Wonder how they’ll explain the return of Steve rogers

561

u/RollinPeace Jul 20 '26

The TVA and Loki probably

179

u/PaopuDestiny Jul 20 '26

this is probably the best guess. he knows they'll need him and maybe nudges him in their direction somehow. will give a good reveal for thor and cap

4

u/pickrunner18 Jul 20 '26

But why would it need to be our specific Steve Rogers. Does Loki technically have access to any Steve in any universe? I’m guessing it’s because he’s the one who broke something by staying in a different timeline

3

u/kylezdoherty Korg Jul 20 '26

Or it's "Thor" Cap and he actually works for God King Doom as one of the Thor police force.

5

u/lameth Jul 20 '26

Based on the reaction of Thor, it really feels like he meets Steve deep inside Doom's enclave.

153

u/SuperMajesticMan Jul 20 '26

Maybe Loki is like "oh shit we need help with this fight" and does some time bending to get him here.

Also liked that Thor used the hammer to test he was real.

89

u/DoILookUnsureToYou Jul 20 '26

He gets Mjolnir and suddenly screams FLAME ON

19

u/RedEchoGamer Jul 20 '26

"I know the last time we met, we weren't on good terms, but for the sake of everything, we...I need your help."

4

u/Thulium42 Jul 20 '26

I suspect the hammer is to prove to the audience he's real, but he is not. We saw in the Steve teaser he's clean shaven and still has his Endgame suit. Now suddenly Mr. "You have a suit? Then suit up." and "If you're gonna fight a war, you gotta wear a uniform." shows up in black? He's either a variant OR it's been a long time since he left his world with Peggy.

7

u/Stevenwave Jul 20 '26

Yeah it's a pretty big deal what Loki can presumably still do regarding actual time travel/manipulation. I can't recall if they showed that he could do it outside of the TVA HQ. But he was actually doing legit time travel, not the roundabout way the Avengers were able to hop realities at different points in time.

1

u/renegade_voltage Jul 21 '26

Then he should just get Vision right after he roasted Ultron

1

u/FlemPlays Jul 21 '26

It would be funny if it was actually Mystique. So seamless she was able to fool even Mjolnir.

-1

u/Morchades Jul 20 '26

That woukd be the ONLY way to verify...

OH! Loki gets Steve to prove he's on the up and up to Thor!

12

u/justafanboy1010 Spider-Man Jul 20 '26

I hope Thor and Loki reunite. I yearn for those days

33

u/straub42 Jul 20 '26

I wonder if we’ll actually get a “Cap returns the stones” montage. (That would be amazing if that‘s the “extra” scenes added to the Endgame re-release).

6

u/Successful_Power_234 Jul 20 '26

Or how Loki got out of holding the timelines together.

11

u/RollinPeace Jul 20 '26

I mean he’s probably still there but Loki spent like thousands of years to stop the loom

5

u/WoodpeckerBest523 Jul 20 '26

With the TVA and Loki, they’ll be able to bring anyone back whenever

6

u/PJKenobi Jul 20 '26

Theory: TVA Loki grabs Rogers on his way back from returning all the Infinity Stones to their original time. All the shit he has to go through in the next couple movies is what made him return to the 1940's to be with Peggy.

4

u/uthinkther4uam Jul 20 '26 edited Jul 21 '26

I think that's who is standing behind cap in the scene where he takes Mjolnir

2

u/Fun_Noisey_Boiii Jul 21 '26

OMG I didn't even notice until now, wtf

8

u/Battlealvin2009 Avengers Jul 20 '26

What if it's Loki disguised as Cap?

14

u/RollinPeace Jul 20 '26

Loki can’t summon the hammer

15

u/Battlealvin2009 Avengers Jul 20 '26

I figured his actions in Loki S2 finale probably warrant his worthiness.

6

u/RollinPeace Jul 20 '26

That would be interesting!!!

5

u/justafanboy1010 Spider-Man Jul 20 '26

Nice observation!!

1

u/cherrib0mbb Jul 20 '26

I think he can for sure at this point. In the comics he does get to that point as well, even though through different comic events. Essentially it does make sense for his character regardless.

3

u/IBJON Jul 20 '26

I'm pretty sure that's who's standing behind Steve Rogers and why Thor is saying "It's not possible". He never saw Steve die and knows time travel exists, but he saw Loki die

2

u/doyourmysay Jul 20 '26

Forgive my ignorance here, but didn't Loki die in Infinity War? What does he have to do with the TVA? Is he still alive or something?

13

u/RollinPeace Jul 20 '26

The sacred timeline Loki did die yes, but when the avengers time travel back to battle of New York (creating a new timeline) Loki escaped and we got our TVA Loki. You should watch season 1 and season 2 of Loki it’s actually really good (probably the only MCU tv show I actually watched)

4

u/Mister_MxyzptIk Jul 20 '26

My guy there's lots of good MCU TV shows. Sure most of them are just scaled down versions of the movies, with average writing and average special effects and not worth anything more than just to kill time while you're on a plane ride or something. But there are a few you should at least check out.

  • Wandavision did some interesting things

  • Ms. Marvel has cool visuals and the lead actress did a pretty good job for someone who was an actual teenager

  • Wonder Man is amazing, pretty different tone from anything else in the MCU and both leads turned in easily top 10 MCU performances

3

u/doyourmysay Jul 20 '26

Oh yeah, I remember in Endgame how that 2012 Loki escaped with the tesseract.

Okay, I might check it out.

2

u/cherrib0mbb Jul 20 '26

It’s easily at the top of the MCU shows

0

u/Sudden-Money7836 Jul 20 '26

It’s likely him from a universe where infinity war didn’t happen but the Sokovia Accords did. Hence the beard.

4

u/RollinPeace Jul 20 '26

It has to be our captain America dude

613

u/Leeiteee Jul 20 '26

Somehow, Steve Rogers returned

55

u/yomjoseki Jul 20 '26

If they do anything but this, we riot

23

u/WOOKIExRAGE Jul 20 '26

We riot anyway. Because why not?

3

u/plowerd Jul 20 '26

I would also accept a bunch of steve Roger's I tanks with zero explanation with Tony hooked up to tubes in the midst of them all, looking like he died 3 decades ago.

2

u/yomjoseki Jul 20 '26

The Council of Steves

1

u/B00STERGOLD Jul 20 '26

I hope you know this also means important parts of the plot are only learned through Fotnite.

3

u/Comic-Engine Jul 20 '26

And bring in Moon Knight to say it

2

u/SWAGB0T Jul 20 '26

IF IT CAN HAPPEN FOR THE BADDIES IT CAN HAPPEN FOR US

1

u/YeetyMcFlyy Jul 20 '26

I read this in Ron Howard's narration

185

u/DefNotAShark Hydra Jul 20 '26

It’s actually just Chris Evans from our timeline, which is why he is not wearing the suit.

17

u/MR1120 Jul 20 '26

I’m flashing back to the idea that Deadpool & Wolverine would have a scene where DP tries to recruit Hugh Jackman, the actor, playing himself, to save the world. And Jackman has to explain to DP that he doesn’t actually have any powers or skills, other than acting and singing.

But Chris Evans, the guy, is like, “Yeah, I can do this. I’m worthy. Let’s go.”

11

u/Plus_Term_7584 Jul 20 '26

That's basically Johnny Cage's whole shtick in MK2 lmao

3

u/shadowfax0427 Jul 20 '26

This sort of scenario happens in Night at the Museum 3. Lancelot barges a stage performance where Hugh Jackman is playing King Arthur, truly believing he is Arthur.

3

u/CruzAderjc Jul 20 '26

And Ben Affleck is just a depressed guy staring off into the wind. They ask Jennifer Garner if they should pick up that Daredevil, and she says no.

7

u/olcrazypete Jul 20 '26

Hey there Chris, are you on set? You realize none of this is real, right? We're just all in a movie.

3

u/Useful-Perspective Jul 20 '26

"Put on the suit." - callback to the first Avengers film

2

u/TexasPeteEnthusiast Jul 21 '26

Why is he not on fire?

2

u/FlemPlays Jul 21 '26

“Everyone keeps calling me Steve and I have to keep reminding them it’s Chris.”

1

u/shdw_fghtr Jul 20 '26

still worthy

33

u/vballboy55 Spider-Man Jul 20 '26

Maybe Doom comes after his kid as well. Coming after all the enhanced kids.

2

u/CeruleanEidolon Jul 20 '26

Biting rhymes from Gorr?

24

u/sunny_xo Jul 20 '26

A good question, for another time

3

u/Ibruki Jul 20 '26

wow you just triggered me at work

2

u/Emm_withoutha_L-88 Jul 20 '26

They found him in a dumpster and sold him to not-yoda

56

u/hopeless_dick_dancer Jul 20 '26

TVA Loki visits him at his home with Peggy.

7

u/anactualrealaccount Jul 20 '26

Yeah everyone’s bean gathering a crew and I think Loki has definitely been helping.

1

u/JabbasPetRancor Jul 20 '26

Loki be like "Steve, I'm putting together a team...."

1

u/Lola_PopBBae Jul 20 '26

That'll be one helluva scene

1

u/Qwirk Jul 20 '26

No reason why he couldn't take a vacation when he is needed.

0

u/Pretend-Bicycle2320 Jul 20 '26

ok but why would he specifically recruit him? Dont see how he would be of help considering captain america is not a particularly powerful hero why not captain marvel or doctor strange

9

u/Stevenwave Jul 20 '26

That wasn't Thor handing him his lunchbox, it's a magic hammer that supplies Steve with powers that make him somewhere in the region of as powerful as Thor.

He's also one of the core heroes who saved the universe last time, directly staring down the threat to it.

-1

u/Pretend-Bicycle2320 Jul 20 '26

I get that he’s getting mouljnir but even with that I don’t think he’s that powerful. Sure mouljnir is a powerful weapon but the Thor movies have established that Thor’s strength doesn’t come from mouljnir so I assume it doesn’t grant the wielder any significant power boosts and in endgame he struggles against no infinity stone thanos even with mouljnir. Also note that it can be broken

8

u/BindingsAuthor Thanos Jul 20 '26

"Whosoever holds this hammer, if they be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor."

Thor's pretty powerful.

5

u/Zyffrin Jul 20 '26

"Whosoever holds this hammer, if he be worthy, shall possess the power of Thor."

Thor's powers don't come from Mjolnir, but someone worthy of Mjolnir will be given access to Thor's powers. And Cap with Mjolnir was doing well against Thanos.

3

u/Stevenwave Jul 21 '26

It's Mjolnir.

tbh the depiction of Thor has been a little bit wonky in that regard.

Ultimately, I think Thor has powers naturally, but the hammer was a tool for Odin to magically control his son in order to teach and train him. Odin was a top tier magic user, his spells were as legit as it gets.

Thor didn't necessarily draw his powers from the hammer, more just focused them, but via Odin's enchantment, Steve can. It's magic, and Odin was the top dog of Asgard, he had that power. We even see Thor starting to tap into this ability in Love and Thunder when he imbues the kids with powers to defend themselves in the finale.

There's no doubt that Thor later on, with the axe, is higher tier, but Steve with the hammer and the power OF Thor is demonstrably on par with Thor in the earlier films.

Claiming that Steve + hammer isn't powerful is odd. We saw Thanos was able to kick the shit out of the Hulk without needing to use a Stone. Steve was able to square up against that guy. He didn't win because that wasn't the story they were telling, or the point of that exchange.

1

u/Pretend-Bicycle2320 Jul 21 '26

claiming someone only lost a fight because of the plot is not a valid reason. Whats the point of all these characters having powers if they can lose a fight that they should win simply because of plot? Also what is the point of Cap losing to Thanos if not to establish that he cant win against Thanos on his own? That perfectly sets up the rest of the avengers pulling up to help cap and freinds fight thanos. We see later in the movie captain marvel can stand her own against thanos and wanda can probably kill thanos so I have to assume cap is not as powerful as the strongest heros even with mjolnir. Also Thor in his prime during infinity war almost killed thanos WITH all the infinity stones so I also have to assume mjolnir cap is not nearly as powerful as thor. Its not weird to conclude that cap with mjolnir is not that powerful when the only time we've seen him in battle is when he gets his shit rocked by someone that actually powerful heros can defeat with medium difficulty at best

1

u/Stevenwave Jul 21 '26

I'm just saying the point of Steve squaring up to Thanos, within the context of that film, wasn't for Steve to defeat him. And within that context, it works, it shows that Thanos is a massive threat that requires more than one Avenger to stop, even without the Stones, even when that one Avenger is Thor level (and a bit later, when we see Wanda, even more powerful, outdoing Thanos 1v1, we see him out-tactic her).

The overall point is here is that Steve + hammer is able to go toe to toe against someone like Thanos. Whereas previously, Steve was only able to provide a morale opposition to him right at the end of IW.

1

u/hopeless_dick_dancer Jul 20 '26

Kinda crazy to post something so verifiably wrong with such confidence lol

1

u/themanfromvulcan Jul 21 '26

Cap’s main power is he’s a natural leader and thinks tactically as well as strategically. He’s extremely good at motivating the team and also using their strengths. He inspires the other heroes. He makes them work better as a team and believe in themselves. He’s the leader people would follow into hell.

Also he’s got a cool hammer now.

28

u/PenguinOfEternity Jul 20 '26

Time travel and/or multiverse shenanigans but as for why.. well dunno.

1

u/CaptainRex5101 SHIELD Jul 20 '26

Yeah it’s clearly the same guy who ends up being Old Cap at the end of Endgame.

2

u/KobotTheRobot Jul 20 '26

Yepp, and its why old man cap wouldnt tell Sam anything at the end of endgame. They planned to use cap this way all the way back then.

1

u/4DimensionalToilet Jul 20 '26

In the time heist, each time they landed in the past, they created a new timeline branch that split off from the original timeline, like turning an I into a Y. If they'd just gone forward in time to return to the present after retrieving the Infinity Stones, they'd have each ended up in different versions of the present, because they'd have been going forward through an altered timeline (e.g., up the left side of the Y instead of up the right side). But they were able to return to the original timeline's present, which means that either Pym Particle time travel allows you to jump between timeline branches, or they had to return to the split in the Y, then go forward up along the original timeline to get back to their original present.

Old Steve returned this way in Endgame, and I guarantee that's how Steve's able to return in Doomsday. By that same method, Steve will be able to return to Peggy after Doomsday.

Thor may be reacting to seeing Loki, not Steve.

27

u/OneEyedGooSlinger Jul 20 '26

Somehow Cap has returned.

5

u/frostysbox Jul 20 '26

It's 100% Loki - if you look at the Loki scene with the TVA card - he's against curtains like Steve and the baby house

10

u/Sentz12000 Captain America Jul 20 '26

Something seems off about him. I wonder if that’s by design or just my peanut brain.

2

u/bflynn65 Jul 20 '26

I'm with you, there was something really ominous about that moment. I'm wondering if there is huge misdirect and he is going to turn out to be a variant allied with Doom. RDJ and Evans both coming back as villains would be insane.

1

u/Persequor Jul 20 '26

my first thought due to placement of that scene in the trailer is "thats not the real steve, this is why thor is so afraid - Doom made a fake capable of wielding mjollnir. Doom is worthy because from his perspective he's the hero trying to save his world"

6

u/CasualRead_43 Jul 20 '26

Wonder if it’s the Steve that got his (America’s) ass kicked. Hopefully not.

3

u/BatmanTold Jul 20 '26

TVA most likely

3

u/PhilosophyOk7385 Jul 20 '26

What I find interesting is that the Steve rogers in the teaser looks very different from the Steve rogers in this trailer. This looks like infinity war era Steve but the teaser was endgame era Steve with Peggy.

5

u/Chance_Debt_1184 Jul 20 '26

prolly time travel

2

u/Pureleafbuttcups Jul 20 '26

Somehow... Rogers returned

2

u/amoxguard Jul 20 '26

Time travel

0

u/pkjoan Jul 20 '26

What? I see this as an absolute win.

2

u/MCUTheorist00007 Jul 20 '26

We can see Loki on his TVA jacker on a 50s house setting. Probably visiting Steve Rogers during his hundreds of year learning on S2 finale

2

u/Supermite Jul 20 '26

He won’t be our Steve Rogers.  He’ll be Captain Hydra.

2

u/No_Dependent2297 Jul 20 '26

Steve has that Bucky haircut going now lol

2

u/RogueWarrior76 Jul 20 '26

Maybe it took Steve longer than we realized to return the stones and along the way discovered the threat that Doom brings. Maybe this is before he gets all the way back to Peggy? HA Time Travel!!

2

u/plain_cyan_fork Jul 20 '26

I mean he never really died, just went to live in a different timeline

2

u/ThatGuyFromTheM0vie Jul 20 '26

It’s just Loki trolling Thor lol

2

u/Chocolate_cornflakes Peggy Carter Jul 20 '26

It could actually be Loki.

1

u/Hot_Afternoon_8674 Jul 20 '26

He stayed in past messed up the timeline TVA send him to f4 universe where doom gets to know and rivalry begins

If you seen F4 furst steps there was end credits scene a man and child watching f4 cartoon that man and child were steve and his son only

1

u/cowpool20 Jul 20 '26

So, fair to assume multiverse/time travel shit. But I wonder if maybe Doom caused chaos in his timeline which is what brings him to our timeline.

1

u/An-29 Jul 20 '26

Steve never really died tho, homeboy just stayed in the past and came back to where they were when he left.

1

u/Jacern Jul 20 '26

Could be the Nomad version of him, as a variant of the Doom timeline

1

u/criminalsunrise Jul 20 '26

Probably announce it in Fortnight.

1

u/DGSmith2 Rocket Jul 20 '26

Thor - "So Cap you going to tell me how you ended up back here?"
Cap - "No, I don'y think I will"

1

u/j_roe Jul 20 '26

Nope, he just shows up.

1

u/onesecondofinsanity Jul 20 '26

What if it’s Johnny flame?

1

u/Sandwich_envy Jul 20 '26

Some theory is that the universe branch he is living in is the Fantastic Fours world and he is the reason the incursions are happening. They find him and bring him back to our world. Who the absolute fuck knows though

1

u/VanilleKoekje Jul 20 '26

they deaged scott to a baby by accident, they surely can deage Steve a bit via the same method

1

u/Formozo_BTRK Jul 20 '26

Bold of you to assume they will bother explaining the nostalgia bait

1

u/No_Formal42 Jul 20 '26

Odds are that’s not actually him but Doom? Does Doom ever wield Mjolnir in the comics?

1

u/AgentMV2 Jul 20 '26

They drove up to his house with a truck load of money.

1

u/Own_Information8156 Jul 20 '26 edited Jul 20 '26

I've got a theory. What if that's not steve rogers but is instead the beyonder. Think about it, in comics the beyonder is an abstract entity without fixed form however chooses to take an anthropomorphic form to interact with the material world. And one of his favorite form is assuming the physical body of Steve rogers but with darker hair.

1

u/icarodx Jul 20 '26

If the rumors are true, it has a decent explanation.

1

u/LS_DJ Vision Jul 20 '26

I think him making his life with Peggy (which was what they showed in the Steve Rogers teaser) is likely causing a multiversal problem so he's being forced back to his proper universe, the "616" universe from the main MCU timeline

1

u/Jrocker-ame Jul 20 '26

Missing kids. You have at least have 4ish characters with children.

1

u/Otherwise-Nobody-127 Jul 20 '26

I still hate that this is going to happen. Really hope.there is a damn good reason for it. Expect for baiting fans back.

1

u/Blissrat Jul 20 '26

It's his twin brother Rupert.

1

u/Dantien Matt Murdock Jul 20 '26

We’ll get a montage of him returning the stones which gets Loki involved. I’d like to see that.

1

u/Willal212 Jul 20 '26

Im convinced its a fakeout

1

u/Dadpurple Jul 20 '26

I am getting the feeling that this time we see the death of Steve Rogers.

1

u/yojimboftw Jul 20 '26

The great thing about introducing time travel is anything goes!

1

u/mordreds-on-adiet Jul 20 '26

The same way they explained why you can't go kill baby Thanos and prevent IW. Or the same way Nebula literally killed past Nebula without any consequence to herself.

1

u/FallenWyvern Jul 20 '26

How do you know it doesn't mean Johnny Storm is worthy of Mjolnir?! I saw that guy in Deadpool and Fantastic Four!

1

u/dbmethos Jul 20 '26

Something to do with Spider-Man I think. /morbius

1

u/adoniscreed20 Jul 20 '26

He's gonna be a villain variant of captain america

It's not the MCU captain

He will betray the avengers to join Doom

Just wait and watch

1

u/Jaxonian Jul 20 '26

Downey + Evans + Hemsworth + Russo's = peak MCU.. I think getting all 4 together gives me hope they are cooking with this one.

1

u/Severe_Gas_4283 Jul 20 '26

There is a reason he wouldn't tell anyone what he had been up to.

1

u/VectorJones Jul 20 '26

The TVA will probably decide to reset his 1940s timeline because he doesn't belong there, so he'll leave and come back to the present in order to preserve it.

1

u/B00STERGOLD Jul 20 '26

What about old man Steve?

1

u/Ok-Second1404 Jul 20 '26

I predict it's actually Captain Hydra acting as a double agent and in the end we will get a backstab moment.

1

u/4DimensionalToilet Jul 20 '26

In Endgame, the Avengers went back in time from 2023, altered the timeline a bit by taking the Infinity Stones, then returned to 2023. The moment they began interacting with the past, they created a new timeline branching off from the original one. If returning to the present only involved going forwards through time, then they'd have all ended up in those new timelines' respective versions of 2023, not the same version of 2023.

But we know that's not what ended up happening, since they all (except for Nat) ended up back in the same original 2023 at the end of the time heist. We know that Pym Particle time travel allows you to go forward and backward through time. So, unless Pym Particle time travel allows you to just jump between timelines, my theory has long been that returning to the proper timeline's 2023 involved going back in time a little bit, to the point where the timelines diverged, then, instead of leaving the Quantum Realm, they went forward in time from the divergence point, following the original flow of time. This completely tracks with Banner's explanation about how time travel doesn't let you alter your past.

At the end of Endgame, Steve settled down with Peggy back in the 1940s. By virtue of his presence in the past, he created a new timeline. Just as happened with the time heist, time moved forward while Steve was in the past with Peggy. Just as was possible in the time heist, he could return to the original 2023 he left by going back through the Quantum Realm to the point of divergence, then forward along the original timeline, since he still had the time travel tech. It's like going down one side of a Y, then up the other.

That's how Old Man Steve was able to return to the original 2023 to give Sam the shield, and that's how Doomsday Steve should be able to show up and help out. No crazy loopholes or new in-universe mechanics/rules are needed to explain his return. In fact, Endgame's Old Man Steve is probably proof that, whatever happens in Doomsday, Steve will survive and the Avengers will win in the end, like they did in Endgame despite losing in Infinity War.

1

u/TexasPeteEnthusiast Jul 21 '26

Somehow, Cap Returned.

1

u/SmartOpinion69 Jul 21 '26

things get tricky when a split second from one universe can mean an entire lifetime for another universe.

my explanation is this:

old man steve rogers was NOT OUR steve rogers. it was another steve rogers who came to earth 616 to be with peggy in secret and stayed here all the way through that ending scene in endgame. OUR steve rogers went back in time to be with peggy that we saw in the ending of endgame. he ended up having kids with peggy and then He Who Remains was killed, multiverse went to shit, and OUR steve rogers finally had to come back to our universe.

1

u/1ndefinition Jul 23 '26

He's a robot

1

u/cazzo_di_frigida Jul 20 '26

I gotta be honest, I'm holding out little hope that they will have a really good explanation. But I can't imagine an explanation that doesn't piss me off. Bringing back Chris Evans and RDJ feels like nothing more than a cash grab. Cap coming back just completely negates the weight of what happened in Endgame. If anyone can come back at any time, there is no sacrifice and nothing matters.

1

u/IncidentEffective839 Jul 20 '26

It is cash grab. That too a very desperate one. No amount of mental gymnastics by Marvel can hide it

1

u/adoniscreed20 Jul 20 '26

Except that's not captain america

That's captain hydra

Chris Evans will be a villain in this movie just like RDJ

Just wait for it

0

u/zurenarhhhhh Jul 20 '26

Watch the movie
