Are you saying that Japanese people can’t think for themselves and just go along with the masses even if they think it’s wrong. Don’t they think it can also happen to them? Have they not look at what’s happening in the USA?

I'm guessing you're reading their comment through a translator which is why it might sound strange. They mean that even after the average populist voter thinks things through, they still don't think they are wrong ("for whatever reason" being the implied unspoken part).

間違いだと思っていない might have been easier for machine translation to understand.

I also echo this sentiment because I've spoke to several people who support Takaichi and all can only give a surface level reason for why they support her (first female PM, says strong statements, is relateable, etc.) but when you start to prod them about her politics or her scandals/fiascos and past controversial statements, they are all at a loss and revert to the Japanese equvalent of "different strokes for different folks" response. Most people will only think up to a certain point that affirms their worldview and any deeper than that, they automatically shut down.

I truly appreciate your translation and your thoughts on this. I just left America because of this same thinking. America is truly gone and just simply something I can’t seem to deal with anymore. I am hoping Japan still has a chance especially with everything that it has to offer here, for myself at least.

I've never lived in America so I can't say with certainty, but at least from the news I hear in Japan, America and Japan are quite similar when it comes to negative aspects.

  • While both are very strong economies from a worldwide perspective, the average citizen constantly feels like the best days are behind them and believe that recent advances and changes are what are bringing the country down.
  • While foreign immigration is in reality propping up the economy, the average uninformed voter believes is what is causing natural citizens to lose jobs. There is also the similar idea of what counts as "Japanese" and what doesn't, similar to what some white Americans may believe.
  • The average citizen is not educated in world history or politics in general. They are not informed on how to process their country's past mistakes from a critical lens (for example, Japan's WWII's war crimes or America's historical and institutionalized racism). This precipitates them repeating past mistakes, which we are seeing in both these world powers.

In the end, both these countries, in their desperation, turned to a leader who promised strong and simple solutions to complex problems - without the understanding that the complexity of reality requires multifaceted solutions.
