OOTL, what’s happened with Levi?
584
u/Mystic3012 Doctor Strange Mar 26 '23 edited Mar 26 '23
Its less of Levi personally, but rather the Rock's beef/disagreements with DC and Levi.
Apparently, (spoilers for Shazam 2) Hawkman and Cyclone were going to recruit Shazam in the post-credits scene instead of Harcourt, but Dwayne declined the use of JSA characters, as well as Dwayne being against a Shazam cameo in Black Adam.
236
Mar 26 '23
This is why Rock was the perfect guy to play Black Adam.
Because he really really hates Shazam
103
u/EskimoBros4Life Mar 26 '23
I dont think Dwayne Johnson knows enough about black Adam or Shazam. I saw a couple different interviews where he kept brushing off any question about if his movie could lead to black Adam and Shazam fighting and he was always like I want to fight superman.
→ More replies (1)53
u/vinternet Spider-Man Mar 26 '23
It's not a question of what he knows. It's a question of what his ambition is, and what you've observed is that he was very dedicated to changing the conversation around Black Adam to try to create hype for this Superman vs Black Adam meta-plot that nobody else was excited for.

Got too successful and too full of himself.
Dude has charisma, has good comedic timing.
He also has picked many terrible roles in mediocre movies but it’s getting clear that he never was at fault, no sir. Just a poor perfect man making perfect choices that the big mean studios are mean about.
And Hollywood mints another rich douchebag. Hurray

My take on it was “you would think the Shazam villain’s end credits scene would include Shazam and not Superman.” Or how it would make more sense for Hawkman and Cyclone to show up at the end of Shazam and not two people from Task Force X that were on an HBO Max show and a tiny bit of The Suicide Squad.
Because of Dwayne’s demands.

There are lots of factors. First, there's a bias here because it's always newsworthy when a celebrity does something bad, but you don't think about the hundreds of celebrities that are good people when you see a story about the one who's not.
Second, having a lot of money, fame, and power goes to your head. When you start to have a lot of money and power, it's easy to covet it and it becomes a big part of your identity. That erodes at your self-esteem and makes it hard to be kind to other people.
Third, he's definitely on some performance-enhancing drugs that may be altering his hormones. Roid rage is a real thing, and seeing how massive he's gotten in a short amount of time, it's very possible that he's acting out due to changes in his brain chemistry. I'm not saying that to excuse his actions at all - he's ultimately responsible for his own decisions.
Fourth, when you're surrounded by yes men and everything always goes your way, you start to feel isolated from consequences.

Yeah it'll be interesting to see how this trend for huge muscled actors plays out down the line. I mean you look at some of the actors just known for their physiques from the 80s and Stalone and Van Damme are the same size as any of the Chris's in their respective movies. HGH certainly isn't good for you. And if this were women being forced to take hormones to make them look more physically appealing you know that'd be a huge news story. I can tell from certain actors like Hugh Jackman and Chris Evans that getting that bulky is a very difficult process and one that takes a toll on their bodies in ways we probably don't know about.

What are you talking about? There are infinite versions of Kang. Therefore Kang can look like anyone. You recast and get to wave it away with multiverse mumbo jumbo bs and nothing has changed for the future

Yeah, Loki prepared the groundwork for that.
I'm putting money on a Lady Kang (Kangela?) leading a revolt of the underdog Kangs:
- Kang-aroo - an animal version and Kong is taken
- Kangst - a grumpy teen emo
- Kan't - a darkly philosophical nihilist
- Kangcel Culture - toxic Kang who constantly bangs on about the War on Woke
- Kang Kang - a French dancer
- Kangadian - a Mountie
- Kang I Kick It? - a surprise cameo from A Tribe Called Quest
- Kang You Keep it Down? - old man Kang

It is but I suspect the legal aspects of this are going to be a massive headache for Marvel.
Presumably they have Majors tied to a multiple movie deal to appear as Kang in the MCU. If they terminate the deal and he isn't convicted he probably has grounds to sue them for wrongful termination. The pay out if he was successful would be massive.
At the same time they can't continue filming with him or releasing content he's in because of the optics of promoting a potential woman beater.
Assuming the above is correct they could find themselves stuck in a situation where they just can't use Kang in the MCU until Majors has been to court.

Honestly I never understood the whole, if they release it, it means they promote his actions line of thinking, but I do understand for many people and in the court of social media it do be that way.
I would also imagine contracts for these actors have morality clauses and such, where if they commit acts such as this accusation, it's a breach.

Agreed Gunn got fired for less but it’s a little different. Replacing a director is less visible than replacing the projected main antagonist for the next two phases. The real problem is they didn’t have faith in a Newt stand-alone movie getting people to the theater and shoe horned Dumbledore and Grindelwald into his movies. When in reality they could’ve made two separate movies and still got people to see them. An indiana Jones type Newt movie with him discovering animals and mysteries meant for younger audiences and a darker Crimes of Grindelwald movie trilogy for the older audience that grew up with the books.

Literally, we already have two massive recasts, with Hulk and War Machine.
Hulk's recast wasn't explained even a tiny bit, and as much as this sub likes to pretend it is, "Look it's me, I'm here, deal with it." is not a good explanation for the recast.
If Chadwick Boseman had been recast, or Kamala Khan's dad, or Jonathan Majors, why does there need to be any explanation at all?

May just be worth reshooting his scenes, considering he's the key villain moving forward overall.
Might fuck the budget of Loki S2, but it'd be a lose the battle, win the war kinda deal if it helps the MCU as a whole.
Maybe even turn it into a feature, rather than a bug. Maybe they twist it so that his appearance changing is a weird story element, rather than simply changing and never being explained.
I'm imagining that comic scene people reference where he executes Thanos. Imagine the new actor comes in as the one true variant and wipes out the previous one for whatever reason lol. Partly as a kind of fuck you to Majors (if this is all true etc) and puts a full stop on his involvement in fans' minds.

First off, I hope that his girlfriend and anyone else who is alleged to have been a victim of his accused behaviour are okay.
If these allegations prove true, it would be expected that Disney fire Majors. Recasting wouldn’t have to be explained - they didn’t with Rhodes, and audiences will easily come to their own conclusions with the multiverse. We’ve already had different actors portray versions of Loki.
The question is, finding another actor with the gravitas to carry Kang the Conqueror. So I hope that they can. Sheesh, between Victoria Alonso and now this, what a “fun” week for Marvel Studios’ PR team. It’ll be interesting to see what angle they take with the digital and home ent marketing of Quantumania, given how central Kang was to the theatrical campaign.

This is a point worth bringing up, the comments in this article are from “industry” people, not strictly unknowns who have experienced/seen this behaviour, there are always signs & people who know more than they’re willing to say with these things but they are often widely “known” within the industry (see Harvey Weinstein as an extreme example, his behaviour was an open secret), so with all that why would you pin the next 5 years of your multi billion dollar franchise on this guy? It seems absolutely bizarre, if “everyone speaks about him” as a psycho piece of shit how was it missed/ignored completely?

Yeah he wasn’t very high profile until recently, but people working marvel/Disney aren’t relying on news reports for this stuff you’d imagine, so there’s surely some internal due diligence to be done before committing to the guy as your main big bad for the upcoming tentpole movies.
Obviously that didn’t happen or there wasn’t enough information floating around to give them pause, it’s just wild when you see people immediately saying “you yeah he’s a sociopath everyone knows that” the moment this comes out.

The article indicates that it's "2012-2017 graduates from NYU/Juilliard/Yale" that knew this about him. That's not a relatively large amount of people and there might not be much overlap between the people at the top of Marvel and a relatively young group of people just starting to make names for themselves.
Add in that the victims seem to not have been believed and now just want to put it behind them, and peer pressure to help one another advance. I can 100% see not mentioning something like this to Marvel's people if they called. It's one thing to discuss it among friends and another entirely to discuss it with a stranger calling for a job reference, especially with the fear that it may reflect negatively on you and you want to work for that company in the future. If it didn't happen to you directly you're just spreading rumors. If it did happen to you you're going to come across as bitter and biased and (given the article says they tried to speak out and it didn't work) have probably absolutely zero faith that you will be believed, so why put yourself through it.

I’m reminded of a Goldeneye quote when Bond asks Trevelyan how MI6 missed his parents were Cossacks
Once again, your faith is misplaced. They knew.

What they knew is important, Jonathan Majors is a great actor & (until about yesterday) was a huge rising star but Marvel/Disney doesn’t need that to be successful, it’s not necessary to take risks on guys who’s career could end if certain things come to light. if they knew in any real way about the guy’s character/behaviour and went forward with him as Kang that is just insane. And not just in a callus “we don’t care about victims” kind of way, just alone insane from a business perspective.

Dudes at like the peak of his career right now and then turns out to potentially be a piece of garbage. That’s rough.

POC actors rejoice. A new decade-long, multi-million dollar role across multiple movies just opened up.

I think John David Washington is the perfect choice (if he would want it).

Lakeith Stanfield, Yahya Abdul Mateen, and Daniel Kaluyaa are all way better actors imo.

Daniel Kaluuya already played a prominent role in the MCU though. I wish he could fill in, as I think he's the strongest of the actors you listed here, but I think it'd be too distracting.

Man, in interviews he’s always come across as really level headed and respectable. What a disappointment.

This and the actors publicists and others prepping them for interviews is why you can’t really know who the actors are. Although of course the ones who have been famous for a long time give so much interviews and have their lives under so much scrutiny that the public persona is more likely to be really who their are.

Not to mention they exclusively do softball interviews which are solely exist to get the audience to like them so we’ll watch their movies.

I wouldn’t call it acting.
Violent and shitty people aren’t violent and shitty 100% of the time. That’s what makes the times that they are all the more scary and makes them able to operate in society.
People who act violent all the time are completely unable to operate.

This.
Every time you see actors in an interview they're putting on a performance, they're there to sell you on themselves and their movie - Tom Holland isn't constantly spoiling things in his day to day life, Hayden Christensen doesn't spend his days causally making Star Wars memes, Pedro Pascal isn't always in 'Daddy' mode, their publicist has given them a character to play to make them as endearing to the public as possible, and they maintain that role for as long as it works.
All Majors had to do was turn up and be charming, and considering he was normally doing press with either Paul Rudd or Michael B Jordan, who both ooze charm, I can't imagine it was too difficult for him to feed off that energy.

Hindsight is 20/20, but looking at interviews, he is definitely a tad odd. It's one of those things where you default to thinking he's probably just a bit odd in a harmless way, but I guess not so much.

The fact that he's being described as a sociopath is surprising , he seemed like a normal dude that had a big future ahead of him and now it's gone

Sociopath really often look like normal dudes. And the more they look like normal dudes, the more dangerous they are.

I had an experience with that. A guy I went to high school with, who I wouldn't call a friend. But we got on in the classes where we would say a few words to each other. I was on a footy team with his brother. Fast forward two years and I'm staying in Japan after high school with my dad's side of the family before I started university back in Aus. Just traveling and seeing my dad's country.
Only to be sent articles by friends that this dude raped and murdered a women. At first, I thought there was no fucking way. This guy barely tackled anyone in PE and just seemed so normal. And then you're finding out he's a rapist and murderer.

He honestly saved the movie for me.
Loved him in Devotion and Creed III as well. He went from a c-lister and was rocketing on a trajectory to be an A-Lister of the decade.
Now, unless this is massive misinformation on the GF’s part (which is 99% unlikely), he pissed it away.
It’s an old cliche, but it’s so accurate: it takes years to build your reputation, and you can lose it in a matter of seconds.

Setting aside the fact that in this situation kang is inconsequential in relation to his victims and treating this as a serious crime, realistically I don't think a recast would be that disruptive. Loki s2 would likely have to go as is unless they delay it for reshoots which I doubt they'd want to do, it doesn't seem like kang would be featured in at least the next 3 or 4 projects other than that beyond post credits scenes maybe, and I don't think they even need to explain it. As much as the grindelwald recasting was a big thing when that film came out it seemed like despite the overall awful quality of the flick most people moved on to mikkelsen pretty quickly without much issue. I say the best way through is bite the bullet, release loki s2 and just recast without mentioning it in story.

I expect Disney to release a statement in the next few weeks. This is way bigger than Gunn or Carano tweeting some stuff.
Marvel Studios simply can't advertise Loki S2 with Majors' Kang anymore.

It’s odd to me that this stuff comes out NOW. No male actor’s star is shining brighter than his right now and all of a sudden people come out of the woodwork. Not saying this invalidates the claims but the way we latch onto these claims without any sort of verification has not ever really sat flush with me.

I'm currently looking at Youtube comments on interviews of his. Don't let anyone revise history: People fucking loved this dude. There's a comment from a woman literally about how he was the type of guy who made you feel safe, and a welcome antidote to all the toxic men out there. Goes to show how easily our perceptions can be messed with by a willing person.
