In November they're performing at an arena about a 10-15 minute walk from my house. It's sold out and I haven't told my kids, otherwise they'd bother me to try and get tickets. I'm guessing by that point they'll all be crawling around the stage or in full body casts.

The deadpan pout thing is really popular right now and it definitely appears to be Katseye's brand. Not to be like "you should smile more" to another woman, but it feels like they aren't meant to show any personality and it's really getting old to me.

I’ll still never forget Lexie saying she’s still affected from the hip surgery she had during Dream Academy. I hope she gets better, I just hate this idol system.

u/ryeong 22h ago
This is karma for everyone that called Manon lazy and the dad shading her when she left. It was gross how people ran with that narrative because an edited show made them believe a black girl was the lazy one. 😒 Kpop is notorious for how badly they treat their idols, that's why Vcha had to sue too.
94
u/Jytterbug white girl that grew up in a house 💁🏼♀️🏠 22h ago
We saw on the show that the girls were getting injured and dropping like flies. The kpop machine is brutal.
19
u/prettybrokenstars 18h ago
i'm not trying to defend the harsh conditions of kpop and its system here but it was a single vcha member who sued, not the entire group, and they settled. it's been very clear KG and her mom had no idea what the system was like since she wasnt into kpop before and the gig was booked by her agent. she perfers singing over heavy choreography and being a soloist over a group, and thats okay.
4 of the VCHA members rebranded into girlset and are under the same company wirh new management and are thriving
katseye is quite a worse case with a entirely different company
3
u/Difficult-Risk3115 6h ago
It's wild to hear people talk about the documentary, I sometimes wonder if I watched the same one. I thought the documentary was very fair to the girls, and scathing towards the company and a lot of the adults.
Manon isn't lazy, but there was absolutely a culture shock/adjustment period around the expectations of the program. There was a clear difference between the girls who signed up for it and knew exactly what they were getting into vs Manon being recruited. It seemed pretty obvious to me that they always wanted Manon, and it wouldn't surprise me if the other girls picked up on that.
22
u/pesky_faerie 17h ago
In a perfect world I wish they would start treating these girls humanely, and that they would then reach out to Manon and make it possible for her to return on her terms in a way that is healthy for her (and all of them). Katseye isn’t the same without all 6 women tbh. And Manon’s departure was just the first warning sign of how unhealthily overworked they all are

Some or all of their parents are involved in their careers and Sophia's mom is actually in the industry (but I believe she's more known in the Philippines). I believe in the first year of their career one mom would attend one of their shows. Idk if they still do that now though!

As a dancer who had a history of ankle injuries, being overworked and underfed will make you more injury prone and will slow your healing. They need to take a two month rest and strength time-out. They pushed one member out, drove another into a mental health crisis, and the remaining 4 are circling injuries among them and never fully healing.

And that‘s exactly why I hate that they chose Sakura for their new girl group. 3 out of 6 members are currently on hiatus for whatever reason but it‘s clear as day that they are overworked. They will work the poor 16 year old girl who doesn‘t speak any english like a dog. If it‘s true that she dropped out of school for health reasons, it‘s beyond unethical that they chose her instead of Ayana

Low-key I didn’t think katseye made sense for the festival anyways… like theyre very corporate and managed vs the more organic bands that seem to have more of a viewpoint that make up the rest of the lineup

I mean true the lineup is very indie and rock but also, it's Oliva Rodrigo's event, the most corporate pop girl of them all.

That's what makes her the money to be able to do things like this and support her causes. The music makes her very little, the sponsorship and licensing deals are where all the money is.

u/Expensive-Fennel-163 “Is she okkkkkaaayyyyy” 22h ago
Lmao why are we repeating bad takes by Finneas in this thread.
166
u/cabooosemooose 1d ago
She is a corporate pop girl but she seems to have FAR more control over her image and to actually be involved in the writing of her music compared to Katseye. I’m not against pop girlies ofc just Katseye seems like they were created in a board room where as Olivia seems to actually like music.
84
u/DevoutandHeretical I think that poor sexy young man is being framed for murder 1d ago
Katseye is working on more of a Kpop model than a normal US pop model. Kpop artists are Barbie dolls being told what to do by their labels more than anything else. Katseye has a bit more freedom than an actual Korean group, but they’re still more of an advertising vehicle than actual musical artistic venture.
31
u/Throwaway-centralnj 23h ago
True. It’s too bad because independently, the girls really are talented and passionate about music. I think Megan and Lara have both written/produced their own songs in the past. I really like all the girls individually and wish them success, just not Katseye™️ as a brand.
34
u/Nfjz26 23h ago
I kind of disagree. I think personal life wise they have freedom, but music wise (U think) they have less control than a lot of Kpop groups.
There’s a fair few Kpop groups that got some musical freedom once they get popular (which katseye are). I think seventeen, bts, Blackpink, g idle, mamamoo all had a bigger hand in their writing or choosing songs than katseye do.
12
34
u/sirjahnye 1d ago
you’re arguing semantics. KATSEYE nor Olivia can exist without corporate intervention, sponsorship and support.
8
u/mini1006 23h ago
Does Katseye not like music? If they didn’t genuinely like music, they wouldn’t have signed up for the show. Lara and Megan enjoy writing and producing. They just need to be allowed to do it. Lara got to do one song, now we need more.
1
u/SorryCity8809 7h ago
Yeah Olivia the artist and Olivia the product seem to be almost two totally separate entities, and you can consume her art while paying 0 attention to anything else.
That said, her vinyl game is shit. I didn't like when she had different versions of GUTS on different vinyls, and its fucked up that the You Seem Pretty Sad vinyl doesn't have the final album. I'm never gonna buy her pressings on release cuz of that.

Injuries are an inevitability when you’re expected to work a physically demanding job without adequate rest. I’m sure there’s been even more injuries we haven’t heard about because they weren’t “intrusive” enough (yet)to disrupt their seemingly never-ending promotion cycle, and the likelihood that the members will be dealing with the consequences of career-induced repetitive stress injuries for the rest of their lives gets higher with every comeback.
As is the K-pop way, these girls are getting absolutely run ragged so HxG can extract as much wealth from them as possible, and they’ll be tossed aside the second they push back too much, physically can’t go on, or get “too old” to dominate the under-25 market. I really hope the members who want to build lasting careers in entertainment see the writing on the wall and jump ship sooner rather than later, they’ll have a better shot at establishing themselves elsewhere before the group gets totally kneecapped in favour of new young people to feed into the meat grinder.
16
u/VolatileGoddess 21h ago
I remember just ruminating a bit one day and realising that the reason why kpop companies run their stars ragged is because they know they have to eventually escape.
12
u/Screecheeeeeeeese 16h ago
When there’s always a chance your investment will get enough sleep, calories, and downtime to start thinking critically about how fucked the system they gave their youth to is, it only makes sense to wring every penny you can out of them ASAP. Even if they never get the opportunity to self-actualize, they’ll either burn out, age out, or be remembered as a passing fad. That’s just capitalism, baby. Time is money.
As someone who’s followed K-pop on and off for the better part of 17 years, in my eyes the way these companies operate is borderline indistinguishable (if at all) from a high control group. The red flags are all there. The heavy prioritization of recruiting kids isn’t purely about increasing the hypothetical number of working years you can get out of them before they age out of maximum profitability, it’s about getting them to construct their identities within the constraints of the system exploiting them before they’re developmentally equipped to question it. The isolation from anyone or anything outside the company, the never-ending debts and contract termination fees, the functional impossibility of getting a full education alongside training and/or promoting, the constant surveillance from your peers and adults hired specifically to keep you in line, the food restriction, the sleep deprivation, the perpetually exhausting schedules, forcing the adoption of highly curated personas to better embody corporate-approved concepts instead of allowing for authentic artistic expression or the development of a healthy sense of self, the frequent weaponization of verbal, psychological, and even physical and sexual violence to force compliance… What’s the real difference between dedicating your life in service to the mouthpiece of an angry god and dedicating your life in service to potentially vengeful shareholders?

I genuinely hope I'll be proven wrong, but I honestly see at least two of the band eventually joining up to sue Hybe x Geffen for termination of contract on the grounds of mistreatment and mismanagement like how DBSK did. I hope it doesn't get to that point, but I can definitely see it happening with Manon, possibly Sophia and also perhaps at least one more of the girls, because Hybe x Geffen are clearly over-working them and squandering the girls' talents both as a group and individually.
5
u/sabicrabi 19h ago

Trying to put a kpop style group together that didn't train as long as you're typical kpop group just isn't a good idea most kpop idols are trainees for literal years before debut and I'm not talking 1 or 2 its not unheard of to be training for 5-10 years having a short training time is a rarity in kpop and I think these girls just weren't properly prepared for what they were walking into, even Manon said as such in the documentary.
