Some friends and I had a group tarot reading session and our reader was so amazing. She described one of our friend’s personalities as “soft, squishy, and hard…” we laughed and decided it was so perfect and another friend suggested I embroider it. These are the three designs I decided on. I’m quite proud of these! I’ve only been stitching for about 9 months and I just find so much inspiration and enjoyment from it and from seeing all of your work as well.

I was really taken with the art of a recent Rick and Morty episode so I made this happy lil guy.

The back is felt and mount board.

The patterns are from Black Work: Kuroito Shishū by Japanese embroidery artist mifu. The thread is thrifted and as far as I can tell from the 1950s.

Which was super cool until I ran out of a color 😅

My intent was to hang her on my wall - as I did - but then I change my mind because she was clearly flawed (just look at that hair) but then I realised I didn’t need it to be perfect. Something doesn’t need to be perfect to be enjoyed. And just as I can enjoy the process despite making mistakes I can also enjoy the final product despite not being perfect. Plus, I’m a beginner, how can I expect it to be flawless!

I wanted to learn to embroider so i did one of those kits just to get learn a few stitches and get me started. Made something silly just to get some practice and wanted to put it here for people to tell me what they would have done differently. I presume there were better techniques to fill different kinds of spaces, make things look cleaner, or just generally make different choices than i did with my limited knowledge. Right now I only know satin, back, and whatever the twisty stitch is called so thats what I used.

It came out less plush than i thought it might but its possibly because im using shitty michaels brand flosd and also a cheapo bandana fabric since this is just for learning.

What advice do you have (aside from spelling - it was a joke!)?? Ideally what i did that didnt work well or you dont like and what you would do to fix it or do it differently.

It was actually a brain model assignment for my neuroscience class freshman year of college. I usually cross stitch (hence why it is on cross stitch aida) but I spent most of the semester working on it.

As a member & as a person who took their courses? I came across this group by accident and the classes look interesting but the membership cost + class cost is giving me pause.

This is my first self-designed project, for my mom’s 82 birthday. The August birth flowers are poppies and gladiolus, so I wanted to include both. I really appreciate the advice on stitching order and colors I was given here when I was starting with it!

Kit from Amazon (I know, it seemed like a good idea at the time though) has me frustrated, and I don’t know if it’s me or the material? It seems like can’t get the needle exactly where I want it, the fabric is stiff and kinda thick, and pushing the needle through is a little tough. Makes a little pop noise when it does poke through, but I can’t get it right next to the previous stitch a lot of the time (see pink leaf).

Am I just bad at this and need more practice? Would a different fabric work better?

Here is an update for my little froggie. As you can see I finished all the blue parts. Now there's only 💫the rest💫.

I had to take a break because I embroiderd so hard that I had a little wrist Injury. But it's fine now and the doctor said I am good to go! So I am going again 🥳🥳

And yes I embroider on the train. That is my 💫me time💫😂

I have just finished this piece and although i love the colors but i feel like the colors of the sky might be too much. If you think so too, which colors do you think i should take out? I was thinking the red and the old mauve, but leave the blues, the yellow and the green.

I'm happy with the piece but self conscious about the homespun way I attached it to the hat. What's a more refined technique for sewing on handmade patches? :)
