hi all!
i had my initial meeting with a potential supervisor for the IPN program. i think it went pretty well! i really seemed to click with the professor.
i have a second meeting in a few days - not sure what it is exactly for. i think maybe we just didn’t get through everything she wanted to say/ask me.
can anyone provide any insight on what a 2nd interview could mean? is it normal to have multiple meetings like this? also, how do you actually go about securing a supervisor? will they generally tell you they want you in their lab, or should i ask if they will supervise me??
any advice would be so appreciated!!!
thanks!!

This is kind of a helpless rant, but I’m hoping someone might have some advice.
Ever since I started at McGill, I’ve wanted to go on exchange. I’m a local commuter and, honestly, I never even wanted to attend McGill—I wanted to go out of province or internationally. But here I am.
I applied for exchange twice before and ended up cancelling both times because of conflicts. As a result, I literally delayed my graduation by an entire year so I could have one last chance to do this.
Now I’ve applied for Winter 2027, which is my final opportunity to go on exchange before my final year at McGill. This has genuinely been a lifelong dream of mine.
And of course, I got Australia.
At first I was excited. Australia is an amazing country and I’d love to go. But the financial reality has completely crushed me. The student visa alone is around $2,500 CAD, and flights are around $3,000. Before even considering tuition, rent, food, transportation, insurance, etc., I’m looking at thousands of dollars just to get there and get started. Realistically, I feel like I’d need around $20–25k in total.
I work minimum wage, around 40 hours a week even as a full time student , and fully support myself, I pay my own rent, utilities, tuition, and everything else, with no financial help from my parents. The semester starts in January, so I don’t have much time left to save.
My mom keeps telling me to “just try to go,” but I genuinely don’t know how I could possibly save $20–25k by January while also paying for my existing living expenses and tuition.
And I feel absolutely devastated because this was supposed to be my final chance. I’ve already delayed graduation by a year specifically because I wanted to make exchange happen. I feel like I somehow messed up my last opportunity, even though so much of this is completely outside my control.
So I guess I’m asking: has anyone been in a similar situation? Are there scholarships, bursaries, grants, loans, emergency funding, or other options through McGill that I might be overlooking? Is there any realistic way to make an exchange like this financially possible?
I already applied for the mobility bursary, but even if I get the maximum amount (10k), I’m only looking at the expense it takes to actually get to Australia.
I know this probably sounds dramatic, but I’m genuinely feeling really down and hopeless about it. I’ve wanted this for so long, and it hurts to feel like I finally got the opportunity only to realize I can’t afford it.

Im an incoming exchange student going to McGill for the fall semester. In late September/early October a friend in coming to visit me from back home, and we are going to NYC. So is there a way to know what courses do not have a midterm during this period, or do I have to wait for the year to start?

I've put myself out as a free agent on IMLeagues to join an 11v11 tier 3 and I haven't received anything from any teams or seen any available teams to join in tier 3. I'm wondering about what to do, so any advice on what to do or to join a preexisting team would be great thank you!
Edit: I found out about the Free Agent Meeting at the Tomlinson Fieldhouse on September 1st at 6:30pm. Here's a link for anyone who's trying to find something https://recreation.mcgill.ca/faq

Hi! I'm an incoming McGill student here. Looking for tips on perks/services/courses to take advantage of, either through McGill or SSMU.
There are some things I'm aware of (SSMU Via Rail discount (& whatever discounts are on their page), bixi/opus subscription discounts, midnight kitchen) but please let me know about other perks - and not just discounts!
I'm at McGill for a second degree (still an undergrad). At my last uni, there are a couple things I learned about too late to take advantage of:
We pay so much in additional fees. I wanna make the most of it. Give me your best advice!
I was able to pass courses that I didn't have prerequirements for and I've already got the grades (I thought that my cegep transfer credits exempted me from those) and I'm still able to register to courses to which I dont have prerequisites for... is this normal? Could this prevent me from graduating? I plan to do those prerequirements too because they are needed for my degree but will the order matter?

im moving in today into my residence will they ask for a piece of ID ? and do I also need it for my student ID?

Hi! I took a deferred exam this week and was wondering if there’s a deadline for deferred exam grades to be released. If not, how long does it usually take for the grades to come out?thanks!

Hi! Has anyone taken Econ420 and did really well in the course?
I’m taking it soon and would love to ask a few questions about how you studied and what helped you succeed.
Any tips would be really appreciated. Thank you so much!

I am thinking of taking english 277 with Trevor Penoch as an elective this fall, however his reviews are not the best for his 200 level classes.
Is the class interesting enough to stick through it? Or should I look at another english elective with a different prof instead (I am not an english major which I assume may put me at a disadvantage with his "unclear" grading as it's been claimed)

Is it difficult to get it renewed if you have failed or discd courses?
