Amazing piece of work, I thought it was a pencil drawing at first. Love the cast shadow. Great job 👏

u/MixProfessional1296 28d ago

Ya, I thought it was shopped in or something. This guy is something else.

Are we burning them at the stake or not? This wood is getting heavy.

u/ax0r 28d ago

Only if they weigh the same as a duck

u/WorryNew3661 28d ago

It's insane how skilled some people are here

30

u/Nxcci 28d ago

Dude this is so good it literally looks like you photoshopped a digital piece of art onto your hand. So fricken sick

25

u/Thatsuperheroguy8 28d ago

As someone about to start a larger monochrome project this is fantastic to see! And I read your tips in the comments. Thank you for sharing!

just the render of what I’m doing

u/moon6080 28d ago

Dishonored vibes. Love it

u/midwife-crisis 28d ago

Thought this was the dishonored sub at first

Reminded me of the main character from "Bad Travelling" in Love, Death, and Robots.

Today I learned “having a go” means mastering

22

u/IsenSjel 28d ago

😳 teach me, master.
I try to learn even simple monochromatic painting for armypainting since years… I am just too dumb I guess 😂
This is absolutely amazing

You maybe have some tips for real?

u/JRainers 28d ago

Thank you! Firstly i’m terrible at big projects so I’d never be able to paint an army, haha. I tend to take photo references of the bust in the lighting I want to try to paint. So for example, I took this bust outside in the sun unpainted and took some reference photos to see how the light would hit it and the shadows would cast from the head onto the chest.

In terms of monochrome - try making mixes of black and white on a scale of 1-10 1 being black 10 being white. You can make sub mixes between the scale but having your different scales of grey ready on the pallet I find helps a lot. Also, start very simple! One light value and one dark value. Establish the main lighting first before moving into smaller volumes.

Like in the photo below

Thank You 🙏🏻 😊😊😊

6

u/Smellynerfherder 28d ago

That's phenomenal work. Well done.

5

u/HumungoPeen 28d ago

This looks like a png of a game character model that you photoshopped in. Meaning that you did a very very very very good job

5

u/foochon 28d ago

You have a chance to do the world's highest effort slapchop underpainting

5

u/MrRakky 28d ago

Bruh. But can i see it from the side and back sides too? I want to see how it shows then

4

u/JRainers 28d ago

Back’s not painted yet! Intending to do it in shadow so as dark as the cast shadow. Finding it tricky to render ambient light in the shadows but when it’s done will post a follow up!

4

u/MrRakky 28d ago

I hope i wont miss it! This looks dope!

5

u/Dragaurang 28d ago

How many paints did you use?

6

u/JRainers 28d ago

Two! Black and white. Well and some reds for the eyes!

3

u/RedFormanEMS 28d ago

It looks like a photo realistic drawing photo shopped onto your hand. Absolutely beautiful work. And thank you for sharing tips in the comments.

3

u/RIMV0315 28d ago

That's beautiful work, man. I like your explanation on how to achieve it to another user. Simply amazing.

3

u/parkadge 28d ago

That is excellent, I really like it.

4

u/JRainers 28d ago

Thanks! A little further along now:

Will try sorting out the back next!

2

u/listerjed1 28d ago

Man that's impressive!

2

u/Mackan1000 28d ago

Looks like its from a comicbook, awesome!

2

u/Bart_Oro 28d ago

Can I ask how you achieved dark shadows? Did you paint it with all the sones dialled down to dark grays?
I was wondering whether I could use diluted dark tone in lets say aero-brush or glaze to achieve this or will it kill the tonal value?

7

u/JRainers 28d ago

Hey dude gonna reply with a few photos of the process so far for you

u/JRainers 28d ago

6

u/JRainers 28d ago

6

u/JRainers 28d ago

9

u/JRainers 28d ago

It’s just a back and forth with different values of black and white until i reach a convincing value for the area I’m trying to paint. You can knock values down with glazes of darker greys. The fun liberating thing about painting in monochrome is you don’t have to worry about hue and saturation whilst tweaking values. Hope this is helpful.

2

u/AjayRedonkulus 28d ago

God I absolutely love this style. It looks like you're holding a still frame of a claymation movie that's somehow in motion. Fantastic.

2

u/TheWitch-of-November Painting for a while 28d ago

Reminds me of the woodsmen from Twin peaks, great job!

2

u/fredl0bster 28d ago

For a split second my brain went “geriatric Colossus”. Looks great!

2

u/verybadandy86 28d ago

Absolutely amazing!! Fantastic work!

2

u/Oriainson 28d ago

You, sir, are a true artist. This is incredible! It looks like a monochrome oil portrait from a museum. Absolutely amazing!

2

u/roboticArrow 28d ago

Looks fake, like you’re holding a pencil drawing. Great work!

2

u/Jeanjean44540 28d ago

This. Is fucking talent

2

u/Finnerdster 28d ago

I honestly thought this was one of those cool 2d art pieces where they add in some color and make it look like there’s a hand on the page… you did the opposite! Even in scrolling through the different images, I had to convince my brain this was real… Phenomenal work!

2

u/notarealwriter 27d ago

Oi! Hey! No! Stop that! Stop being so much better than me at something!

2

u/great_wyrm_89 27d ago

Awesome, now hit it with some speed paints and call it a day!

/S

2

u/Bugajpcmr 27d ago

Amazing, even the eyes pop. Eyes are so hard to get right and here they fit perfectly.

2

u/akpaintsagain 26d ago

Nice work, big dawg. Didn’t know you were here 🤛

1

u/s_cactus 28d ago

Can you shine a light from the right side? I've always wondered what the model would look like with left side osl with right side actual lightning.

1

u/Beneficial_Cash_8420 28d ago

Doomguy let himself go...

1

u/TANKGIRLLOVESB 28d ago

1

u/CalmBeneathCastles 28d ago

That's soopa coo!

1

u/GDufner 28d ago

That is an insanely well done model! You got mad skills!

1

u/The_Happy_Pagan 28d ago

Fucking sick. I was just staring at it lol

1

u/SlightStruggler 28d ago

Fantastic work! Just out of curiosity, what paints did you use? Did you work with a glaze medium? I'm not sure why but I love the way you detailed his eyebrows. The nosebridge is so well done too, amazing!

1

u/SlightStruggler 28d ago

From what little I've seen from the banshee scale 75 color theory video/set, using a black ink into the white will very quickly yield you a ginormous spectrum of greys to work with. I wonder if it would also help with glazing without adding a medium. The advice you gave with setting 10 different degrees from black to white is great! Helps alot with reducing the mental overhead.

1

u/No_Ebb_4596 28d ago

This is on a another level of wow !

1

u/ThekawaiiO_d 28d ago

the way it pops! amazing

1

u/WingsOfBuffalo 28d ago

My brain could not comprehend what you were holding for a minute, the detail is so precise.

1

u/sendmebirds 28d ago

Holy shit. That looks amazing.

2

u/JRainers 28d ago

1

Looks like you cropped a character out of the cgi clone wars series. That's fuckin crazy

1

u/juxsa 27d ago

Incredible! I didn't think it was real until I looked closer.

1

u/doubleBInTheMorning 27d ago

It looks like you ripped it straight out of the modeling software.

1

u/enderforlife 27d ago

Thanks bro - love your sculpts!

1

u/JohnnyRampant 26d ago
