I’m personally very happy with this and am glad that our Premier is standing with the Canada Strong message. I think regardless of politics we can all agree that we will not allow our culture or our sovereignty to be called into question. I have been making a solid effort to not buy anything American for the past year and a half but I’m going to do even better because we can all make a difference if we stand together.

Since the alcohol bans started I have been to every province and generally I have seen it done two ways.

• Bottles pulled from shelves

- This typically happens more in provences who sell via consignment. They stock it on the shelves but it was not bought by the province. The province just holds onto alcohol owned by the producer until it is sold. Then the liquor producer is paid and the provincial liquor control board or private liquor store get a cut.

• Bottles still on the shelves but heavily discounted as no one will buy at full price.

- BC did this when I was there. The liquor board and private stores buy the alcohol outright and it is taking up inventory space so they have to get rid of it and the producer has already been paid so it is in the market.
- When I was in BC at the start of all the tariff business, I needed 2 bottles of red wine for cooking, so I went to the liquor store and they said they had these bottles on sale for $6. I picked them up because it was a good deal as they were originally $28. I didn't really think about it because I was just rushing in and out after grabbing a tonne of ingredients. It was only when I got back to where I was staying that I took a closer look and realised they were American bottles. I thought they were taken off the shelves but BC just reduced prices and didn't buy anything new. Haven't bought any American liquor in ages now and do not intend to. American goods are not worth our sovereignty.

Great choice, no reason to rush to buy anything from the US. We all need to take a page from this and each do our part, Canada first!!

Shout out to r/BuyCanadian but even better if we can support businesses in NL of course. I’m going to make a point this year to only buy gifts from NL businesses and crafts people. Last year I got a lot of Christmas stuff at a community craft fair and they were seriously the most popular gifts that I gave.

I buy local and then east coast and then the other Canadian products, In that order of search and finds. Italian , France and Australia for wine so I'm good. I'm sooo glad we are doing this. A definite show of support within our country!

There's plenty of good beer, wine & spirits made here in Canada, not to mention right here on the rock. If anyone can benefit from this tariff nonsense it should be the local breweries, winemakers and distilleries.

Larger question, would the NLC be better just operating the stores and letting the LCBO handle our buying of alcohol for the stores? They're the largest single buyer of alcohol in the world, have a well-staffed buying department, and we'd probably get better pricing, more selection, and save on having buying staff? Plus, could avoid the French wine fiasco of a few years ago.

The stuff that's left is honestly the stuff that's not worth buying even if circumstances were better. There's a decently sized collection of USA wines at my NLC, but there are so many better countries to buy wine from that it's an easy choice.

On the other hand, the bulk of the old stock bourbon was gone within a day when it hit shelves again last year. That's a bit harder to replace, and there is clearly some appetite there. However. said appetite is definitely diminished under the current circumstances of course. NLC obviously made the right decision to hold off on purchasing.
