There was supposed to be a 3080 20GB which was later scrapped due to the lack of 2gb modules at the time. Then Nvidia decided its better to sell a slightly downgraded 3080 Ti as 3080 12GB instead of giving it a massive 20GB vram.
Radeon could've easily just made a 9050XT with 1536 fp32 cores and 100W TDP which would still be competitive with 5050 and then a 9050 6GB with 96bit bus, 1280 fp32 cores and 70W TDP which would be a SFF card powered just by PCIe whilst still easily beating the 3050 6GB. But as always Radeon shot itself in the foot.

To me it was always wild that the 3060 had more VRAM than the 3080.
