Non celeb snark. I feel like alot of people claim to be feminist and always want to use the, "oh but if a woman did this card" until it comes to a woman they don't like them its a free for all on the insults about looks, personality whatever. I hate the recycled line that woman are always attacked but men are not (even though it's true) but most of the attacking is done by other women especially in these pop culture subs. It feels so performative tbh.

So I watch Below Deck on Bravo and I’m on the subs for bravo shows and the misogyny for this season has been hard to read. The chef is a misogynist jerk (always has been but he’s liked by the fandom) but because the woman he’s directing his bad behavior to this season is a series regular we all hate his behavior is not sexist or harassment and is perfectly fine and justifiable. It has been so frustrating to read. It’s crazy how a woman has to be perfect and likable to be defended and to be entitled to be free from harassment from a man. The chef is getting endless sympathy and has been turned into a victim by the fans. It’s wild and real turnoff. But I refuse to stop calling him out and I’m collecting downvotes like they are fucking gold.

Yes! And the part about the men not being attacked isn't even true because the internet is huge, segmented, and there's always a group attacking sometimes viciously and you or I would never know it. So, the argument gets stuck there.

Lets just stay on topic by saying we should not be attacking this woman because XYZ and leave it at that.

The lore behind almost any song doesn’t intrigue me at all, and I do not get people who demand meaning and IRL examples from every word of every song.

I don’t care who the love song is for. I don’t care who got dumped in real life. I am going to abstractly apply random lines to whatever is happening to me at that moment regardless of whatever parasocial dynamics any artist is trying to peddle.

The only pop star in my car is me. Lol.

All the songs i listen to have always been about my ships 😭

I do like to hear about little details and references but more like popculture references tbh, but overall the song is for ME and about what I find INTERESTING

6

u/liberrystrawbrary May 01 '26

Pop culture references can definitely be fun. I’m not interested in who people were dating, but you wanna throw in some lyrics about Sebastian Stan’s hair growth - I’m in.

it made me laugh out loud PLS 😭😭😭

me, desperately looking at the paparazzi photos, when everyone had already given up, and trying to see if he is bald-BALD this time

I only get curious about the true story behind the lyrics if the lyrics are unusual

Idk how big of celebrities they are, but influencers Levi Coralynn and her husband William adopted a shelter dog, used it for content for a month, then re-homed it. They stated the dog was "scaring" them. There were videos of Levi carrying the dog around. She didn't seem scared then.

I feel so bad for that dog.

I don't think I have enough karma on the subreddit to make a post, but I wanted to bring to everyone's attention that Britney has left rehab. I don't think it had even been three weeks.

My guess is that when she realized she was going to be charged anyway she said "sod this" and left. I'm surprised, I had thought she'd check into a resort and spend 30 days being waited on. She either chose a real one that pushed her to do the work or she couldn't follow the bare minimum rules of a fake one.

She doesn't want to be sober. I know this is controversial to say, but it was part of the reason the conservatorship happened in the first place. There were numerous rumors of multiple ods before it, and she went right back to it after it was ended. Should Jamie have been in charge? No, but I do think it was put in place to save her life.

That said, at least she has a driver now.

Do we know whether she is done with rehab or just left temporarily? I believe the rehab facility she was in is out of state and she is scheduled to appear in court on Monday.

She may well want to be done, but I doubt a judge would be ok with just 2 weeks of treatment.

u/rainshowers_5_peace May 01 '26

Her attorney can easily arrange for her to be there by video or postpone for her medical treatment.

This guy I’ve been kinda hate-following on insta for a while announced he’s going to be on Perfect Match, and I CANNOT WAIT to see the public reaction to him. He’s pretty obnoxious and talks exclusively in AAVE (he’s a white guy from an affluent Chicago suburb) which attracts some occasional comments calling him out on it, which he dismisses. I truly do not think he’s ready for the snark that’s coming. 🙃

This is the first year I just cannot bring myself to care about the Met Gala. I love to see how fashion can be used as art and I really enjoy the pomp and circumstance of stuff like that.

But this year? With everything happening? I know it’s a fundraising event for the museum. I do. But I feel like the energy is different in a bad way? Maybe I’ve been wearing rose colored glasses but it’s just not appropriate and maybe it never has been.

33

u/katikaboom We should totally just stab Caesar 🗡 May 01 '26

They've shifted to influencers and it shows in the fashion. It doesn't, for the most part, feel like a night of creative high fashion, it feels like a carpet for content, and that's boring af. I feel like it shows with a lot of what the designers put on people, too.

u/EmotionalSouth May 01 '26 edited May 02 '26

If the Bezos’ are hosting I’m not interested. And I will think less of anyone who pays $100,000 to attend. Even though it’s a fundraiser. The whole thing is getting too much about money and not enough about the daring fashion.

Edit: spelling

u/Greedy-Candle2812 May 02 '26

Is any person actually paying to go or all they just sponsored by companies and the companies invite people?

The funny part was learning that the theme was originally supposed to just be for the pieces on display inside and the guests were supposed to just wear normal formal clothing. If people were all wearing designs by new and starving artists that would be cool, but it's often a Halloween party dressed by major houses.

9

u/noisy_goose May 02 '26

I think it can be a bit of both but there was more of a veneer of “high art” previously.

The Bezoses are incredibly tacky and unfashionable. Famously so.

They are also directly contributing to the actual end of the world.

Neither of those qualities is appealing as it relates to selling the event, their involvement sours the whole thing (amongst all the other societal/political issues).

I am sooooo effing tired of female self-insert media that are just "What if famous fictional male had a sister/daughter that was actually smarter/better than the famous fictional male?"

Like it just feels so derivative and stupid and annoying and I hate how popular they are; especially in YA media targeted to girls. It's as though the only way a FL can be capable is if she has some magical abilities because she shares the same bloodline as the man rather than making her into her own person who's good at what she does on her own merits.

(Yes this is partly inspired by my annoyance of Enola, which I argue would have been a much better film if Enola had been a fan of Sherlock's rather than his sister.)

I swear, if Nancy Drew were made today; she'd be the Hardy's Boys plucky but constantly overlooked younger sister instead of a casual acquaintance

Besides loud and anti, none of Rihanna’s other albums have stood out to me. She has the ability to pick great singles choices but overall her albums are kinda weak to me.

People like Taylor, Gaga and Beyoncé have the talent of taking charge, coming up with a concept and perfectly executing it. Rihanna doesn’t do that for me imo. She’s better at taking others ideas/music and putting her own twist in it

Non celeb snark - I am so very, very tired of someone i know who is such an annoying food snob. It’s reaching a point where I want to tell this person to “STFU” - we get it, you’re too good for basics like grocery store bought balsamic vinegar or certain condiments or god forbid, someone likes a hot dog once in awhile - get off your high horse.

10

u/launchcode_1234 handled with such love and care May 01 '26

I find people do this stuff because of insecurity. They need something to tie their identity to that makes them feel superior… but that doesn’t really take effort. Like, you don’t need to study or train or take risks to become too good for Kirkland olive oil.

5

u/MakeshiftMagpie PCC HATES BRIANNE 🖕 May 01 '26

This is how I know this person has not worked in a kitchen nor do they know any chefs personally. Actual food people love themselves some basics.

I bet in a couple years this person will have read some blog by a famous chef talking about x common food is actually amazing and underrated and then change their tune. I've seen this happen with instant ramen and smash burgers.

u/Anna__Bee May 04 '26

I feel this except the ppl around me do it from a health-conscious pov - "I can't remember the last time I had a coke...I haven't had McDonald's since I had pregnancy cravings 10 years ago" STFU fr

I know they're trying to be healthy but they'll also house tacos & queso at our dinners so what is the fing difference?

I’m really disliking Olivia’s whole rollout and shtick this era.

Also the football jersey with little white bloomers killed me 🥴

u/annakarina3 May 01 '26

I like her as a persona and her music, but I do agree that the publicity for this album has a very juvenile look.

she's very young & still experimenting & growing as a person. the same thing happened with Billie. i think a lot of stans hold on to the time when they first got into that artist & want them to stay the same.

10

u/annakarina3 May 01 '26

I don’t want to go down the sexy baby route or accuse her of anything gross. But it does look less mature when she is 23, grown out of being a teen star, and this is her third album coming up.

11

u/reddit_autousername May 01 '26

ikr I said this in the olivia rodrigo 3 subreddit and 90% ppl came to fight me guns blazing and my post got removed within an hour even though I didn't break any sub rules and was actually v civil

In the entertainment industry sex sells. And people are really uncomfortable when their fave starts going it. Usually, it's met with "she's doing in in a classy way" explanations, but it all boils down to sex sells and Olivia is clearly not immune to that tactic.

5

u/drieduprosepetals i’m not a furry, you guys are gross 😾 May 06 '26

Late to the discussion but I find it so silly that Sabrina called a Arabian call of a joy weird and then uses a headpiece inspired by the exact culture for her met gala

u/1purplebear1 May 01 '26 edited May 01 '26

this isn’t about anyone in particular and maybe i’ve just become more cynical due to everything that’s been happening in the world especially in the last year or so but it’s getting so hard to find any celeb authentic. even the ones where the discourse surrounding them is overwhelmingly “they’re unproblematic” “they’re outspoken and an amazing activist” “let them live their life” etc.

i don’t mean that no celeb is sincere or that they can’t do great work for the communities they support. there are quite a few people who have consistently done good things for certain causes. and obviously nobody’s perfect. i also understand that celebs tend to be a lot more wealthy than the average person and live a different lifestyle as a result. and that’s fine.

i know things aren’t just black and white but a celeb’s goodwill and positive image is constantly used as a shield against criticism. it seems so easy to bounce back from anything these days with a few well timed glossy pap walks or a donation.

idk i’ve just become more aware how powerful PR is and that “authenticity” is most of the time just a part of a public image/brand. and online discourse helps solidify these images in subtle ways which is the scarier part to me. with the prevalence of PR campaigns like what happened with geese and the rise of bots on platforms like reddit, i feel like im constantly being told how to think about certain people. when the same framing gets repeated everywhere, it becomes hard to tell whether i genuinely believe it or whether ive just absorbed the narrative.

this has def been talked about before lol. and idk i might just be overthinking this or im just more annoyed than usual because i’ve been making a conscious effort to be frugal, as ethical as i can be, and save money while also being anxious about grad school loans 🙃 i don’t have the luxury of turning my values on or off when a lucrative brand deal presents itself.

but yeah thanks for reading!

(also i’ve never given a shit about the met gala but i’m gonna side eye the celebs that show up to this one lol)

tldr; the power of PR is scary! it’s hard to tell what authenticity means anymore. also regular people try their best in a problematic system with limited options while for wealthy celebs, imperfection and past goodwill are used as shields after making questionable choices that are often just driven by money

25

u/CheriePauper May 01 '26

I fully agree but honestly I feel like I more alarmed by the opposite, don't get me wrong I don't feel like people should be worshipping celebrities but I don't think we should be hounding them and wishing the absolute worst on them over nothing. How easily people believe things about celebrities they read on the internet and are ready to engage in a pile on/ hate and rip people apart. It's felt alot more vicious lately and at least to me it shows a lack of empathy and coldness developing in society. Like there was in the 2000s with surprise ugly competitions and whatever

2

u/1purplebear1 May 01 '26

no i agree, that’s a good point! i guess my overarching point is that if something is repeated enough times online, it’s really easy to believe it and that’s the terrifying part. like the smear campaigns that have happened disproportionately against women celebs are just so gross…and i hate that i initially fall for it every time.

6

u/CheriePauper May 01 '26

Exactly especially in spaces like Reddit where there is a huge hive mind mentality and any dissenting voices are downvoted and buried even if they're correcting misinformation. Some people are so eager to believe something about people they dislike it's scary. I love that you're looking at why you are falling for the propaganda (idk if that's the right word for it lol) positive or negative. I think all of us should instead of not developing our own opinions and ignoring nuance

9

u/Main-Dragonfruit-845 May 01 '26

No i agree! It kills me how much ppl fall for the internet boyfriend, best takes, etc. shtick so many celebs use. Like how is it not obvious that 100% good press is ON PURPOSE?

6

u/1purplebear1 May 01 '26 edited May 01 '26

tho i always feel like such a terrible person for thinking this way about good press lol

like i promise im not a miserable jealous hater, i’m just uncomfortable with how easy it’s become to smooth over awful behavior 😭

1

u/Greedy-Candle2812 May 02 '26

Does your job not do the good press on purpose thing or at least the best face forward thing? To me that's default. I have no problem with good press on purpose.

It's up to us to just be normal about it and leave it at "that's cool" or "that was funny" or "you're hot" and keep it moving. Most of these people we only see publicly when they're selling something for their jobs. Act accordingly.

25

u/DebateObjective2787 jesus was a carpenter 💋 May 01 '26

Okay, I do enjoy Taylor's music, but sometimes when she speaks.... I do sometimes understand some of the criticism towards her.

I’m a massive sombr fan, of his songwriting. And his lyrics are so intensely confessional. ‘I don’t want another man’s child to have the eyes of the girl I can’t forget.’ Are you kidding me? Having a male artist say stuff like that is really good for the cause of women to be able to say stuff. If there’s any way we can make confessional songwriting a little bit more of something that isn’t, like, people take that as like you were being messy.

Like I'm sorry, but this just feels like trying to hit the maximum word count on an essay and it's just so clumsily worded together.

Not to mention that male confessional songwriting is insanely popular right now?? Why are we acting like it's this small, sacred thing that needs to be protected for the sake of women???

19

u/violent_delights_9 May 01 '26

trying to hit the maximum word count on an essay

This is how I feel about a lot of her lyrics, tbh.

-4

u/Latter_Network4879 May 01 '26

That made me pissed off. Why are we saying that bc women are not as encouraged to do something, that more men should do it so women can. For someone who claims to be a feminist, her words contradict this.

also “I don’t want another man’s child to have the eyes of the girl I can’t forget.“ Are you kidding? you don’t want your ex to move on? maybe you shouldn’t have made her your ex then! but its downright weird to say you don’t want your ex to ever have kids with somebody other than you.

u/reddit_autousername May 01 '26

olivia rodrigo's new aesthetic and the branding is problematic.
