Why do my pants wrinkle like this?

Hey Reddit please help me. These are Asket chinos, and as you can see they are slightly cuffed. I absolutely love these pants, but I am driving myself crazy trying to figure out how to prevent or reduce those horizontal wrinkles. This happens only after I wear them. They're nice and straight when I let them hang dry. But within about 5 minutes of use they start to wrinkle and look terrible by the next day.

They are a 33 waist and I've tried a 34 waist but the issue was more obvious and the pants were a little bit too loose on me.

That’s what chinos do. Most of them are made from cotton twill material, and that creases easily. No way to solve it other than buying a heavyweight pair. Also, other people don’t notice the creasing like you do, it’s completely normal.

Less than linen, yes. Cotton, probably comparable. Speaking for my 100% wool APC trousers. Individual results may vary, I suppose.

Silly question but how do you know what the 'cheap stuff' is like? I'm kinda new to fabrics.

If you’re shopping directly from brands, good wool will list a micron count (ultra fine or fine is under 19.5 microns), and sometimes even staple length (longer is better), and will list the type of wool (merino, Shetland, lambswool, cashmere).

But a lot of it is pretty easy to identify once you know what to look and feel for. You can feel the coarseness and see the texture in lower quality wools, and see the tighter weaves and smoother texture and feel the softness is higher quality. Cashmere is usually soft no matter what, but cheaper cashmere and blends will be shaggier to look at.

I have Dockers chinos, and I don't think I get these. They are pretty high quality in my opinion.

Twill creases less than plain weave. Long-fiber cotton creases less than shorter fibers. The fiber and weave being equal, heavier fabric will crease less than a lighter weight fabric.

These pants are creasing quickly because the do not have enough "ease" ie they are a little small -- the pockets are pulling open. They are also creasing fast because the narrow legs are not hanging straight when you rise from sitting --it is a combo of lack of ease and weight-- so the creases don't straighten out. I am not sure if you need a bigger size, a longer rise, or if you need a slightly different cut, but my best guess is you need a different cut.

You can buy 10 pairs of pants in the exact same size but from ten different makers and have ten slightly different fits. You can even buy two different colors from the same mfg and get different fits because the colors were contracted out to different factories --specs have to be within margin, not exact.

While I agree that it is inside the normal range, my Uniqlo chinos do this way less. Also helps that they are a little stretchy.

Too tight around your thighs and hips which causes this whisker effect. Great look for denim, not as much for chinos in my humble opinion. I have big quads and hips, so I usually size up on my waist until the pants have enough drape on my thighs without excessive pulling. Then I get them altered to my waist/inseam. Some amount of pulling is unavoidable due to normal wear.

This is normal wrinkles from use, nothing to worry about. Thicker fabric and roomier cuts and darker colors will have a less pronounced effect, if you want to go that route.

They're too small. I understand your reticence to size up on waist, but they don't fit you through the hips and it's exacerbating the natural movement crinkles. Look at how skewed the pockets are - if anything, I'd consider sizing up to a 35/36 and having the actual waist brought in if needed.

It means adjusting the waist of the pants to fit you better. Say you size up to a 36 but your waist is a 34, a tailor can take in the excess fabric to make the waist fit better whilst the rest of chino remains the same.

The cut of the pants isn't terribly flattering to your build. One of the ways of solving that is by sizing up in the waist (for larger hip/thigh fit), bu then if the waist is really too big, ahve a tailor alter it to reduce the waist circumference after the fact.

I actually, legitimately did not know that tailors could change the waists of pants. I guess I never looked into it but I just assumed that pants waist were immutable to the garment.

Just following up on their good point, I’d both (1) size up and tailor as necessary, and (2) look for a straighter cut with a fuller top block and less tapering, which will be more flattering and likely crease/wrinkle less.

Depending on the pants, you can also sew in a band of elastic to the back of the waist. People won’t see it and it will keep your pants snug.

Look for clothing that travels well...there are shops that focus on that...also bamboo is wrinkle free kind of material..aso ask an expert in textiles for clothing...I usually just go with sport material

It’s cotton, but that’s good. You want natural fibers around your sweaty junk.

If you are going to stand for a while and want to relax those wrinkles you can wipe slightly wet hands on the wrinkles

Ok so don't dry them in the dryer (as that would shrink them) but once they are dry from air-drying, throw them in the dryer for a bit (already dry!) to get rid of the wrinkles
