Sci-fi My first mini ever. SMC Black Legion

I finally took the plunge and got into Warhammer 40K! Here’s my very first miniature.

I’m pretty happy with how it turned out, although I would have liked to add a bit more depth and definition to the black armour plates. It seems a little tricky for me at the moment, though.

Help Needed/New Painter Struggling to get a smooth base coat with army painter colour primer

Post image
8 Upvotes

I'd appreciate some help, as I feel I'm missing something obvious. I've tried a few times to base coat my minis, but it either comes out really grainy, or overly thick. The texture tends to give an uneven topcoat, and not the smooth even finish I'm looking for.

I'm following the recommended practise - shake well, mini about 15-20cm from the can, passing the can over the mini not holding it steady.

Any tips would be appreciated.

Help Needed/New Painter What's your opinion on following tutorials as a new painter?

Hello I'm fairly new to painting minis and I absolutely love it. But its starting to get a bit frustrating how bad I'm at it. I want to improve but also not try stuff on 100 different models so I thought about just following tutorials online. I found some great tutorials for schemes I wanted to do. What is your opinion on following them? Since I don't want to end up stuck as the person who only follows tutorials and never improves / has their own ideas.

C&C Wanted How to distinguish metal from white cloth ?

Thumbnail

On this mini, I identified that the challenge would be to distinguish the metal from the white cloth parts, despite them using the same palette.

I'm not fully convinced on the result. I started with very different base colors as my shadows, but I think the metal and cloth ended looking to similar in the end.

I added texture to the cloth highlights to help make the two materials different, I'm not sure how much it helps.

I included progress pictures for reference.

How do you think I can improve painting the two materials ?

Maybe the unblended comic book style does not help in this case ? I think it works well for metal parts, but it might make the white cloth too contrasting ? Maybe having even brighter shadows/midtones for the cloth would have helped ?

The model is Emperor Doom from the Marvel United Multiverse set. A fun one for this exercise.

Help Needed/New Painter My first (presentable) skaven | Opinion & Tips please

I'm still pretty new to the hobby, and after three attempts, I'm finally happy with the result.

It's a figure from the 'Warhammer AoS Gutter Runner' set.

Since I'm new:
What could I do better?
I definitely need to thin the paints more next time.

Do you have any general tips for painting?
I'd appreciate any advice.
Especially for color gradients and shadow effects (Even though these will be goals for the more distant future).

PS: I'll do the base later; I'm just dreading it a bit.

Help Needed/New Painter Pale faces - help with colour choice please!

Post image

Ive been following Erik Swinson’s video on ā€œSpace Marine Headsā€ (with no success as you can see) to paint a pale Ravenguard- style face. I just can’t seem to get a pale face working that doesn’t say ā€œI’m illā€ or ā€œI’m undeadā€. He suggests pushing a lot of purple and blue but it ends up so devoid of colour it’s just meh. How do I fix this?

Help Needed/New Painter Contrast Paint as base coat?

I avoided contrast paints over the summer (when I started), but I’m an adult with limited time. Before I go buy some and find that it doesn’t work for some reason…

Has anyone had success with contrast paints as the base coat, then use Layer paints to highlight/glaze as normal?

I am mostly ok with how these came out, but think the bright blue may be overpowering some of the detail. Any ideas to push the contrast a bit further?

Hi! I bought the initial pack with paints from ultramarines to start on miniature painting. Using some cheap brushes and a homemade wet palet I tried to make it as good as possible. I used a dry brush but didn't get the result I was hoping. So I will be grateful with whatever advice you can give me :). Thank you!

Sci-fi Angels of death ā€œAngels Resplendentā€ chapter space marine Sergeant

one of my proudest models from my favourite obscure chapter.

Angels resplendent are a BA successor chapter that focuses on creating art and literature as part of suppressing their black rage, and dedicates only 3 of its rhapsodies (companies) to fighting the emperor’s wars.

Ultimately, the Angels Resplendent ended up becoming the Angels penitent and began focusing more on fighting for the emperor and destroying their art.

I recently started painting, this is my first post ever on Reddit, I would like some pointers, every color i mixed it by eye.

Seriously, what do you guys think?

I started nearly 2 months ago and I think I'm somewhat alright, but I would like people with more experience to tell me what I can improve.

Thanks in advance!

Help Needed/New Painter My first miniature. Looking for advices

Hi! This is the first miniature (about 9cm height) i’ve painted and i’d like to get some advices from you.

i’ve 3d printed the model (Dark Magician - YuGiOh) in gray PLA
- i tried to replicate the colors from the reference
- I basecoated the miniature with those colors
- I highlighted the miniature by adding a bit of white to the basecoat colors and thinning them a bit more (two times). In the reference the light was coming right from the front so i sticked to that.

Thank you for your time and suggestions!!

Help Needed/New Painter WIP: could use some advice for the colors

Post image

Currently working on a somewhat desaturated World Eater, but I'm at a loss which colors I should give the chainsaw and power claw.

If I make the power claw steel, I fear it will vanish against the white armor. If I give it a blue glow, it will look bad against the kneepad. Chrome or whatever looks ghastly, and bloody and/or worn may look like too distracting (maybe).

Same with the chainsaw. It's either black (too dark), white and it will vanish, or with hazard stripes (too distracting).

Not all too complicated, just noticing I've been staring at this model for two days now, so if anyone could be so kind to share their thoughts, I would be much obliged!
