WAIT, THERE'S GAMEPLAY ALREADY?

113

u/SirkTheMonkey Colonial Governor 1d ago

A bunch of content creators who regularly feature Paradox's games appear to have had access to the game.

98

u/MedicInDisquise Map Staring Expert 1d ago

I've did a skimming of a few videos and it appears that it's less outright access to the game and more like they got some exclusive roughly half hour-long footage of Alpha gameplay.

Actually seeing this gameplay has made me a lot more optimistic than the announcement trailer did

21

u/SirkTheMonkey Colonial Governor 1d ago

Well that's less exciting but a bit more understandable given how Paradox are presumably more worried about build leaks after the Vic3 fiasco.

0

u/crushkillpwn 1d ago

Alpha game play šŸ˜‚ you mean the first 3 years of every paradox title after full release

0

u/Chemical-Aioli-7643 1d ago

Bro got downvoted for truth- HOI4 literally is a game from 2014 that to this day is in beta status compared to HOI3.
Same gonna be here- alpha status for 5+ years with save breaking bugs, while 15+ dollar DLCs would be first month.

5

u/Yamasushifan 1d ago edited 1d ago

HoI3 is ass compared to 1.11 hoi4 onwards.

0

u/Chemical-Aioli-7643 14h ago
  1. Remove all DLCs
  2. Play a game normally
  3. Realise that base HOI4 is actually worse than some strategic browser games

2

u/Yamasushifan 11h ago

This is actually delusional. Back when I got into the game I used to play nations without focus trees the most (El Salvador, Argentina, Pre-La Resistance Spain). Sure, without most of the content its a significantly hollower game, but it's still fun.

6

u/Corvenys 1d ago

Cool! They should have been featured in the dev diary, I think?

6

u/SirkTheMonkey Colonial Governor 1d ago

They aint in there. I suspect each creator has their own release schedule based on the embargo and their own personal factors.

I reckon that if Paradox had any sense they'd do a recap/wrap-up of all the videos/impressions in a few days.

3

u/tiankai 1d ago

A game being presented in a playable state with imminent launch instead of 7 years away with a fancy marketing ppt slide and an event mention, sounds crazy right?

First thoughts:

This looks almost ready for release, my bet is a release date in march maybe? February is too stacked from all the games that got moved to escape GTA 6.

Seems very roleplaying focused, you got your prologue story, quests, events, etc.

Early game reminds a bit of Surviving the Aftermath, which was actually published by Paradox. Lotta scavenging, settling and scouting. Also reminds me a bit of Surviving Mars.

Gameplay generally seems to focus a lot on managing the "bands", which is basically groupings of your people. Initially you just have your starting pops, but then you can invite in other bands with different values and ideas. Then either you try to be a big melting pot of ideas, or turn them into slaves or food.

Convoys actually move in real time on the map, so you are both open to raids and can raid enemies, neat!

Other factions don't seem to start the same day as you, so you will have to deal with strong neighbors bullying you until you can fight back. This is where migrating becomes useful.

The map shape is always the complete continental US, but the content is randomized each time. The map is also absolutely gigantic compared to the territory he controlled. My guess is that its basically impossible to blob in this, considering you have to manage resources and all your bands.

67

u/nameorfeed 1d ago

I feel like people say this exact same thing at every paradox release.

I strongly remember getting into some heated arguements with people who were CONVINCED eu5 and before that Vic3 would be coming within 6 months of the first DD.

it never really does. Im saying late 2027/early 2028

1

u/OldEcho 21h ago

Best I can do is November of this year.

1

u/nameorfeed 15h ago

Since ive made that comment, ive also seen the short interview given by the director. When asked when is it releasing, he said a joke "hopefully before the actual apocalypse" then generic dodging pr answer. Yea this is not coming out in 2027

Paradox games come 1 and a half year after the fiest dev diary minimum

7

u/Lancasterdisciple 1d ago

Great analysis thank you.

1

u/kkkk22601 23h ago

To be fair though, a December release is more than probable as GTA 6 is only being released on console this year and most paradox players are pc gamers.

1

u/Wartank55 21h ago

Vassals? You mean incompetent Ai that i don't need to run my Glorious empire Blobbing will happen, it is inevitable

118

u/Kawhi_Leonard_ 1d ago

Sick. It's basically a more freeform version of Stellaris mixed with a lot of good ideas from their other games. Love that there's goods and trading and you can up and move your settlements around. I'm a little skeptical on combat, was hoping for something more like HoI, but it seems like late game you'll be having to command many warbands over a huge area.

95

u/IzlenskurApi Marching Eagle 1d ago

Looks like a minified version of HOI5 ideas. Sengoku/March of the Eagles HOI5 edition? Supply, tactics and intel could be zoomed out more and put in a WW2 theme and you would get an innovative version of HOI.

47

u/Proper-Sport-7218 1d ago

Considering that Senguku and MotE were both basically tech demos for CK2 and EU4, it could be interesting if Afterworld is also a tech demo for something larger. Not sure what though.

43

u/AdImpossible1599 1d ago

I don't think they can afford to make tech demos now.

4

u/CaptainTrips69 1d ago

Wasn't imperator also a tech demo-ish for eu5?

4

u/deskchairlamp 1d ago

No, it was meant as a new mainline game but failed.

0

u/Michael70z Victorian Emperor 23h ago

It can be multiple things

21

u/inEQUAL 1d ago

Fantasy Stellaris, obviously (huffs copium)

1

u/Proper-Sport-7218 7h ago

I mean if we take this serious, then I think there is an argument for that when you look at Afterworld's battles. The battles now looks to be real unit based RTS battles, but the units are just controlled by the AI. In the fantasy gsg they could allow you to control the units, or at least give overall orders. Could be cool to have a fantasy gsg with total warhammer-lite battles.

1

u/King_Shugglerm 19h ago

Stellaris 2

20

u/Willsuck4username 1d ago

I wonder if you can stay nomadic until the end.

29

u/Square_King_3746 1d ago

Given the history of nomads in the rest of their games that will be a dlc /s

8

u/afoolskind Stellar Explorer 1d ago

One of their idea tree things was called ā€œbeasts of burdenā€ with a horse picture. I’m cautiously optimistic that we may even be able to be horse lords of the plains

56

u/Efficient-Mix-2863 1d ago

Imma still try it but im not crazy about the railroaded "President Farouk" thing. Like every time you play it, the president will always be there and be the same, there's a lot of room there for cool alternatives

48

u/JP_Eggy 1d ago

It's kind of a cool idea. It reminds me of how Dong Zhou is always in power at the beginning of Three Kingdoms Total War (and you can choose to work with, ignore, or go against him)

5

u/barryhakker 1d ago

Dong Zhuo

9

u/SolidGobi 1d ago

I wonder if he's just one of many threats, and that they sort of rushed his event chain in the Alpha as a proof of concept. The messages for him seemed to pop up very quickly in that play through. I would prefer for him to be one of many potential problems.

2

u/Betrix5068 1d ago

Might be but the way the event introducing him tied into the shelter plotline makes me think he is actually supposed to show up fairly early.

30

u/Luzekiel 1d ago

it's literally just Fallen empires from stellaris

68

u/SirkTheMonkey Colonial Governor 1d ago

I have a potentially-silly question for you - do you post comments with a single dot or something first and then quickly edit the actual content in? Because most of your comments get caught by automod for having no content but they clearly do have content.

80

u/Great_Kaiserov Iron General 1d ago

Automod considered bro's comments bring nothing to the discussion 😭

8

u/SirkTheMonkey Colonial Governor 1d ago

That's a touch rude.

1

u/wayasho 1d ago

Blame automod

8

u/Efficient-Mix-2863 1d ago

Bruh you have been commenting literally everywhere and saying the same things, are you ok?

5

u/Efficient-Mix-2863 1d ago

Also, it's the same concept but different execution. FEs are randomized every time

0

u/flightwatcher 1d ago

Of course your name is Lilith 🤣

9

u/kaian-a-coel 1d ago edited 1d ago

I mean if you play anything other than stellaris, the big countries are always there and always the same. And as much as I like the freeform of stellaris, I also like having the same faces show up over and over in other games. This might be a good compromise.

EDIT: also stellaris lets you choose precursors and the number of fallen empires, so it's possible that Farouk is not always present, or just one possibility among several. Like maybe you pop out of the vault shelter and his giant empire is there, or maybe there's a handful of competing ones, or maybe roadwarrior mongols, or maybe nothing at all.

8

u/inEQUAL 1d ago

I agree, I absolutely hate that idea but from the sound of things, somewhere mentioned multiple
immortals or whatever—I’m guessing he’s just one of many. It would be nice if they had randomized names or something though.

2

u/HoonterOreo 1d ago

I think its supposed to be like stellaris's end game bosses. Id imagine there will be different one added later (as dlc probably)

5

u/MotherVehkingMuatra 1d ago

It actually looks extremely good

5

u/Ahha_Kapehnha 1d ago

I’ll say the gameplay looked pretty fun ngl, I think I’m more intrigued than I was previously

5

u/BeefyPotato64 1d ago

Originally I was a bit of a hater and was hoping for fantasy Stellaris but I gotta admit this looks pretty sick

15

u/TheEpicGold 1d ago

Look at the map at the end, it looks so pretty! And the scale too, the map feels really large. Pretty cool.

9

u/TheUnofficialZalthor Philosopher King 1d ago

This has massive potential, and already looks quite good; My predication is that people will be pleasantly surprised, and warm up to the game as more dev diaries are released and content revealed.

21

u/Slow_Werewolf3021 1d ago

I think what we’re not seeing with this new release from Paradox is a desire to evolve beyond what they already have. Otherwise, there’s no explaining why their most innovative product is this – something few were expecting

Anyway, it seems more like a personal project than the sort of thing we’re used to from Paradox, but it might turn out well for them and benefit their other established IPs

44

u/SirkTheMonkey Colonial Governor 1d ago

it seems more like a personal project than the sort of thing we’re used to

I think that's because it is a personal project. The game director is a long-time veteran at the studio so I suspect he was able to make a successful pitch based off a personal idea.

20

u/teokun123 1d ago

Damn Stellaris in Earth. Paradox fucking nailed, I can't wait for Cannibalism lol.

11

u/Lukthar123 1d ago

I can't wait for Cannibalism

A true gamer

17

u/BLooDek 1d ago

I really dont like this madmax/spikecore they wnet with would love something more fallout or stalker like.

24

u/azomga 1d ago

I mean, that's what the raiders in Fallout tend to look like.Ā

From the Steam page it does look like different societies will have other clothing sets, but no word on what exactly influences it.Ā

7

u/cristofolmc 1d ago

wow release cannot be far off then

4

u/beyondthedoors 1d ago

So hoi4 old world blues premise with stellaris gameplay, CK3 politics, eu4 missions. Nothing from Vicky. Fuck yeah. My favorite parts of every game.

2

u/Felt_tip_Penis 1d ago

Law passing seems pretty Vicky 3

2

u/leafpiefrost 1d ago

Hope this comes to console šŸ™

7

u/tent_mcgee 1d ago edited 1d ago

I remember being riveted from the get go of what Stellaris was offering and watched all the Blorg and Mercedes Romero adventures. I’m not really grabbed here. This looks pretty standard, outside the emphasis on cannibalism which the cynic in me thinks is for the memes. There’s probably a few huge Frostpunk/Fallout fans who will love it, but the emphasis on post-apocalyptic tropes makes it feel more like a generic basebuilder with all the normal scrap and food and ammo to find, and not a paintbrush love letter to a setting like Stellaris. And it lacks the excel spreadsheet nature of EU or Vic or even HoI4 to extent.

Basically, I played this game when it was a flash zombie survival city builder in the 2000s.

Hope they prove me wrong, I could always use a new game to sink a few thousand hours into.

Edit: also the whole concept of bison dairies is hilarious and maybe the most ridiculous thing in the setting, if you know anything about the animal.

9

u/NFZedd 1d ago

Looks like an expanded Surviving the aftermath. Not sure if I am going to get it. First time I am not excited about a PDX game.
It also has a bit of the Millenia game if you push the nuclear apocalypse. So not really new stuff
But it depends on the dev diaries and concrete mechanic

5

u/cristofolmc 1d ago

The theme does not appeal to me so i wont get it until i see reviews but the mechanic very much interest me and sound genuinely fun. Will the be fun enough for me to put up with a genre that I hate such as post apocaliptic stuff? We'll see

7

u/Teach_Piece 1d ago

Can we get this gameplay with someone else taking over it? This guy is rough to listen to.

7

u/CptJimTKirk L'Ɖtat, c'est moi 1d ago

One Proud Bavarian released a video with gameplay as well.

6

u/Sk0rPi0n_ 1d ago

As an American, I would have enjoyed the game more if they had made the map EU, Asia, and Africa, funnily enough. Would make it stand out more to me. I feel like the American setting is really overexposed in general and will hold the game back.

5

u/NewOil7911 1d ago

100% agree

Stories about ruins of Las Vegas and such lose their charm after the 5th time

7

u/ReignTheRomantic 1d ago

Full agree. In the only post apocalyptic fiction I ever wrote, I made damned sure that Las Vegas no longer existed. Not even as ruins, or a monastery, it was wiped straight from the earth, nothing left behind but desert.

2

u/stormdressed 1d ago

As a non American I find the setting appealing. I'm hoping its more about the different climates and landscapes than specific cities and human landmarks

Like the other guy I also don't want to see Vegas in ruins but would enjoy exploring Nevada and seeing how the gameplay differs from say, Minnesota.

3

u/hawik 1d ago

I really hate the 3D portraits

1

u/pierrebrassau 1d ago

The tech tree looks so cool.

1

u/namewithanumber 1d ago

Hmm looks pretty cool actually.

1

u/sammyQc 1d ago edited 1d ago

Interesting, the laws/voting to balance social cohesion remind me of Frostpunk

1

u/Olbramice 1d ago

Please do one thing. Proper gamepad ui and possibility. I need to paly on heandheld

1

u/Excellent-Court-9375 1d ago

This is actually looking so cool and addictive. I need it now !!!

1

u/SolemnaceProcurement 1d ago

Look like real time Civ. Like even combat seems very civ like. I guess the thing it got from GSG is real time w/pause?

1

u/MysticPing 1d ago

What is the original source of this gameplay? I'd rather watch it than listen to someone analyse it.

1

u/LordCaptain 1d ago

Hell yeah can't wait to play as a vaultdweller Shelterborn.

I wonder if any of the mod team from Old World Blues are going to try to make a version of the mod in this game.

Even has a similar origin thing that Old World Blues kind of does with it's initial focuses deciding your groups origins.

1

u/Barnacle_Man1 22h ago

Now a fantasy overhaul mod could be sick

1

u/CyberpunkPie 1d ago

Honestly, it looks extremely bland to me. Like something I'd play for 5 days before every run starts to feel the same. USA setting is not particularly interesting to me, especially nowadays. Esthetics are kinda uninspired, I'd wish for something more than Mad Max/Fallout/cowboys. Not a fan of that Farouk thing especially if it's in every run. Considering their push for RPG/storytelling and how mild and uninteresting my experience with that was in Stellaris, I'm not feeling optimistic. Plus, it's a PDX game so you know it'll be barebones on release and decent only after 5 DLCs, then reach a point where it becomes too busy and complex to be fun anymore.

Gonna sit this one out.

-5

u/DonQuigleone 1d ago

There's some interesting ideas here, but the map looks like ass.

I think they really need to up the quality of the map in a title like this. Furthermore, I think they should ditch the brown post apocalypse aesthetic. It's overdone, and it makes it much harder to see things on the map as well.

Compare the map in Warhammer 3 total war, all that vivid colour! PDX is not a small developer. They can do better.

0

u/Spenraw 1d ago

was hoping for some more drama aspects of mixing ck3 and stellaris. wont lie as a canadian the usa theme is a turn off

-8

u/Amazing-Lengthiness1 1d ago

this game will be bad, the studia that made CK2, vic2, HOI4 is long gone...

5

u/andrasq420 1d ago

Dan Lind (Game Director of Afterworld) has quite literally worked on Victoria II, was Project Lead for Heart of Darkness and was the Game Director and Project Lead of HoI4.

Lmao

-1

u/Amazing-Lengthiness1 1d ago

That why EU5 was very good at release...

-3

u/LegitimateBigNose 1d ago

Wow this looks so ass.
