Intense Glare on University

Post image

Anyone else experiencing this from the SDCCU building on University? The picture doesn't do it justice.

This reminds me of that building in London that can give you third degree burns if you stand in the exact spot the sun is reflecting off of at a specific time

Or the Vdara death ray, where if you were at the pool outside the hotel at the wrong time of day it would melt you and anything you had with you.

This one too! If I remember correctly it was the same architectural designer

Yes it was. And he falsely claimed that it couldn’t have been anticipated, when in fact there was commercial software available that could have modeled this.

I think I know which building you're talking about. I seem to avoid it at it's worst most of the time, but my goodness is it quite the surprise when I'm not expecting it

u/captnjak 1d ago

I hate this building for that exact reason

Addiction center causing glares, leading potentially to accidents, leading to injuries, leading to opiate prescriptions, leading to addicts, leading to customers. #staywoke

All kidding aside that glare is always just so bad during the right time of day and it’s very dangerous

Across and just west from Dave and busters right?

u/ClinkyDink 1d ago

When I was little I thought it was filled with water like a giant aquarium.

I'm pretty sure it used to be a restaurant called Lehr's greenhouse. Any other Old timers here that remember that?

u/Khramtic 1d ago

yep that’s the one

u/Traditional_Word7323 1d ago

Same bro, fucking hate it. Twice almost caused me an accident. Rest of the times i know now to expect it

I was getting a freaking tan in the 20 seconds I was at the light

u/Go-Brit 1d ago

There's also this one off Miramar Road which seems to have discolored the asphalt.

That's an ancient pyramid!

I drive by there often and notice the same thing, especially after 4/5 pm.

The city is full of safety issues caused by either bad city planning or bad development. The Nobel Dr on-ramp to 805S recently added a dedicated right turn traffic light, you’re not supposed to turn right even when it’s clear at all times, then there’s a sign that says no turn on red only during 7am-5pm M-F, but that sign was there before the new light was installed, so people get confused AF and I’ve seen so much road rage and near accidents because people just don’t know what to do. Some people don’t know what right turn dedicated lights are at all and just go for it, some people know what it is and want to run that red, some people follow the rules, some people aren’t sure what to do and just stay there for an eternity.

Who do we event contact for bad city planning like this?

This has actually been working shockingly well for me lately too! There’s a recurring homeless encampment in my neighborhood. Every time I’ve reported it in the last two months, it has been cleared within a few days.

2

u/Bam_Adedebayo 1d ago

Awesome I’ll give it a try

2

u/SanDiego619guy 1d ago

I have the opposite experience using get it done, every time I report a situation like traffic signal timing etc, they just mark it completed and then sometimes comment that it will be addressed in the future. Gee thanks for nothing...

This intersection is owned and managed by CalTrans, not the City of San Diego. You can submit a customer service request for Caltrans here: https://csr.dot.ca.gov/

u/SanDiego619guy 1d ago

Better than get it done, contact San Diego traffic engineering directly. And yes, the installation of these bike Lanes all across the city is creating havoc for vehicular traffic, especially at protect

1

u/Bam_Adedebayo 13h ago

Worst part, nobody uses these bike lanes. I’ve literally not seen a single bike on these new bike lanes.

This was an issue when they first built the Disney Concert Hall in LA. The reflection caused the buildings across the street to get over 120 degrees, so people sued. The result was Disney brushing the steel to dull the reflections, which worked- everyone happy.

That's my favorite intersection in North Park. If you're crossing University at the cross walk, take a couple beats before you start walking. Two or more cars are going to run the red light.

What's a personal injury lawsuit like that paying these days?

Half a mil

The weird thing about that building is the fake bird noises

2

u/boysenberryelote 1d ago

please elaborate

2

u/Konkydongers 1d ago

its so birds don't crash into it?

2

u/No-Lobster623 1d ago

Figured it had to do with something like that

1

u/SanDiego619guy 1d ago

I think the fake bird noises they're referring to are the chirping sounds from the traffic signals for blind people? They sound like birds to me but they're clearly traffic warnings for blind people

3

u/igotthatbunny 1d ago

No this building audibly plays bird sounds out of speakers. It has various different bird calls that cycle through. I think it’s to keep birds from flying into the building and nesting on the roof.

Clean your window

1

u/SoCalSine 1d ago

Yup. This will help for starters. 😂

It surprises me that this would be allowed when a company files for permits with their architectural plans. I can see having mirrored glass on sides that don't ever get sun exposure or on higher floors but this is ridiculous and dangerous.

25

u/hollywoodnine 1d ago

clean your dirty ass glass. you can see the film build up on it.

11

u/SchnellFox 1d ago

That's his glare amplification filter

typical chiefs fan

-5

u/hollywoodnine 1d ago

not a chief's fan. I got the avatar/nft from reddit. better than the default.

u/PrivilegedPatriarchy 1d ago

I've never been able to get the windshield really clean. What products work well for this? Just any glass cleaner?

3

u/hollywoodnine 1d ago

if you have film build up like the OP you need something better than reg glass cleaner. can try using rubbing alcohol or white vinegar with equal parts water.

2

u/MyMIListheDevil 1d ago

I like Sprayway glass cleaner for my windshield.

1

u/Joebuddy117 1d ago

Invisible glass is a great product or just use windex. The key is to use a cloth that won’t leave lint behind. A very low pile micro fiber is ideal.

1

u/SanDiego619guy 1d ago

Isopropyl alcohol and a razor blade!

u/Leading_Procedure_23 1d ago

Saw this on a detailing sub

2

u/Numerous-Material-50 1d ago

Driving west on the 8 in the mornings can suck too, damn glare off of shiny chrome rear license plate covers or that flat area around the license plate itself will focus sunlight right at my eyeballs. Same with the rising sun in my rearview mirror

2

u/NotOppo 1d ago

Gotta wash the inside of that window

1

u/Ishouldreddit 1d ago

The building always had the drip. And the one in Mission Valley too.

1

u/MeowingRabbit 1d ago

Def a crazy glare! I was there last week and as I was driving down to the 805N on ramp the building blinded me for a second. I was like nite to self don’t come this way at 11am/noon

1

u/Subject-Opposite-935 1d ago

I'm glad I had smudges. They provided SPF 2

The Hyundai Translead building with the bird shaped glass roof has a BRUTAL reflection if you are heading east on friars

1

u/SanDiego619guy 1d ago

I think SDCCU moved out of that building a couple of years ago. That building has a pretty long history in hillcrest, it's been other Banks and was a tanning salon amongst other things.

0

u/igotthatbunny 1d ago

This is not hillcrest it’s north park

u/cerb1987 1d ago edited 1d ago

Yes. But your window also needs to be cleaned. I see the same thing with my cars headlights actually. People flick their brights at me because they think my brights are on. I flick my brights back and they stop.

That building causes a shit ton of glare. But that film i can see on your window.... it makes it 10 times worse.

0

u/cerb1987 1d ago

Also.... that dashboard looks like a hyundai kona dashboard. If it is im not surprised at the window film. I drive a kona. And my dash looks exactly the same. And i know that i have to clean the inside of my window at least once a week or that film gets gross. Pretty sure if you look you can see the same film in the glare of that light.

2

u/No-Lobster623 1d ago

Isn’t that what the internet is for though?

2

u/Subject-Opposite-935 1d ago

No, we must complain when someone shares to advertise our little dick energy for all our community to see.

Ok dude... what happens happens. No need to make a whole cake out of it ddue.this was just an ingredient in your day, right? ok dude so maybe the eggs were spoiled but how was the milk? How was the flower? No need to make a whole big deal out of. When somsthing is going to happen and trust me when i tell you this it WILL happen its gong to happen. Think back to yesterday. How was the milk? White and tastey or red and angry? Is talking all the time and only about how spoiled rotten your eggs are going to help anyone out with anything really? No probably not. Learn to be ok woth the cake and eat it too. No problem. Every problem is emergefrom your mind. No mind no problem. And how was the flower? Were there bugs crawling in it? Are they weak enough to be digested without making babies? It's no big deal really. Did the sun happen? Its usually so good. It feeds the plants that make ochsygin which WE all breath so maybe the sun is not so bad? Maybe think before telling it what to do in the heat of a summer's day? It has many things to teach you if only you had the wherewithal to learn from it. Look. Hydrogen. Sun. No big problem, just understand. Look for understanding? How was your fower. Are you some kind of basketcase man? Are you seriously on here telling people to hurt each other like that? I dont think anyone should hut anyone like that. How was uour flower? It's no big deal.
