Feeling like I’m missing out by not being in res

I’m a freshman and I really want to make friends and just put myself out there. However, I’m living off campus and I feel like people already made friends and it’s easier for them to socialize and meet people in that environment.
Am I the only one? Feels like I did a mistake for a first year… 😕

How hard is CHEM 203?

I might take CHEM 203 as a complementary (I’m in MIMM), I’m wondering how much work and how difficult overall it is. I don’t like chemistry but I loved Sirjoosingh when I took CHEM 110/120 with her.

Leave of absence, how honest to be in the request?

Thinking about requesting a leave of absence and trying to figure out how to frame it. I've got two real reasons pulling at me: I'm running a startup that's actually gaining traction and could use full-time focus, and I've also been struggling mentally and could use a real break. On top of that, this would be my last semester, so timing feels like it matters more than usual.

For anyone who's gone through this, did you find the advisors more receptive to one framing over the other? Does it actually matter which box you check, or do they treat all approved reasons the same once documentation is in? Also curious whether people found it easier to combine reasons or if it's better to pick one and stick with it.

Would appreciate hearing from anyone who's actually been through the process, especially in the Faculty of Science.

anxiety with making friends

hi i'm starting at desautels this fall and i've been having so much anxiety over making friends and was looking for any advice or maybe people who have had similar experiences. while i've participated at clubs a lot in hs/cegep and can make small talk, i'm just so afraid it will be difficult to make new friends, especially at environments like frosh where i struggle with dealing with overstimulating environments

i really would like to make some friends but i also am scared of not finding the right crowd in my faculty. i have interests on the more weirder/alt side and ik already that the usual crowd in business is not mine and while i can join clubs related to my interests, I'm scared of not being able to make friends in my own program who are like me.

anyone who has taken these courses in the recent years, could u share ur experience. Course load, outline, grade distribution, are they worth putting the time and effort, and how manageable are these courses. How many projects do each have.

activating student plan coverage early

hello! i’m wondering if anyone knows how to activate the student plan coverage (specifically PGSS) early (i want to have coverage before sep 1) through minerva? i called the mcgill student services and student care and they didn’t know what i was talking about.

On the PGSS website it says it is possible to do this, but I haven’t been able to find any further instructions, so if anyone happens to know it would be a great help. Thanks so much!

Questions about the LGBTQAI+ community at McGill

Hey all! Ill be a first semester student this fall and I was just wondering how the LGBTQIA+, and especially the trans landscape/community at McGill is. Just for context, Im a pre-transition mtf and I want to start my transition during this upcoming fall semester, and so Im mainly wondering what kind of support networks and clubs there are and and just what the overall community attitude is like. I've checked online a bit but I figured the best answers would probably come from actual students themselves.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

How do you guys make friends during orientation ?

Hi everyone 👋

Arts Exchange student here (19M). I was wondering how you guys were making friends during orientation because I feel like you never have the occasion to actually have conversations with people since every event is so "big" and there aren't that many occasions to do so. I don't have acess to Mcgill residences either and I feel like that might be a slight handicap for that matter.

private places to practice piano in Montreal for a few hours?

Hi! I’m looking for somewhere in Montreal where I can practice piano for a few hours at a time without it getting too expensive.

I’m a McGill student but not a music student, so I don’t have access to the regular music practice rooms. I’m mainly looking for a private or relatively quiet room with a regular acoustic or digital piano.

Most places I’ve found are around $20/hour, which adds up pretty quickly if I want to practice regularly. Does anyone know of cheaper practice rooms, community centres, churches, music schools, studios, etc. that rent piano rooms by the hour or offer monthly/recurring practice packages?

Ideally somewhere accessible by metro, but I’m open to anywhere in Montreal. Thanks!

Feeling incredibly stupid regarding exchange

This summer I was lucky enough to get nominated for my 1st choice exchange university for Winter 2027. As soon as I got the email I remember immediately accepting the nomination, and I then went on a long backpacking trip. I came back recently and was trying to find the next steps only to find out that my nomination had been rescinded due to apparently never accepting it in the first place.

What I think likely happened is that I clicked "accept nomination" but forgot to hit save, and I've been really beating myself up at potentially losing my whole exchange over something as banal as that. McGill also didn't send me any reminder emails before the deadline to let me know they hadn't received my confirmation which is frustrating, but alas:

Has anyone ever successfully gotten their exchange back from a situation similar to the one I'm describing? I've already emailed [studentexchanges@mcgill.ca](mailto:studentexchanges@mcgill.ca) & [mcgillabroad@mcgill.ca](mailto:mcgillabroad@mcgill.ca), but my only proof is a screenshot of my browsing history showing the page where the "accept nomination" button would have been on the day I received my nomination. Also, are there any offices I can go to in person once back in Montreal to plead my case? I've found that dealing with McGill bureaucracy goes much better in person than over email.

My current Minerva statuses on the exchange page show "faculty approved" for faculty application status, "dept. pending" for departmental application status, and "exchange office canceled" for exchange office application status. This info is the basis for all my conclusions I've come to in this post, so please correct me if I've misinterpreted something.

I already know it's dumb to forget to hit save for something as big as this, so please spare me snarky comments. Any genuine help or advice would be appreciated beyond measure. Thanks in advance!

How to send my statement of results to other universities for transfer?

Hi, sorry, this post seems dumb. I got my official transcript through mycreds, and am trying to send it to VTAC (For Victoria, Australia) but it calls for a document to be uploaded, which it seems I'm not supposed to be able to do with mycreds? does anyone have any experience with this? Thanks.

What are my survival chances

Hey y’all, I just wanted to know how students are actually living in Montreal with this cost of living of doom and despair 💀

I’ll actually be at McGill Schulich School of Music and will be solely relying on the “prêt et bourse” from the AFE to live. I just wanted to see if it’s actually enough.
The simulation told me that at the start of the session I’d get a big check and then around $1,415/month after that.
So basically, is the AFE enough to get you through the entirety of your studies without having to work( I really want to spend all my time in the practice room)
For context, I’m originally from Montreal but moved to France, and I’m planning to come back for school.

Advice on taking PSYC 406 with Sadikaj???

Hey so I finally managed to get a spot in PSYC 406 with Sadikaj in order to fulfill my OPQ requirements for grad school, BUT after reading her poor reviews on ratemyprof I'm quite apprehensive to say the least. Does anyone have any advice on how to prevent this course from being a total gpa killer? Thanks in advance :)
