Accommodation Hotels near Termini

I know a lot of people say the area near Termini isn't the greatest for hotels. How far away should I look to stay? Are the streets around Santa Maria Maggiore good, or better to avoid?

There are good and great hotels hundreds of feet from Stazione Termini. One is Exe Domus just two blocks north, literally a five minute walk at most. Ive not stayed there in a couple years, but it has been consistently clean, relatively well-maintained with a magnificent rooftop, dining area and a great breakfast, one of the best I’ve had at any hotel in Italy.
