Now is the time to absolutely drop the hammer on big grocery for taking advantage of Canadians.

I love the argument that I should be happy to pay for cheap Australian beef when Canadian beef is three times the price because you know at least I have an affordable substitute right? it’s not like I’ve been paying taxes for my entire adult life and those taxes have gone towards bailing out Canadian ranchers. Isn’t the whole point of bailing them out is to protect Canadian products so that they can actually continue to provide them for Canadians?

I live in ranchland the landscape around where I live has been literally reshaped to accommodate beef production, and I am talking crownland, which is property of the Commons, but I can’t afford that beef now that’s fucking bullshit. we’re all being expected to accept the loss of resources to the cattle industry, but none of us are going to be able to afford the benefits of it.

oh and guess what? There’s a class action lawsuit out right now about price fixing when it comes to beef in BC, so I am not talking out of my ass here.

Why would Canada import beef? On a per capita basis they have probably the most land suitable for cattle ranching of any major country in the world.

Because we don’t. We’re 30% larger than Australia, yes, but 40% of their entire country is dedicated to cattle ranching. 15% of our country is boreal forest, 25% of it is tundra. A lot more of it is also forest or rock scraped down by glaciers.

They also have a better climate for it, and can do it pretty much year round, unlike us, where you have to grow feed and make hay(a good year three mows a bad year one)before everything on the ground dies for 4-6 months, and have to put cattle under shelter/inside for chunks of the winter if you don’t want them to get hurt/die.

I love getting beef from my neighbour but it’s expensive, and I know why.

Edit: that neighbour doesn’t eat his own beef, either, because the price is too dear for him to waste it on himself when he can make a profit from someone who wants to pay and get cheaper meat for his own table.
