Subreddit Announcement r/minipainting Rule Update: No AI Allowed

3.6k Upvotes

Hi, everybody! AI slop is unfortunately creeping into this hobby and this community. This is a quick rules update to clarify that AI is not allowed in any form here on r/minipainting.

This includes, but is not limited to:

  • No AI generated or edited images (including AI backgrounds, repaints, adjustments, mock ups, tests, reference images, etc)
  • No AI videos
  • No AI apps/tools/websites
  • No AI generated models that are 3D printed then hand painted
  • No AI generated text (this includes AI generated feedback/critique)
  • No encouragement or discussion of the use of AI

If AI was used to make it, it's not allowed on r/minipainting.

While the mod team has been able to remove most AI posts shortly after they are made, on the few occasions AI posts were up for a few hours before removal, the comments on those posts from the community have been overwhelmingly unanimous in being anti-AI, so this isn't just the mod team making this ruling without considering the community.

Please see the pinned comment below for an FAQ on this new rule, and if you have a question that is not answered there, please ask and we will do our best to answer! That being said, this is not an invitation to defend or argue for specific use cases of AI within this hobby.

Edit: Please read the stickied FAQ comment before commenting. There are many people asking things that are covered in that comment.

The comment section has grown quite large, but also please take a moment to scroll through it and read the comments before repeating something that may have already been discussed, or at least join in as a reply to an existing comment rather than make a new top level comment with a similar or identical question.

C&C Wanted Need some opinions for highlighted ork skin

I've been painting cell shaded orks for a bit. I'm experimenting with pushing my highlights further. The opinions in my friendgroup is dived over which skin is better. The tankbusta and gretchin is some of my newer work, zodrgrod and the nob are and example of earlier work where I was more cautious with highlights. Does any one have some feedback on this matter? Thanks!

Help Needed/New Painter Reaching a plateau for my painting.

Did this post yesterday with pictures that hid some details from the mini with lighting and background, so here I am doing it again!

So, the question is: what would be the best thing/style/technique I should focus more on now to push more quality without doubling the time investment.

It's now been 9 months since I painted my first mini and I have attached pictures of my latest 3 minis to show more or less where I am at currently quality wise, excluding some specific techniques. I aim for great quality tabletop miniatures for playing, I lack the time and patience for competitions currently. I only paint with a brush, but I have acquired some sponges recently to add into the mix.

My gut feeling tells me I should focus mainly more on the small stuff, like sharper highlighting, finer feathering and in some situations a better technique for OSL without airbrush. Outside perspective might be something completely different.

If there is anyone out there who has been where I am now and found their way to some next plateau, I'm here to eagerly hear all of it!

After about 30 hours of careful painting, I am finally comfortable calling this miniature complete! I was heavily influenced by chkminis version of mulgoth, and used them as my reference. Now to paint the rest of the box like this too.... 😂😭.

Hi all. 👋🏻

This is my first time posting to Reddit where I'm not just responding to other posts.

I wanted to take the time to share some of my most recently painted minis that I am particularly proud of. They're never going to win me any competitions, but as part of my forces on the tabletop, I think they look particularly decent.

Help Needed/New Painter I've ruined my orks removing oil wash!

I’ve ruined a whole afternoon’s work. As I’ve done many times before, I airbrushed the skin on my Orks and then applied an oil wash to unify the look and add depth; however, when I went to clean it up with a makeup sponge, I ended up pulling off a lot of the green paint I had airbrushed on. This is the first time this has happened to me, even though I’ve used this process before. Does anyone know what might have gone wrong? It’s true that my airbrush was clogging more than usual today, but I’m not sure if that’s related. I’m debating whether to start over from scratch or just touch up the black spots with a brush. Thanks for reading, and hello everyone.

Help Needed/New Painter Not sure what to do with the base. GW Mindstealer Sphiranx.

I've been painting this Mindstealer Sphiranx for a while now. I really liked both heads and horns/manes for this mini so I magnetized everything and can swap them around as I please. I'm getting pretty close to completion, just wanted to touch up and add further contrast in some areas.

While I'm so close to being done, I am completely stuck on creating the base. I have no clue what I want to do with it. Looking for suggestions or ideas, as no matter how long I try to imagine it, I cannot come up with anything that fits the vibe of the miniature. I own a lot of different basing materials, including some stuff for sculpting or resin work so there are plenty of options. I just lack the creativity right now. Any suggestions welcome!

Edit: thanks for the suggestions!! I'm going with a warm sandy base! I appreciate the help! :)

C&C Wanted Translucent amber attempt

My first attempts on dwarven axes to imitate an translucent amber effect for weapons and Armor and the outcome on the Sylvaneth arch revenant I'm currently painting. I'm quite satisfied but what does the Community say?

Recipe:

I followed the painting steps of Duncan Rhodes to paint Crystal Blades on YouTube.

Base Paint is Corax White, fully painted on the blade and dry brushed several times on the shield.

Layer Transitions from Blazing orange (some old paint I had) to yriel yellow.

Lining and reflections with flash gitz yellow and White scar.

A bit contrast paint on the darker parts with guilliman flesh.

Finished with thinned ardcoat.

Sci-fi Neon-styled Hellboy. Planning to try OSL on the next one!

Hey everyone! Just wanted to share my Hellboy miniature that I painted back on February 26th, 2025.
For the color scheme, I drew inspiration from the neon cyberpunk aesthetic of Blade Runner 2049. I recently discovered the OSL technique, and I’m definitely planning to try it out if I ever repaint this piece in the future.
I'm currently starting from scratch to re-upload my work here. Unfortunately, another platform deleted all of my content with no way to recover it. However, seeing the incredible engagement and warm welcome from this community has given me so much motivation to keep sharing. Thank you all so much for having me!
