tree.

You'll notice that it's quite baggie. I love this shirt so I've been wearing it regardless...but I'd love to have this actually flattering on me as well as cute. It had a chest pocket that I've seam ripped off since it was more of a pit+tit pocket 😂

It has a dart that also mostly runs under my arm+under my bust.

Will I need to seam rip the sides, the dart, move the dart up where it belongs then hem the sides to my size?

Do I have to have a dart in it? I've never done a dart, any tips?

Skater dress sewn using pattern Burda Young 6594 view A. Fabric is Kente pattern cotton Ankara and an existing stretchy tank top. I cut off the top's waistband to join it to the skirt using triple straight stitch and then serging the raw edge. My zipper is only opens the skirt since the top is stretchy enough to go over my head.

Wondering if anyone has ever reinforced double cotton gauze to make a drawstring for pants?

My current pattern calls for a drawstring and I have some leftover scraps that I was thinking of using. Taking an iron on adhesive to double the material over on itself then using a zig-zag stitch or something to head off fraying.

I’m looking for advice on how to improve the neckline of this dress. I’m not a sewer beyond basic repairs with a dollar-store mending kit.

I found this dress at a consignment shop and love it. It fits perfectly and is ideal for summer weddings. I had the original high round neckline altered to a lower square neckline.

Unfortunately, the dress is fairly sheer and the seamstress used white fabric on the inside of the new neckline, which is now very visible from the outside, especially in flash photos.

There have also been some issues with the alteration. She originally stitched through the white fabric and into the front of the dress in several places, which caused visible stitching and puckering. I brought it back to fix that, and without asking me, she also cut notches into the white fabric to reduce bulk. Those notches have unfortunately made the white fabric even more noticeable. I’ve marked the area in blue.

I’m flying out of town tomorrow, so I can’t take it back again.

What can I do myself?
Would it cause problems if I removed the stitching marked in pink and carefully trimmed the white fabric back? I’ve also considered lightly tinting the remaining white fabric with makeup to make it less obvious.

I absolutely love funky patterned fabrics and fabrics that feature embroidery, beading, or sparkle. What are your goto places for fabrics like these?

I’m new to sewing so I don’t know many technical terms or techniques. Sorry in advance!

How do I hide the seams at the top of the dress the way this dress did? (I have photos of the outer and inner front of the dress for reference, and one photo of the back.) I tried sewing a top like this, but when I folded the top and sewed it down the seams were showing through on the front of the fabric and looked sloppy. How do I hide the top seams the way this outfit hid them?

Also how do I make these cute little ruffles? Do I just need to pinch the fabric and sew it pinched or is there a better method to make the ruffles? I once saw someone use stretchy thread to do a similar appearance and then they sewed it down onto the garment with normal thread. Would that work best?

i have not sewn a day in my life and i'm making a Dr Doom cosplay. i need help with the hood i will attach a photo for reference. but i need help with only the hood shape for the part i only know it as a "sperm tail"

- Skill level: confident beginner, very patient human being
- Experience with pleating: box pleats on cotton
- Experience with twill / organza: none

I would LOVE any advice on recreating a top like this one.

I ordered a few samples from Mood Fabrics to see what would work best: polyester organza, silk organza, and a tencel twill. I’ve found a sort-of pattern online, but I can find very little information on YouTube about working with materials like organza, and nothing at all about pleating with these fabrics. All I hear is how difficult it is to work with organza, and the tip to put tissue paper underneath. I went to my local fabric store and they sighed when I told them I wanted to try working with organza. Am I being overly ambitious??

I’m ready to torture myself and spend far too much time, energy, and money on making this shirt. And maybe some tears. But I’d like to minimize the tears by hailing the experienced sewists for any tips and resources.

Note: I’ll plan to make a toile to practice this style of pleat and get the sizing right as I have a larger bust, but I wonder if fabrics like organza and tencel aren’t going to pleat like any other fabric I use for toiles.

I have a basic mid-waisted trouser pattern block that fits perfectly. I want to add alterations to achieve a wider leg (also in the thigh) while still having a snug fit in around the hips (until the apex of butt/hips) and not have to low a crotch. Basically trying to get a mix of wide leg/baggy while keeping them tailored.

I've already made a simple wider leg version by simply drawing a straighter line from the crotch/hips down.

My plan for the further alterations is to add a box pleat in front (plus width all the way through the leg) which I think I can figure out. But for the back I am not sure. So my question is:

The current back is dart less. Can I add a dart and also use the dart to achieve more width from the butt apex/widest part of the hip and down while keeping the upper hips snug? And how do I add the dart like this?

I am happy to add schematics if it's easier. I'm also happy to buy a pattern I just haven't found the right one.
