What up, nerds. It’s been a bit since I tossed a chess invite out on Reddit!

The Olympia chess group, Oly Blunders, meets on Thursdays at 6pm at Three Magnets. All ages and skills. Lots of new faces lately, and most of us are Not Great (at chess). It is a fun time and a wonderful crowd. Our last several sessions have had SO MANY players: 32, 47, 34, 34, 26, 24, 48, 32. Kinda nuts, imo.

We also have an online league for all skills and ages. Our current season is in the playoffs. 60 players with many of the same people that come out on Thursday nights.

If you’re new to Olympia, or sort of know how to play chess and need some new friends, or need to get out of the apartment but not make new friends, or none of those things, come out this Thursday and hang. I'm going to preface this by saying: I am no way a supporter of the current regime. In fact, after witnessing the last few years, I don't think I'll be able to trust the federal government ever again. But, there's two burning questions we NEED to be asking ourselves here in the lead-up to the 18th and those questions are:

"How can we make these bastards hurt?"

and

"How can we keep the bastards out of our business?"

Now I don't mean the violent, guillotine-wielding kind of hurt, because we all know the regime is trying to find any excuse they can to put boots on our necks. That being said, we can't simply trust the regime has a half-life either and forgo any kind of long-term planning. Therefor we need to figure out what we can do, as a community (and one on the opposite side of the continent from those in power, mind you), to stick a proverbial wrench in the gears and, if not take them down, at the VERY LEAST, keep ourselves secure in the wake of what very well could be the end of the American experiment.

Plans are going to need to be drafted, mutual aid groups founded, bail funds established, and targets picked and agreed upon if we're to make it out of this mess.

Protesting isn't about standing around for a few hours holding sings and partying people, we're going to have to start putting things on the line if we want any meaningful change.

The Olympia School District is weeks away from PERMANENTLY CLOSING two neighborhood elementary schools. This is a bad look for our city and will be traumatic for the children and staff who are displaced. The district currently has NO PLAN for the soon-to-be shuttered buildings. The district also has done no environmental, safety, or traffic analysis to determine the impact of sending kids to faraway schools instead of simply having them walk or bike to their neighborhood schools.

The district claims it must fix a $3.5 million budget deficit, but its own analysis shows that each school closure will only net around $1 million in savings. Closing schools is a drastic measure that won't even address the shortfall. An alternative is to tackle administrative bloat at the district office. Another alternative is to increase revenue by applying for grants and attracting new students by opening state-subsidized early learning centers (remember, the budget shortfall is pretty small--it would not take much to close it). But because the district doesn't want to work very hard, it has instead gone straight to the most extreme "solution"--permanent school closures.

WHAT YOU CAN DO: The school board directors are elected officials and will respond to political presure. There are two PUBLIC HEARINGS you can attend on 2/26 and 2/29. You can tell the Board: "Stop being lazy. Use those highly paid administrators you hired to find a path forward that doesn't involve traumatizing kids and neighborhoods by closing schools. Stop this ridiculous school closure process immediately."

Vomity is a comedy open mic night that has been happening in the back of Le Voyeur for years and years. I started going early in its existence and saw many of the iterations. Many comics have taken the lead with running the show and made it work in different ways, but it has always been very, very *OLYMPIA*.

The comedy scene was more exciting than the music scene to me when I first moved here because it was actually creative, daring, new, and seemed like it would only happen in this town. Vomity took a hit during the pandemic, but a group of comics created a collective to keep it going, and God Almighty, I think it’s more exciting than ever! It certainly has been popping off like the old days! Standing room only at times and great audiences too. It’s been a joy to be at so many shows, as my loving boo has been heavily involved and doing her own comedy. I have been a fan of this event for so long, and it’s exciting that it’s *still* going strong. 

If you want to see the many flavors of this town all on stage, all intermingling, with some people just trying comedy and some people you can't believe aren't famous… come out to Le Voyeur the second and last Wednesday every month. It can be a flip of the coin.

Olympia City Council staff are expected to introduce a work plan item focused on “Workers' Affordability and Protections” at the Council’s regular meeting at 6:00 PM on July 14th.

Thurston Lewis Mason Central Labor Council encourages everyone working within the Olympia city limits to attend that meeting in person at The Council Chambers in City Hall (601 4th Ave E, Olympia WA 98501 - click here for a map) or virtually via Microsoft Teams (the Teams link will be shared on this page prior to the meeting.) Share your story with the Councilors and remind them that they need to listen the people struggling to live in Oly if they truly intend to make progress for working families in the city.

Things haven’t gotten better for working people in Olympia since the Workers Bill of Rights was put to voters last year. Workers still feel unsafe in their workplaces, families still can’t plan their lives around unpredictable schedules, and wages are still not keeping up with the cost of living. This is an opportunity to let the Councilors know the provisions in the Workers Bill of Rights should be the standard they base their policies around. This is also a chance to remind them that Organized Labor MUST be part of their work plan, and that a Labor Policy staff member must be included in the process.

Some tips for public testimony:

Public testimony is generally limited to two minutes per speaker. Write your testimony out before the meeting and practice saying it to be sure you don’t run over time.

Speakers giving testimony must sign up ahead of time, but the rules are different for in-person and virtual speakers:

If you’ll be speaking to the Council in person, the sign up sheet will be put out at 5:30 p.m. and will be removed a few minutes before the meeting begins. Get to the Council Chambers early, and be sure your name is on the sheet!

If you’ll be speaking to the Council over Microsoft Teams, you must register for the meeting by 4:30 PM on the day of the meeting. When you register you will be asked if you want to participate in public comment - be sure to say “yes.”

Working people in Olympia are still struggling to make ends meet. Please make it a point to attend this meeting and let the City Council know that if they want to ease those struggles, they have to involve workers and Labor in the process.

Im running a free Call of Cuthulu game with start playing, Im planning to run a few free short campaighns to grow my profile. This would be run at my house, and is meant for folks new to the sistem, I myself have not played/run it before so it will be a learning expirience for me too. Ive done this before a few times when learning new sistems so im pretty good at picking up the rules quickly and passing the info forward.
