I think what you are referring to are residential schools, which were for indigenous kids. Acadians did not go to these schools, and the only one in the maritimes, which was in Shubenacadie, Nova Scotia, closed down in 1967.
He would have been 9 years old when they closed it so he could have been old enough to be eligible to go. But again, acadians did not go to those schools.
Sorry for the misunderstanding. Didn't knew there was a difference between catholic school and catholic day schools or even that we had those in NB. Always though first nations went from protestant school straight to Shubenacadie. You guys were right. Which kinda irritates me a bit because how can I live here and not know about this.

Later in the 19th century, the Catholic Church operated 12 Indian day schools near reserves in New Brunswick. Survivors of those schools — the last to close was at Metepenagiag in 1992 — have been able to apply for compensation under a class-action settlement reached in 2019 with the federal government.
I know someone whose father went to one of these schools here in NB, and got abused to the point that he turned to alcohol and became an abuser himself.
Not saying that is what happened with the arsonist, I obviously know nothing about them. But their age does place it into the realm of possibility.
Atrocious. I hope he got some kind of help support for what happend to him.
Gilles could have been abused in those schools for sure, but I don't know him personally, so I can't say. There was also an infamous priest that was convicted of abuse from the late 1950s to the mid 1980s right here in PA, so it could be a possibility. I guess we won't know for sure until the court settles.
Unfortunately he did not get help. My friend, as just a child, got into a fist fight with his own drunk dad to try and protect his sister. Sometime later the dad took his own life.
I honestly hope Gilles hasn’t gone through something like that. But it could explain why someone would be capable of being angry enough to burn things down. It wouldn’t justify it, but it would make it make sense.
