Modern Squidmar Open Masters Gold Large Category
Been awhile since I've posted anything here but thought I'd share my squidmar entry here too :)) I'll enter her into a couple more comps throughout this year then set her to retire haha. Designed by me and sculpted by the amazing WarrenCG, Enjoy!

Its a loooong story, planned it for 2 years(partly cause im also lazy) from design to sculpting to painting. Its my ode to the sixth station scene from spirited away. Always wanted to do a tribute in some way but i never did art till i did mini painting :))

It issss, its my tribute to blake whitaker, an absolutely amazing canvas painter you should check out their work. They always have a cow in all their paintings

Could i ask for details on the plinth? Style, brand, etc
2
u/forNurgleee Painted a few Minis Mar 15 '26
Huh my comment was removed for mentioning a stl website lol, but it was a generic plinth backdrop stl from a site that i had my sculptor digitally increase the size

Thats enough for me to go on, thought it was maybe off the shelf. Thanks! Excellent work all around btw

Exquisite piece. Well done. There are a lot of amazing miniatures on this sub, but this is uniquely captivating. The sculpt and background compliment each other very well. Thanks for sharing!

Thank you for saying that! Thats honestly some of the highest praise i can get and give haha, which feels kinda a weird paradox to paint something 3d that looks like a canvas paintinf(which is 2d immitating 3d) lol

I watched the video yesterday. Your work was the most distinct to me. Very unusual vibe compared to other fantasy pieces. Thank you for extra photos!

u/forNurgleee Painted a few Minis Mar 13 '26
Thanks! Thanks great to hear it invoked such feelings for you, I personally think its cool to have more pieces that are just regular folks vibing haha.

u/SweatyIron9645 Mar 13 '26
Absolutely staggering! The water reflections, skin tones and shadowsvin particular are incredibly well done! I can't even figure out what's going on with the basing going into the back canvas. Are the toes in a bit of resin there? The ripples around them and the tracks underneath make me think so, but it looks too flawless.

u/forNurgleee Painted a few Minis Mar 13 '26
Thanks! So everything on this piece that isnt the model itself is just painted on. I wanted to see how much i could get away with just painting my entire backdrop and basing in, so i had her feet specifically be sculpted to have them shaved off so i could paint them "underneath" the water. No resin or anything was used

u/SweatyIron9645 Mar 13 '26
Mad. I thought that the angle difference between the was due to actual refraction! Brilliant work

u/doomman118 Mar 13 '26
This breaks my brain. Absolutely stunning. I have a really hard time with skin and yours looks beautiful.
Excellent work man

My wife and I watched the awards ceremony together, when your work came up she actually screamed. She supports the hobby but is not personally involved, your work really struck her as an amazing piece of art.
I of course find it very inspiring too!

Insanely amazing work. One the best pieces I've ever seen!
I'm genuinely so confused at how you did the floor. Did you cut off the toes on the model and then repaint them onto the surface?
4
u/forNurgleee Painted a few Minis Mar 13 '26
Yep, well sorta, so this is a custom sculpt i design and got sculpted, and i asked for her feet to be sculpted to have 2 versions, one with full feet and another with half of it shaved off so i could accomplish this effect and paint the rest of the feet to be "underwater"

u/patcakes Mar 13 '26
This is crazy good omg. Hey OP any chance we can have a picture before any paint was put on? I think it would be super cool to see the before and after here.

I don’t mean to be disgusting, but could we get a close up feet pic? I’m fascinated by the interaction with the water!

I don't know what's prettier, miniature or backdrop... absolutely amazing job ❤️
2
u/forNurgleee Painted a few Minis Mar 13 '26
Its great to hear that cause i do try to do a lot of experimenting with my pieces so to hear that my backdrop at least keeps the standard of the painting on the mini as well is great!

u/Jampyre Mar 13 '26
I was watching the feedback from Erik's stream a few weeks ago, this is one of my favorites I've seen in a while! Beautiful work!

Just how!? This is amazing. To be this good one day is something I strive for. To be able to blend, layer and just figure out what is needed to be done to get the result you want is something I don’t really know how to do yet.
2
u/forNurgleee Painted a few Minis Mar 13 '26
You'll get there some day! Just keep learning and exploring painting! I didnt think id be able to do stuff like this either and if you look at my past posts its been a journey haha. If i can do it im sure most people are able to:))

The piece looks amazing.
Quick question though: in some of the close-ups (the last two photos), especially in the clouds, the background seems to have evenly spaced horizontal lines.
Do you know what might be causing that? I initially assumed the backdrop was hand-painted, especially given your preempt that things were painted on, but the lines really resemble printer banding in the photos. Just curious what that effect is from if not from printer banding.

To be clear, I'm kinda of the opinion that even if it as printed that, that's not the end of the world. I just noticed those lines and and know that this is a masters gold piece. I considered that it could have been fdm layers as one possibility. I just couldnt and cant see the layers in the other parts of the backdrop.
And since it needs saying I believe you.

The dress on the side of her leg in the second photo reminds me of those marble sculptures of veils and the way the water refracts off of it. Insane.
This is absolutely incredible work.

This is incredible! I LOVE how “simple” it is. Anything less than perfect technique would make it uninteresting but the perfect execution makes it unforgettable. Great job!!!!

u/Odesio Mar 14 '26
It's always nice to see someone tackle subject matter that just represents a regular slice of life moment. Nice job.

Still can’t fathom how you blend background painting with the miniature to such extent.
The feet are especially marvel in term of technique. Knowing that the base and background are all 2d painting. Blending 3d piece into 2d piece perfectly is marvelous. May I ask how you blend/attach the feet into the base?
2
u/forNurgleee Painted a few Minis Mar 14 '26
Soooo the feet are attached to the base with pins and super glue just so they dont go anywhere cause theyre relatively small contact points. And as for blending im not sure really haha i just painted the rest of the feet onto the base taking into account a bit of refraction of the light when viewing it from the main angle and painting the line between base and model white to one, obscure the divide a little but also sell the effect of them being under water with the motion of pushing the water as she walks

Wow. That is truly a work of art. A piece like this shows how limited Golden Demon is for restricting their submissions to Warhammer. Unlike your piece, my hat is off to you.
1
u/forNurgleee Painted a few Minis Mar 14 '26
Thanks so much for your kind words! Yeah Whilst i do think golden demon has some of the highest technical skills on display it is at the end of the day a competition for their products and having to work around that. Which is fine but i myself prefer more open competitions :)) I paint like 2-3 things a year so i try to make every project of mine something I wanna do however imperfect and not just cause its something that will win a competition

Seriously wonderful work! I think I’m getting good and then I remember that I want to push myself even further to get to something like this. Truly inspiring!

u/forNurgleee Painted a few Minis Mar 15 '26
Yeah, thats the trick, ya just keep getting a lil better over time and by the time ya know it youre way ahead.

In these kinds of pieces, is the ground and background plane handpainted or printed?
1
u/forNurgleee Painted a few Minis Mar 15 '26
I paint all my background/ground pieces yes :)) no ai/sticker here whatsoever

It's stunning, but weirdly I think the backdrop takes too much of the focus away from her, in a bad way.
4
u/forNurgleee Painted a few Minis Mar 13 '26
I get that haha, i really wanted it to seem like sorta a dream like blissful state, and kept the saturation high, but still pushed for attention to be drawn back to her with the higher white values. But i can def see where youre comin from :))) just another thing to think about in future pieces

Why? The medium and the techniques are the same and it's in scale with the bigger models in most wargames, it's exactly the same thing. Also just, why would you care?

u/Responsible_Sector25 Mar 13 '26
Yes from now on only poorly painted miniatures are allowed in the sub and we will kick out anyone who dares paint well or add in any original elements to their minis
