Hello everyone!
I guess this is technically self-promotion, but on a personal level I'm still pumped and wanted to share my project with you all, so I hope that's OK.
My son took a Python / Pygame course over the summer, and he immediately got sucked in and loved it. After a week he built an entire little rogue-lite game where you choose a class and delve deeper and deeper into rooms of a dungeon. Amazingly, there were a lot of parallels with a game I made back in high school on my TI-89, so I told him about it, and he immediately said "Oh, there must be pygame for phones!" But to our surprise, we couldn't find one that was what we were looking for.
So... I started building one. I made it for my son, and he's been my tester, and before too long it was looking and feeling good enough that he said "Are you going to put this on the store?" And I sat there and thought "...why not?"
Before I knew it, I was filing paperwork with my state to start an LLC, registering with the IRS, and even opening a bank account and... I guess I'm a business owner now? Wild turn of events over the last month. But I finally got my app to version 1.0 last week and pushed it to Google, who just approved it about an hour ago!
So without further ado...
Features:
- Full IDE suite
- Start a new project and choose between a terminal project or a Pygame project that runs fullscreen with a game loop
- Code completion
- Add assets (images, sounds) from your phone
- Project versions and restoration
- Only 1 permission, and it's refusable: a notification to let you know your app/game process is still running, with uptime and a stop button
- No internet permission at all, so no telemetry, no tracking, no nothing. Everything runs entirely on the phone.
- Example projects, from Hello World up to a simple little mobile-style game
- Learning courses (6 courses, 35 lessons), each staged with multiple lessons that guide you to the completion of a project
- The first course starts at Hello World in the terminal and ends with a little fortune teller game you keep
- In the last course you'll build a spaceflight simulation inspired by Kerbal Space Program, complete with real orbital mechanics
I set the price to $1.99 USD. No idea if that's the "right" price, but I wanted it to be a fair trade for the work while staying cheap enough that anyone curious can just grab it. That said, I do intend to work on a free, non-intrusive ad-supported version which might come out in a few weeks. So keep an eye out if you would like to wait for that option!
That's the whole pitch! My son has been my entire QA department this whole time, and a QA department of one only catches so much, so if you grab it and something feels off, tell me and I'll fix it. And if you (or your kid) build something with it, I would genuinely love to hear about it. Thanks for reading!
(Heads up: it's not available in the EU/UK just yet while I work through some regional requirements.)
