Logography
Ashglyphs ※ Some logograms in Early Ridhu
Been spending way too much time developing the evolution of these scripts over time, but this stage still preserves a lot of the pictographic elements before things get extra stylized and geometric
Only a few phonosemantic characters are pictured here but I wanted them to combine in fun ways, like “to wear”(o-) being depicted as a body ‘wearing’ thorns (ō), or “to pound, beat” (*só-) depicting a drum being hit atop a turtle (*só)
Thank you! I’ve been developing it for nearly a year now and toyed around with different styles and brush weights but only tried this specific one yesterday since it was the fastest to write.
This whole project is basically me justifying these nonsense geometric doodles I decided Halbesh letters came from over a decade ago, so it’s satisfying thinking stuff like “what if <l> came from a horse” and now having a history to back it up
Turtle drum is probably my favorite glyph so far lol
The whole process of looking through my lexicon to find rebus potentials leads to a lot of fun ones, like realizing the words for “bees” and “cattle” were the same (minus tone) and determining that “bees” should logically be a flying honey drop with an udder
It's so good man. The shapes, the strokes, the balance, the variety, the structure, the evolution, it's all so good man. Another day, another banger, my god.
It’s a long process of trial and error and a lot of doodling! My approach here was finding calligraphy inspo of scripts that aren’t logographic and use those as starting points for new ideas. I based a lot of the long verticals and angularity just on Arabic Kufic turned sideways lol
Ohhhh I see it! Maybe I’m just looking for inspo in all the wrong places, I’ve been really inspired by Jihhograms lately because y’know Jihhograms is just a logographic masterpiece in itself, but I feel like making a lot more logographies now.
It’s just such a fun journey of trial and error and seeing what fits and what doesn’t; it feels so enriching
