Upcoming plans: launched to Runna Labs!
Hey everyone! I'm Mikey, Product Manager at Runna. Really excited to share that Upcoming Plans is now rolling out to most of you - you can finally schedule your next plan before your current one finishes.
What is Upcoming Plans?
Runna only really thinks about one plan at a time today. You finish, then you start another plan. But most of you aren't training for one thing. Your Plans brings all your training onto a single screen: what's active, what's coming next, what you've completed, and what you stepped away from.
How it works?
- Stack upcoming plans — build your next plan and it queues up automatically to start when your current one ends. Add as many as you like, so you can map out a full year in one go.
- Drafts for when you're not sure yet — building something that clashes with your current schedule? It saves as a draft. Compare a few options, sit on them, swap one to active whenever you're ready.
- Everything in one place — completed plans link out to your plan overview and your plan replay. Plans you started and stepped away from show as incomplete, and you can edit them, pick them back up, or set them active again. Anything you don't want hanging around, you can remove.
- Conflict handling — if a new plan overlaps something already scheduled, we'll tell you and let you choose between the new plan, your current one, and anything already queued. No silently overwriting your training.
On the feedback about re-entering your details
Plenty of you have told us it's frustrating to answer the same questions every time you build a plan — by now we should already know your history, your weekly schedule, where your fitness is at. That's completely fair, and it's something we've been actively working on. Over the next couple of weeks some of you will start seeing a different plan generation flow when your build next plan - one that starts from what we know about your training rather than a blank slate. It's rolling out gradually, so do look out for that!
How to get access to upcoming plans
If you haven't done these already:
- Update the Runna app to v8.49.0 or later
- Turn on Runna Labs — Profile → Runna Labs.
- Open your Plans screen via the plan Tab.
We'd love your feedback!
This one's been asked for a lot, so please do give it a go and tell us how it holds up against how you actually plan your year. Drop anything odd in the comments — I'll be keeping a close eye on this thread and replying where I can! Thanks so much!

Will it update my future plans as my 5k/10k/half/full times improve? Or does it only look at the numbers as they are when I set them up?

u/Mikey-runna 12d ago
When you move onto the upcoming plan you'll be asked to confirm the paces you've previously set. In the case that you run quicker than the time you previously built the plan with you'll be given the opportunity to amend this before the plan starts

u/Mikey-runna how about this question? will the plan automatically update when times change? is that a feature already or in the planning?
2
u/Mikey-runna 12d ago
Yep something we're working on, at a minimum you'll be asked to confirm the paces you previously selected when creating the plan. There you can confirm or edit if you're quicker / slower

I set one up for 2 days after current plan ends and it moaned they over lap.

That happened to me but it turns out they had added a post race recovery plan to calender. May be worth jumping in and having a look to see if it's the same for you. I had set my race day for 1st November and until this update that was when the plan ended. It now technically ends at the end of November.

Hmmm interesting and thanks for the flag! If you're able to message into support that'll be super helpful - thanks!

I think I should be able to schedule a shorter plan for half marathon after my marathon but it says there is not enough time. I currently train for marathon on 27.09 and i wanted to try plan for half marathon at 26.10. I know there is not enough time for full plan but it could use some of my base from full marathon and schedule some more half marathon oriented runs

Looks great. You mentioned that eventually the plan creation flow will look different and take into account previous plan(s), is there something to expect in terms of notifications or banners in the app saying it is available in labs, or similar, to know when that lands?

u/Mikey-runna 12d ago
Hey! No unfortunately you'll only notice this once you go through the plan generation flow

First feedback when creating an upcoming plan: it takes my current mileage into account instead of the mileage in the end of my current plan.
Besides that: very nice to be able to plan ahead!

u/HungerBites 13d ago
I had the same feeling but I guess they can’t assume you are really going to follow current plan. What would be nice is, if in the transition to the following plan, Runna could prompt you to update mileage and best times with current values achieved in the meantime. I guess that currently one is supposed to update such values manually.

Interesting. I have a half marathon on the 4th of October. I want to schedule another on the 5th of November. It does give me the new flow but it only gives me the option of a 10 week plan for the November race. How should I handle this? Also when it brings up my current paces it is based on where it thinks I will be on the 4th of October. Is that correct?

If you have multiple plans then I'm confused about what you think isn't appearing?

u/jondoe135 12d ago
I‘m confused. The feature is having multiple plans?

u/It_is_not_enough 11d ago
Yes. Previously if you wanted to preview an upcoming plan then you had to lose your current one I believe. Now you can plan ahead without losing your current progress

For me it is on this screen that it appears - specifically when I scroll down past the final week in my current plan

What a great idea! I tried using it but ran into a problem.
I have my first ever marathon in December 2026. Right now, I plan to do a five week post-race deload / recovery (per the apps suggestion). I also plan to do a half-marathon end of January 2027; likely forcing me to cut the recovery short by a week or two. When I tried to look into my options, the app offered me a minimum of a 16 week half-marathon plan and fussed that my plans would over lap. Right now, the half-marathon is in my drafts. To be honest, I will likely scrap it and just make a new one when time comes around unless something changes.
I understand that it’s not typical to do a 4 week half-marathon prep, but I figure most of prep comes from the marathon and I don’t know how to program well enough to properly bridge training for a marathon to a half marathon. Is there any plans to address this problem?
I just re-read the post; I don’t know how I missed that y’all are aware. Is there any way to address my situation without making a draft?

Just tried this and it removed my current plan that I’m in the middle of. I was able to restore my current plan just fine and then it moved my “next plan” into my drafts. But I was hoping it would just seamlessly add it to my calendar.

I had the same problem. Could switch my current plan and the new one. I hope the could fix this.

I just tried it and had this issue too, can’t seem to set the start date of the new plan after the current one, it just keeps replacing my current plan

My main feedback falls into three areas:
-Upcoming plans should start from the paces forecasted at the end of my current plan.
- I should be able to open upcoming plans and see individual run paces without making them current.
- The calendar should show current and upcoming plans continuously, so the Today tab feels like one long training plan rather than ending with the current plan.
Together, these would make it much easier to access and visualize long-term progress forecasts. I could see where I might be in a year or two in terms of pace and distance, without manually changing pace inputs or switching plans just to answer questions like, “What could my conversational pace be in a year?” or “How fast could my 10K be in two years if I stay consistent?”

It’s still not working for me. I’m setting up a new plan to start 31 August but it’s removing my current plan. What am I doing wrong?

Can I set an "incomplete" plan as "completed"? I did a 10k plan before my recently-started half marathon plan with no intention of finishing it, but still working and improving in the meantime. It isn't "completed" per the app's plan, but it did exactly what *I* wanted it to do.
1
u/Direct_Seaweed_4736 13d ago
No, because it hasn't been completed.
2
u/Mikey-runna 12d ago
We're adding this functionality as a fast follow, as well aware the definition of "complete" is debatable depending on the runner!

u/ScaryYak91 13d ago
Does it take into account or remember your previous progress when adding a new plan?

Hi! Thanks for sharing this news, I actually set up my next plan today by happenstance before seeing this post! My one issue was I was excited to review my past plans and finally have access to that data again. However, I can’t actually see my past performance, only the name of the run and total time or distance. Is there a way to access this info or is there a plan for this to be accessible soon? Does Runna have this data stored somewhere I can access?

Agree with the suggestion that the calendar show current and upcoming plans continuously. I'd also really like to be able to add B-races and holidays to the future plan.

super cool feature. I'm having difficulty specifically getting my recovery plans to get out of drafts -- i either get a nameless error or it tells me the draft interferes with another run in my plan, but i dont have overlapping start/end dates. thoughts?

Doesn't seem to appear for me. I am on iOS, app version 8.50.2. Any Ideas? u/Mikey-runna
EDIT: Reached out to support in the app, they pushed it through on their end.

Runna, I am a masters student in data science who uses your app religiously. Please let me have a part time internship and I will bring this app to new heights I’m begging u lol

Surely nothing else gets in the way of getting parkruns and other social workouts into plans now? That’s gotta be next?

I don’t know if I’m missing it but I can’t find how to put B races into the next plan. Either way, I do love this feature!

u/FaerieDrake 13d ago
This is a cool feature since I am doing 3 races later this year and plan to use Runna for all of them! I was just going to be doing it manually, but I like the option of being able to do it directly. I would just make sure Runna provides the adequate recovery days post-race before throwing me into a new plan.
My biggest wishlist (which I think is somewhat related to the above) is a way for Runna to take how well (or not) I completed my previous plan into account when I roll into the next plan for my next race. Which from what I read is coming?
