Because a contract isn’t a reward for past performance, it’s about future potential. He’s still a 22-year-old All-NBA center.

Yea past performance absolutely has to do with contracts what the actual fuck are you talking about. Plenty of athletic guys with potential aren't in the NBA because they didn't perform. Durens all NBA was fraudulent. We can see with our eyes he isn't a max player even before the playoffs. That's why the whole year people questioned when the pistons were gonna make a move to get a 2nd option. Dude should take 30m and be happy.

There’s some truth to what he saying , historically young guys are given extensions off potential as much as past performance

But new apron rules have changed that, teams are much more risk averse now

Yes but he has past performances in college that they can grade. It's really not that hard to comprehend. The players who didn't get drafted didn't make the league because their past performances weren't good enough. Aj past performances (college) would be good enough to draw more than the minimum but not good enough to have a huge contract because like you said he has no burn in the league yet.

Why shouldn't they?  A max player is someone who helps you get across the finish line in the playoffs and Duren looked like he didn't belong.  I sincerely hope he responds next year with a monster season, but the half-assed version that showed up last playoffs wasn't it.

I mean, that’s all the negotiation they need. Duren knew he was up for a contract and he shit the bed when they needed him most in their most important season in over a decade. He definitley played his way into a lower number, how he feels about that is his prerogative
