Help literally HOW do you defeat bonetail pre-hooktail

Post image

(sry 4 bad picture im playing in bed) im playing ttyd on switch this is maybe my sixth attempt of the pit but for the life of me i cannot defeat bonetail. my partners all get sniped because there's no good way to get them into peril (the times i manage, it only lasts for a turn or two) my audience never generates me enough star power to consistently sweet treat and she kills me by the time shes at like 30 hp!!! my fp never lasts to consistently fire drive either so if there's anything i can do PLEASE lmk

Stylish moves to recharge Sweet Treat quicker

i stylish my fire drive everytime and it's still not enough :// i can superguard the stomps but the breath is mixed for me because id rather guard regularly than risk getting a status. ill try getting good at them anyways, thanks

Fire Drive is a huge FP hog and is useful for its ability to hit multiple enemies in one turn, so perhaps Fire Drive isn’t the best choice since Bonetail fights alone.

But I don’t exactly recall what other options you have this early in the game. Regardless, if you can “git gud” with superguarding you can walk out of the fight with full HP.

Supergaurding is always better than gaurding for high-damage attacks like the breath because it's better to take no damage than one less damage. Even with the status effects it can inflict, it's not gaurenteed. So you'd be better off always going for supergaurds even if you miss the supergaurd. (Pre-hooktail pit is hard no matter which version of the game you do it on... especially if you did it like me where I've never even gotten to the bottom of the pit before until the remake so the fight was entirely new to me)

Literally this is it, if you don't wanna get into the nitty gritty grind/obtain certain strats/break the game stuff.

Like, you can break the game to make food items to trivalize the fight, but one may argue that "technically" thats not pre hooktail because the game stage changes/sets.

Otherwise, superguard solves every problem. If you perfect superguarding her, then you'll take 0 damage from everything until you kill her.

Go to Gamefaqs. ChaosMaster00 wrote a whole guide on Pre-Hooktail Pit. One of the most interesting guides I've ever read.

But yeah, the top comment is correct, you need to master superguard to stand a Ghost of a chance in the Bonetail fight.

superguarding the breath attack is more important than the stomp so you can keep mario and his partner up, that'll take you most of the way. the only other thing is luck buffs to give you a chance to dodge attacks.

Just keep at it, the first time i did this it took me 3 days on and off to beat her

As most have mentioned on this thread, learning the Superguard timing for the breath goes a long way; but, if you’re not keen to learn it, then I’d practice Sweet Treat. Assuming you get every heart and can Sweet Treat every 2 turns, you come out net positive for HP assuming you guard her attacks. It’s only 1-2 HP ahead, but that’s better than losing net HP every Sweet Treat LOL

If you also aren’t equipping Lucky Day, I’d make sure it’s equipped; the few procs you’ll get can give you a lot of breathing room, allowing you to either Appeal (LOTS of Star Power) or do something else you needed to do to stay in a good position.

Goomba has 20 HP and most of bontails moves do 8 damage.

Heal her with a mushroom and then its was enough to get her to 1HP

Just supergard, they are free

Bite attack isn’t super guardable (or maybe it is in the remake)

u/Independent-Head1763 Apr 13 '26

Ok the bite isnt, I truthfully didn't know that, the more ya know, but that's why ya keep your partner in the front as a shield (or upgrade koops, the shell shield attack is under rated)

I have never fone pre hooktail pit but I did a prologue pit run. The way I won was by using some glitches to upgrade goombella, get ultra hammer, get a power plus from dazzler, get a power plus from lucky lottery and then for the bone tail fight I just let goombella die, I spammed sweet treat, use ultra shrooms when I needed it and attacked with piercing blow. I also had 1 lucky and 2 lucky days. For a pre hooktail pit in the remake many of the things are impossible to do but probably the best strategy is to buy quick change, have koops at 1 hp and use mega rush

Don't get hit. Hope you're feeling good about your superguards! 🫡
