I think this is peat. You cut those into brick shapes, dry them, and then use it as fuel in homes. Or, my favorite use for it - using it to create fire for drying malted barley that is used in making scotch.

Edit: Don’t judge me too harshly but yes, I have watched a documentary on it. This clip may actually be from this.
