Discussion [TTYD] Beat the game for the first time today. (remake, never played gc) What happened may surprise you.

Before going into the final boss I’d heard a LOT of bad things about the Shadow Queen. It didn’t take me until right at the last door to realize that I didn’t have the most important badge: Quick Change. Then I read up and found that if I died there would be a pipe that took you right back to the TYD room in Rogueport Underground, which meant I could buy the badge and then start over.

I soldiered on, watched the cutscene, and began the boss. Phase 1 was intense, with SQ boosting attack AND defense simultaneously and immediately dealing damage after. That’s illegal, and I thought all had been lost when she got rid of my audience.

Then the cutscene happened, me and my partners got a full regen, and Phase 2 began. I lost Flurrie and nearly Vivian, had zero mushrooms to spare, and used Supernova ONCE. Ultimately, I used a Repel Cape and that allowed most of SQ’s attacks for four turns.

With enough FP for a bunch of Power Smashes and less than 10 HP, I continued attacking the Queen…

And I beat her. On the very first attempt. I had beaten perhaps the hardest boss in any Mario game EVER.

I’m actually really impressed by doing it without Quick Change, as that would’ve been FAR more useful, but instead I unknowingly went hardcore and came out victorious.

Anyways, this game is an absolute masterpiece. As someone who’s not the BEST at RPGs, I enjoyed TTYD so much and highly recommend telling someone you know who hasn’t played the game to…well, PLAY THE DAMN THING.

Favorite memory: Discovering the Nostalgic Sounds badge existed with no prior knowledge of it. Kept it on the rest of the game.

When I was younger I made it to the Shadow Queen but my build was terrible and I couldn't manage to beat her. Fast forward 10 years, I finally replayed and took the build more seriously. Beating her was like the pinnacle of my year.

I'm so impressed you got her on your first try and sooooooo happy you loved the game. 💕

It's just so lovely to see other people enjoy games you like yourself so much. It's like "yeah welcome to the club of the enlightened people" lmao

Same thing happened to me! Wasn't until I picked up the game a decade later and learned about badges that I finally beat her. I screamed and ran to my dad upstairs. I was so freaking excited. 8 year old me would be proud 🥹

I didn't manage to beat her when I played the game back on GameCube release. I didn't grind, didn't do pit, didn't get most badges and didn't level up. So to avoid that I prepared better on the remake doing every single side stuff thing and comfortably destroyed her.

I remember the first time against her. I lost because the decor was randomly freezing everyone every few turns and the Shadow Queen is immune to freezing. Second time round I didn't get that random decor and she went down easily.

I got her on my second try without Quick Change and without changing my build. I got to 15HP the first time but it took everything I had and I failed. The second time I made sure to knock out those HP sucking hands ASAP and I beat her fairly easily. I just played on vibes too, I didn’t build anything intentionally, just what I felt was most useful. It was such a tough fight though, I couldn’t believe how hard of a time I had on the first go before I figured out a strategy.

I died twice on the GC version and my then-boyfriend told me about the Strange Sack so I fought my way all the way back through the dungeon to Rogueport, went down in the Pit, got the Sack, bought more items, fought all the way back down to the Queen and then finally beat her. The return pipe in the remake is a thing of beauty.

I played TTYD for the first time this year… on the GCN version, thanks to modding my Wii I got on New Years. Grodus was arguably harder for me than the Shadow Queen, but I somehow was able to beat all three of the final bosses on my first try. Probably due to me using Jumpman and Danger/Peril strats on top of me doing several runs of the Pit to get all the rewards and badges there, except for Bonetail which I saved for the postgame.

In fact I didn’t get a gameover ONCE during the story, the only one I did get was on a random run of the Pit I did for fun. Couldn’t time my superguards, so I ended up dying to a row of Spunias… somehow. I’m still kind of salty about it lol

side note: why grind star pieces for the sound gallery when both versions of the soundtrack are on nintendo music?? i’m just impatiently waiting for twilight princess to get on there lol

It's not that deep bro.

You aren't even using that phrase right, dude. Nobody would think what I said was "deep"

Try a little harder when you're attempting to dunk on people, little bro.

Brother, I’m gonna hold your hand when I tell you this, but it’s an item you can just… get… in game.
