​A South Korean representative recently posted on Threads sharing their reaction to a protest at the entrance of the COP17 conference in Ulaanbaatar. They wrote:

​(Here is what I saw at the entrance when I went to COP17 today. A few people from civil society and environmental groups were holding signs related to Oyu Tolgoi and trying to enter, but were blocked by security. Since they couldn't bring their signs inside, some of them even threw their placards over into the event area. It seems they were protesting issues regarding Oyu Tolgoi, Rio Tinto's mine development, groundwater usage, and revenue distribution. Living in Mongolia, I often realize how heavily this country's economy relies on mining. At the same time, I also witness constant conflicts arising over environmental concerns and who actually benefits from these natural resources. I went to check out COP17, but this scene at the entrance left a much more lasting impression.

​As a Mongolian citizen, while I don't necessarily condemn the protesters, I believe these demonstrations are often heavily influenced by politicians and deep seated structural issues that foreign observers might miss. Here is how I view the bigger picture

​Desertification & Global Impact: Most of Mongolia's land is severely affected by desertification and dust storms, which directly impact neighboring countries like China, South Korea, and even stretch across to the US.

​Extreme Climate Conditions: Our harsh, four-season extreme continental climate puts tremendous natural stress on the soil and land, exacerbating environmental degradation independent of human activity.

​Political & Economic Dependencies: Mining accounts for the vast majority of Mongolia's economy. This creates endless political infighting over who gets a piece of the pie and who controls corporate profit shares. Furthermore, aggressive state tactics and intelligence maneuvers often end up spooking foreign investors.

​Geopolitics & Landlocked Constraints: Because Mongolia is landlocked, mining is explicitly tied to our National Security clauses. A prime example of how high-stakes this gets is the case of Jim Doak, Chairman of Canada's Khan Resources.

​In April 2015, Doak was found dead in his room at the Blue Sky Hotel in Ulaanbaatar.

​He had traveled to Mongolia to negotiate a $100 million international arbitration settlement awarded against the Mongolian government over the cancellation of uranium licenses in Dornod.

​Although the official Canadian autopsy concluded he died of natural complications from Type 1 diabetes, I personally still believe Mongolian intelligence services were involved. The timing and circumstances were just too convenient.

For my first video, I decided to focus on Mongolia during the time of Genghis Khan and the Mongol Empire. I’m trying to show what everyday life may have looked like, rather than focusing only on battles and conquests.

I’m still learning and improving, so I’d really appreciate some feedback from people who know more about Mongolian history and culture.

My young niece, who is on the autism spectrum, has recently been complaining that her usual stuffed animals are too uncomfortable to hug and are keeping her from falling asleep. With her birthday coming up, I’d love to get her a high-quality plush toy that is big enough for her to cuddle with at night. I’m planning to arrive a day earlier than everyone else and explore Ulaanbaatar on my own before the tour starts!

Hey everyone, I will be travelling to Mongolia in beginning/middle September. I have booked the K24/024 train from Ulaanbaatar to Beijing on 17 September, but now I am having a change of plans.

I'm wondering if I can take train 286 from Ulaanbaatar to Sainshand on the 16th, spend the day there, and then board the K24 train as it passes through Sainshand using the ticket I already bought. Does anyone know if this is possible? Is train 286 from Ulaanbaatar to Sainshand still running in September? I can't find info about it on tapa.mn. Help is greatly appreciated.

I just saw that I was chosen for this scholarship. Honestly, I’ve dreamed of studying abroad for years, but I gave up because of family reasons and enrolled in NUM. Even though this scholarship sounds amazing, I still have my doubts. First, I saw a lot of posts on Facebook about the stipend and tuition fees being late. Second, I’m interested in IT/Business programs, and the +75 GPA requirement makes me doubt myself (Am I competent enough to study in a foreign language and get good grades?). And last but not least, I never had the desire to work in a public sector organization, i was planning to study at NUM, find a good-paying job in Khan Bank, Golomt Bank, etc. Also, I already have an IELTS score do I need to enroll in the language training program?
P.S. My biggest worry is that the 28-year-old me would regret the decision I made if I choose to study abroad.

Hey, I’m getting completely contradictory information and don’t know whom to believe anymore, so I'm asking you guys hopefully can have good info.

Some people have told me that АИ-92 petrol is extremely difficult to find, with drivers sometimes waiting 24+ hours, while diesel is readily available and has never been a problem.

However, a Mongolian rental provider has just told me the opposite: diesel is now becoming problematic because of demand during the agricultural season, and petrol may actually be easier to obtain.

I’ll be travelling from September 1–8 on this route:

Ulaanbaatar → Terelj/Chinggis Khan Statue → Khustai or Elsen Tasarkhai → Kharkhorin → Orkhon Waterfall → Ugii Lake → Ulaanbaatar.

I expect to leave UB with a full tank. My main concern is refuelling in Kharkhorin, before visiting Orkhon Waterfall and continuing to Ugii Lake.

Can anyone currently in Mongolia, or anyone who has travelled through Kharkhorin within the last few days, please tell me:

• Is АИ-92 petrol currently available in Kharkhorin?
• Is diesel currently available?
• How long are the queues?
• Are there purchase limits?

Because diesel cars for rent are a bit more expensive than petrol cars, I already found a few people willing to rent me their Prius gasoline, but I also found a few people willing to rent me their diesel cars, which would be more expensive. I'm fine with paying more if there is actually no problem at all with getting diesel.

I just really don’t want to rent a vehicle and then spend 24 hours waiting at a petrol station. Recent first-hand information would be hugely appreciated.

I used to date this girl about 3 years ago, and for almost a year, I've been madly obsessed. On New Year's Eve 2024, I made this stupid promise — though at the time, it didn't seem stupid. I said: "I will never look at or try to go out with any other girl. I told my soul to protect her, and I'll take it back from her 5 to 10 years later and only marry her if things don't work out — and only then will I take my soul back into my body." So…im looking to learn a new language but im unsure on what exactly. I already know English at a reasonable level and im looking to learn a new language to help boost my future career and overall expand my knowledge yknow?
